40% SoluionI you put the ederal government in charge o the Sahara Desertin 5 years thered be a shortage o sand.- Milton Friedman. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax reund, which lasts unti

you realize it was your money to start with.- Unknown Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesnt mean

politics wont take an interest in you.- PericlesWith a ederal election at hand, it is sad to realize that

approximately 40% o eligible voters will not exercise theirdemocratic responsibilities. Tere are indeed many reasons tobe cynical about politics, but not voting isnt part o the solutionJust about everyone I know has an opinion and ideas as to whatthey would like rom their government, but eel powerless aboucreating any real change. Do you know why you are powerless??

Federal parties have very sophisticated means o identiyingwhat issues are important to people. Tey are also very advanced

in identiying who votes and who doesnt. I 80% o seniors voteand only 20% o young people exercise their right to vote guess who the parties will pay attention to!! I you vote, you wilget noticed!!

A majority government can be elected in Canada with about40% support o actual voters, which is only 24% o all eligible

voters. Te 40% o Canadians who do not vote have the poweto elect any party that they might want, including the MikieParty!! It is unortunate that we do not have a write in ballotbecause Te Jet would denitely get my vote.I know how many people eel when aced with the unortunate

situation where there is not one o the parties that you reallywant to support. Or you are aced with the reality that your voteis going to be wasted because the candidate rankly doesnt have

a hope in winning. But, do you know that each party currentlyreceives $2 or every vote that they collect?? So sometimes, I

just have to eel good about the act that I at least have providedsome support or the losing side.

With millions o people around the world struggling and evendying to win the right to chose their government, it is an insultto their hopes and aspirations, that we ail to exercise the rightto vote. Get o youre butts and vote.

Tis has been an unpaid message rom Te Jet. More kibble inevery dish ... Vote now!! 800

pRoGReSSWe had a beautiul warm sunny spring day recently when Ihappened to be at home. I was naturally inspired to change thebed - what else would you do with a gorgeous spring day?!!!My esteemed husband does not ollow this logic o course, butthat is likely because all those summers collecting garbage asa university student completely desensitized his nose. In mybooks, there is absolutely nothing that smells as heavenly as abed reshly made up with bedding that has just come o theclothesline. And the rst time I can do that aer the long wintero using the dryer is especially heavenly.I vividly remember as a kid the laundry spending hours on the

clothesline on winter days and coming in sti as a board, rozensolid and still wet (or at least quite damp) at the end o the day.In act, we did not have a modern washer at all, but one o the

wringer washers where you ran the clothes through the wringer

mechanism to remove the water (watch your ngers!) into arinse water and then back through the same wringer beorehanging them out to dry. My grandmother would have used awashboard, no electric washer or dryer. Tree generations havemade doing laundry and much dierent proposition.

Tis is one tiny piece o our changing world. Fiy years agothe rst man entered space. Fiy years rom now what will ourchildren and grandchildren be doing? And yet . . . I still preerthe smell o the laundry coming in o the clothesline, and soI do the extra work to be able to have that olactory pleasureAnd burn more calories. And save a tiny little piece o theenvironment.

In the January 1998 issue o IW (International Watch)magazine, the editors said, o span the last 50,000 years ohuman existence, and assuming the typical lie span during thatime was 65 years, would require the lie spans o nearly 770people. O those 770 people, 600 would have spent their lives incaves or something less. Only the last 68 had any eective meano communicating with each other. Only the last 6 ever saw aprinted word. Only the last 4 could measure time with precisionOnly the last two used electric motors. Almost everything thatmakes up our material world today has been developed duringthe lie span o the 770th person.
