Thus, today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus rose from the dead on “the first day of the week” (John 20:1). Within about a hundred years of Jesus’ resurrection Christians were celebrating the great Easter Vigil, beginning after dark on Holy Saturday and continuing until dawn on Easter morning. During this vigil, Christians heard salvation history through scripture readings, celebrated the resurrection of Jesus, and looked forward to his return. At the vigil men and women who had gone through three years of instruction were baptized and received First Communion. Without his death and rising to new life Jesus would have been merely another Jewish teacher and failed messiah. His teachings would be just a code of ethics and our worship in vain. We celebrate the Resurrection for fifty days, and for the rest of the year every Sunday is a kind of “mini-Easter.” Easter is the culmination of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection that we celebrate “with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:8). E aster is a big deal—a very big deal. Every one of the

April 24, 2011 Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord 3

From our Pastor, Fr. Jack Sewell

T here are many celebrations in our lives—births, weddings, anniversaries, and graduations among them. Each of them has their own rituals, from in-fant gifts to first dance at a wedding to anniversary gem momentos to moving the graduation tassel

from one side to the other. These rituals help us to connect with family customs as well as tie in with our culture and society. They become a link to those who have supported us and prayed for us in so many ways throughout our lives. Easter is the celebration of our redemption—Christ is Risen! This feast is marked by numerous ritu-als that remind us of the salvation that comes to us through the dying and rising of Jesus. Last evening at the Easter Vigil we welcomed five new members into our Catholic community of faith. We blessed the Easter Candle—the Light of Christ that will be a part of our liturgies throughout the Easter Season, and then for all of our baptisms and funer-als. This weekend we renew our baptismal promises and are sprinkled with holy water, reminding us of our own dying and rising to new life in Christ. We are joined together in our profession of faith. We are united with all those who have gone before us and with those who will succeed us. All are one in Christ Jesus. These outward rituals and symbols tell us of the true mystery that we experience at Easter. We are reborn as children of our Father, and as brothers and sisters to Christ. The true celebration of Easter is reflected in our lives. Living in the sincerity and truth of Christ, and fulfilling the Father’s will for us as Christ did, brings us closer to the perfect love of Christ. As we enter into this holy season of rejoicing and gladness, may we proclaim the eternal mystery of our faith—Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!

“Let us celebrate the feast with the

unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” (1 Corinthians 5:8)

Sun Shines—Construction Moves Forward! The sometimes exhausting work of remediating the soil and placing utility lines in the front of our property continues with the good weather. The new gas and fire lines have been installed and approved. The accompany-ing pictures show the progress being made above ground. The mock wall located at the bottom of the Presidio drive is a miniature section of the hall. It is built to verify the construction and appearance of the final pro-ject. Twenty-three steel beams form the foundation of the retaining wall which will support the weight of the hall on the canyon side of the prop-erty. The new service driveway has been graded and it will allow conven-ient access for deliveries and pickup behind the hall. The two framing walls in the middle of our hall footprint will form the interior pillars that will hold the collapsible room dividers. These dividers will allow the most flexible use of our new space. Let us continue to pray for the safety of all who are working on our project, and for our ongoing support in prayer and in accommodation as our vision comes to life! “May the gracious care of the Lord our God be ours, and prosper the work of our hands for us.” (Psalm 90:17)

OLF School welcomes new Principal I am very pleased to announce that Beate Nguyen has accepted our invitation to be the principal of OLF Parish School! Beate visited our school during the interview process and had the opportunity to meet with Julie Tipton and a number of our faculty and staff. Beate was deeply impressed with the spirit and energy of our school community. The search committee and I were deeply impressed with Beate’s commitment to Catholic education and values. She comes to us with a worldwide experience: Beate was born in Germany, raised in Belgium, and has 16 years of global profes-sional educational experience. She was Vice Principal of a Catholic elementary school in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, and currently is Principal for the American International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She received her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education with technology

integration and social justice emphasis from Loyola Marymount Catholic University in Los Angeles. Beate will be start-ing here on July 1st. I thank the search committee for their wisdom and insight during this process. Let us pray in grati-tude to God for his providence for our OLF Parish School.

Dear Our Lady of Fatima Parishioners, The last 6 months have been quite an undertaking for our parish school auction co-chairs (Claudine Schulte & Eileen DaCunha), parents, friends, and families. April 2nd was a spectacular celebration. We cele-brated our school, our faculty and staff, our parish family and friends and most importantly our children. While exact figures are not in just yet, we know that the evening was a success because of the many people who assisted us in bringing the night to fruition. To the many parish donors, volunteers and sponsors who made this event a tremendous one - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It was so wonderful to see so many parishioners in attendance this year and we greatly appreciate your generosity. God Bless each of you, and thank you for everything!

Sincerely, The Our Lady of Fatima Parish School Community

y la verdad” (I Cor 5,8)
