Dear friends in Christ, Our sense of smell is the most memory invoking sense we have. A whiff of a familiar scent can transport us back to our childhood or a particular place or event. Scents can be tied in to holidays as well, and Easter has its’ own unique scents.

The smell of damp, newly warmed earth, a baked ham cooking in an oven, and vinegar and hard boiled eggs conjure up Easter at home for me. On the other hand Easter lilies and lit candles transport me to the Church Sanctuary. I am sure that you have your own “Easter scent” memories as well!

The women who went to the tomb that first Easter morning were expecting the odor of death, a smell that that was more familiar but no less repugnant, to them than it is to us today. They were laden with ointments and spices to ward off the smell, perfumes they would not have to use. I wonder what smell they then would associate with their experience of Easter – the damp earth of springtime, the flowers blooming on their walk to the tomb, the lingering scent of unneeded spices. I wonder what an empty tomb smells like, an empty tomb where the miracle of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ took place. Per-haps it smelled like heaven, or perhaps it smelled of earth. Regardless it smelled of spring and new life.

May that new life and hope of Easter invade your senses this spring!

In Christ,

Pastor Mary Anne

Send me your jokes (church-appropriate) to be used for our

Holy Humor Sunday, April 23rd. Come and experience the

mirth of Easter; the devil has been defeated and love and joy

win!

Seder Meal

You are cordially invited to a Seder Meal on Tuesday, April 11th at 6:15

pm. The Seder Meal is the meal the Jewish People eat to celebrate

and remember the Passover in the Book of Exodus. This will be a tradi-

tional Seder Meal with Christian elements. Pastor Mary Anne will be

your host. A sign-up sheet will be located in the west narthex or call the

church office to reserve. All are encouraged to attend, as this is a special

event for Holy Week.

If you have never experienced a Seder Meal, please come and bring your

friends and neighbors! If you came last year, please come again! Dinner

will be served and a space will be reserved for you with a place card ! This

event is for all ages!

On Sunday April 23rd we will be celebrating Holy Humor Sunday! You may ask what in the world is that? Well, the idea of setting aside one Sunday each year to celebrate God’s gift

of laughter and joy may be new to us, but it’s got a long and rich history in many con-

gregations around the world. Laughter Sunday (also known as Holy Humour Sunday, Hilarity Sunday, God’s

Laughter Sunday, Bright Sunday or Holy Fools Sunday) has its roots in a number of dif-

ferent Christian traditions. Churches in 15th century Bavaria used to celebrate the Sunday after Easter

as Risus Paschalis (‘God’s Joke,’ or ‘the Easter laugh’). Priests would deliberately in-

clude amusing stories and jokes in their sermons in an attempt to make the faithful

laugh. After the service, people would gather together to play practical jokes on one

another and tell funny stories. It was their way of celebrating the resurrection of Christ

– the supreme joke God played on Satan by raising Jesus from the dead. The observance of Risus Paschalis was officially outlawed by Pope Clement X in

the 17th century. Perhaps people were having too much fun.

In the Orthodox tradition, people would gather on Easter Monday to tell jokes and fun-

ny stories, and to dance and eat together.

In 1988, the Fellowship of Merry Christians began encouraging churches to resurrect

some of these Christian traditions—to celebrate the grace and mercy of God through the gift

of laughter and joy. More and more churches across the country are celebrating these tradi-

tions the Sunday after Easter.

So we will gather on the 23rd of April to celebrate the grace and mercy of

God through gifts of laughter and joy; through song, jokes, liturgy, and scripture. I am

looking for “church” jokes for that Sunday (appropriate ones please). You may email

me or give me handwritten ones. Please don’t tell them to me: I am notorious at for-

getting jokes! Let’s have some fun celebrating the JOY of Easter! Pastor Mary Anne
