Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship
and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and
Allah loves the doers of good. (Surah Al Imran, Verse 134)
From the Ahadith
Narrated Abu Huraira: Two persons, a Muslim and a Jew,
quarreled. The Muslim said, By Him Who gave Muhammad
superiority over all the people! The Jew said, By Him Who
gave Moses superiority over all the people! At that the Mus-
lim raised his hand and slapped the Jew on the face. The Jew
went to the Prophet and informed him of what had happened
between him and the Muslim. The Prophet sent for the Muslim
and asked him about it. The Muslim informed him of the event.
The Prophet said, Do not give me superiority over Moses,
for on the Day of Resurrection all the people will fall uncon-
scious and I will be one of them, but I will be the first to gain
consciousness, and will see Moses standing and holding the
side of the Throne (of Allah). I will not know whether (Moses)
has also fallen unconscious and got up before me, or Allah has
exempted him from that stroke.. (Sahih Bukhari 2411)

Breaking Boundaries
When you think of a professional
makeup artist or brand ambassador, what type of person do you envision? You almost
immediately picture a girl, a gorgeous one.
She might be the type of person that you
think is so far removed from the society we
partake in, especially our Muslim society. You
might dismiss this as something you could
never imagine yourself doing, because it just
doesn’t seem possible for a Muslim to access
that sphere. That is why when blogger Nura
Afia got an email from CoverGirl, one of the
leading cosmetics brands, asking her to star in
her own beauty campaign, she didn’t believe
it either. It was only after she completed the
photoshoot in L.A. for their new mascara line
that it all started sinking in; Nura was the first-
ever hijabi makeup ambassador.
CoverGirl is known for breaking down
boundaries. After having their first male
ambassador, they surprised us again
by including Nura as their first Muslim
ambassador. CoverGirl first noticed Nura
because of her YouTube channel, where
she posted beauty videos and gained quite
a following. Ever since then, Nura says the
CoverGirl campaign seemed so surreal. “It
happened so fast. I had to pinch myself a
couple times,” she recalls. Before this time,
Unity Anam Ahmed
Adeen Izzatullah
even seeing a hijabi in a commercial was
extremely rare, and not to mention hard to
imagine. Nura realizes and appreciates this. “I’m
so honored to be that person to first do it,” she
says. “There really aren’t words to describe the
feeling.”
Nura Afia says that because she has always
been insecure about wearing the hijab, she is
amazed that women like her are finally being
given a chance to express themselves. She
loves that the brand is one of the few willing to
celebrate diversity, and how they are working
to expand what it means to be truly beautiful.
When asked about how it feels being a very
visible Muslim in a challenged political climate,
she says that she has not been the target of
much hate. In fact, more and more people tend
to smile at her ever since the election. Even
though she has not received hate mail, she
understands and sympathizes with people who
misunderstand Muslims. “You just never know
what experience they went through to get to that
point,” she says. “In my religion, we are taught
to give people 70 excuses. I think that needs to
be practiced a bit more.” Even though Nura and
her husband are no longer afraid of the changing
political climate, she adds that as Muslims, we
should educate people and show the world a
different side of us, a side that is not portrayed in
newspapers and media.
ith April in full swing, and Ramadan a
mere two months away, I think it’s important that
we take the time to shed some light on some
of the issues our society is facing today, as
unfortunately, our community has the tendency
to pretend that certain issues don’t exist in
hopes that they’ll disappear. From homophobia,
to racism, to the stigma around drug/alcohol
abuse and mental health, to the blatant
*The opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily represent IAGD editorial board or other positions or policies.
misogyny that has somehow worked itself into
the fabric of our ummah, we need to identify
these issues and admit that these issues are
prevalent, and then work together to dispel
some of these concerns. Unfortunately, without
working through these issues, the future of this
community remains in jeopardy.
We live in a society that requires us to band
together. Unity is, and will continue to be our
strongest asset when it comes to holding our
own in the midst of the current presidential
administration. At this point in time, all minority
groups are being attacked, and a transgression
on one group’s rights, means a transgression
on every group’s rights. Starting internally, we
need to work together as Muslims to become
socially and politically aware of the state of
affairs of this country. Only then will we be able
to mobilize efforts and make a difference in the
way things are running. And when I say
Muslims, I mean Muslims as a whole not
divided by sect or race. We have
a duty to each other to reach out to different
races and different sects of Muslims, and to let
it be known that this masjid, and every masjid
is a safe place--that everyone is welcome
here, regardless of sect, race, and level of
religiosity, and of socio-economic status.
When it comes to social issues that many
people may face in their day to day life, the
fact that the masjid is the last place they may
come to in order to seek help for fear of being
judged is a serious issue. The fact that we
have such a lack of diversity in attendance
is a serious issue. The fact that some people
have decided that the masjid is not a place for
them because they didn’t feel included when
they were here is a serious issue. We need
to work beyond the mentality that masajid are
only for the religious, and we need to work
past alienating those who are made to feel as
if they do not belong because of some of their
activities. We need to talk about religious,
sexual or nationality issues that face the
community every day without prejudging
anyone.
There are Muslims who have a history with
drugs and alcohol that need help without being
degraded. And there are Muslims that need
help with knowing where to start in getting
closer to Allah (swt) without fear of bring
prejudged in asking seemingly simple
questions. And this masjid, as a whole, needs
to step up. This
doesn’t mean we have to take it upon ourselves
to condemn things and send out reminders that
certain things are haram. People are aware of
what is haram and what isn’t haram--what they
aren’t aware of is the fact that the masjid can be
a great support network to help you get to the
level of religiosity you want to achieve. It means
we need to reflect on the countless sins we
commit on a daily basis, both consciously and
unconsciously, and give people the benefit of
the doubt when they set foot in the masjid. It
means we need to stop criticizing and tearing
each other down, and it means we need to work
together as a whole so that we can achieve
getting closer to Allah (swt).
These are not issues that plague our
community alone, or issues that one person
can fix-- they are issues that each and every
one of us needs to take upon ourselves. And
no, it doesn’t need to be drastic, but little things
like branching outside of the little cliques that
seem to form, and saying salaam to someone
who seems unfamiliar, make a world of
difference to someone who is visiting the masjid
for the first time.
Given the rise of anti-Semitism and
Islamophobia, we can start by building interfaith
coalitions. Get involved with our local Interfaith
Leadership Council of Metro-Detroit, Michigan
Roundtable, or participate in a local women’s
interfaith group such as WISDOM. We can also
offer support to groups who are marginalized,
and are often targets of bigotry, like the Jewish
community or the LGBT community, as well as
stand up for prisoner, immigrant and refugee
rights. We should not only visit our brothers
and sisters in the African American Muslim
community, but also seek to acknowledge and
understand the painful history of institutionalized
racism in our nation which gave birth to
movements like Black Lives Matter. We need to
take hate crimes and social attacks personally,
regardless of the target, as stripping one
group’s rights strips us all of our rights. Change
is needed, and it is needed now, so let’s try to
make a conscious effort next time we come to
the masjid, so we can continue to make the
world better around us.
