April 2016 Peace Church Hosts Cultural Music Event Peace Church Philippines hosted a great community event on our front lawn this month. Neighbours were invited to join local musicians in playing native instruments. The children and even adults all had a chance to learn some rhythms and beats with handmade bamboo cultural instruments. After the interactive music event, Peace Church had a worship time outside and a dinner and Bible study at our house. It was great to get to know more neighbours and welcome them to our Peace Church community. This event also coincided with Makai’s 4 th birthday, so we celebrated him with two things he treasures- music and friends! We will be hosting monthly events like this, where we hope to gather new friends from our neighbourhood for fun, fellowship and worship. Please pray for the growth of Peace Church- that more families will join us for these community events and worship time. Our Filipino Sister, Kriz Cruzado, Accepted at Canadian Mennonite University We are so thrilled that our dear sister, Kriz, has been accepted into CMU’s Master of Arts in Peacebuilding and Collbarotive Development. We have known Kriz since 2008 when we worked with her at Peacebuilders Community (PBCI) in Davao and she has been family to us since then. Kriz has worked with PBCI (also a ministry of Mennonite Church Canada) for nearly 9 years where she taught peace and reconciliation training, served in disaster-hit areas and trained local leaders in the process of peace, relief and development. She is excited and honoured to be able to study at a Mennonite University in a program that will hugely improve on her skills and credentials to serve and lead in the Philippines. This is actually the same program Darnell is enrolled in (he’ll do two weeks of summer classes in Winnipeg again this coming June). PeaceChurchProducesDocumentaryonInterfaithDialogueinthePhilippines On February 18 and 19, Peace Church, in partnershipwith the Philippine Council ofEvangelical Churches (PCEC), presented the first ever documentary at the annual AsianTheological Seminary Theological Forum, Manila’s largest Theological forum. Since its firstforum in2005,noothermediumbesideswrittenpapershavebeenpresented, sowhenourout-of-the-boxideawasaccepted,PeaceChurchwasthrilledtoproduceafilm.PeaceChurchmembers, Kathleen and Fread, flew toMindanao to film interviews with Muslimleaders who participated in an interfaithdialogueOctober2015,organizedbyPCEC(Iwrote about this event that Darnellattended in our last newsletter). They alsofilmed an interviewwith the CEO of PCEC,NoelPantoja.
The video shares the importanceofMuslimsandChristiansunderstandingeachother and working together in the Filipinocontext. The documentary gave a rareopportunityforMuslimleadersinthesouthto express themselves to Christian leadersin Manila and emphasizes the need formutualunderstandingandfriendship.
WeareproudofPeaceChurchforproducingthisfilm,especiallyKathandFreadwhotravelledtoMindanaoaftermanylogisticaldelaysandthankfullymanagedtoleavethevolatileareaofMindanaoonlyhoursbeforeskirmishesbetweentheArmedForcesofthePhilippinesand the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters erupted.
