President
President’s Message - David Schlactus, DMD Dear fellow fraters, now that we have
made it through the holidays, and
hopefully everyone has a fresh list of
New Year's resolutions as we have
reflected back on what we have done
well and what we have done poorly in
our lives, I want everyone to reflect
on what AO means to them. Is it
simply a study club? Is it simply a
place to socialize with colleagues? Is
it an organization where we get to ful-
fill certain philanthropic needs? Is it
an organization that represents a lot of
who we are as individuals? I hope it is
all or many of these and perhaps even
much more. I also hope that each of
us recognizes how unique our particu-
lar chapter is. We have had and have,
so many members who have not only
helped define what our chapter is lo-
cally but have been so instrumental in
shaping AO internationally. These in-
dividuals have and many still are serv-
ing in many capacities on the interna-
tional board and on committees. We
tend to take this for granted. None
however, have come to define AO
more than Ben Williamowsky. I men-
tion Ben alone, because we have a
unique opportunity coming to us this
December. We have convention right
here in our own back yard. A wonder-
ful event and opportunity to experi-
ence all that AO is. To fraternize with
fellow Alpha Omegans from all over
the world, to touch and moved by com-
mon experiences, to gain more CE
credits, for younger members to gain
leadership skills and so much more.
You can attend it all or just parts.
However, what we ALL need to do is
at least attend the Welcome Din-
ner Thursday December 24th from 6
-10 because the entire organization will
be honoring our very own, and one and
only, Ben Williamowsky. What he has
done for our chapter and our beloved
AO organization as a whole can not be
quantified. As a chapter we need to
come and show our love and support
for Ben. I know this is vacation time
with our families but just as Ben and
all those other individuals in our chap-
ter who have given up so much to
help AO flourish and remain viable, so
too can we sacrifice a little of our vaca-
tion to show our appreciation for all
that Ben has done. So as we again re-
flect on what AO means to us individu-
ally, please attend convention and even
help out as our chapter hosts the event,
and if nothing else, please plan on at-
tending the opening night Wel-
come Dinner so we may show all of
AO how much Ben means not only
across all of AO, but right here at
home too.

WASHINGTON ALUMNI CHAPTER OF ALPHA OMEGA
“THANK-YOU” RECEPTION AT WOODMONT C.C.
Thanks to the generosity of local philanthropist, IRMA PORETSKY, a reception was
held to thank the panel members for their commitment for the past 3 years of care for
the many Holocaust survivors living in the Greater Washington area. Over that period
of time, under the direction of ELLEN BLALOCK, Holocaust Program Director for
JSSA, ‘our’ program has treated 220 survivors certified by JSSA as living under an
economic poverty line. The program is part of a North America commitment by Alpha
Omega Chapters supported by “Henry Schein Cares” that has seen programs by other
AO chapters similar to the one that was formed and operated successfully by our local
chapter members and those from the Maimonides Society. Washington will continue to
promote and conduct its present program differing only in its goal to treat ALL of the
400+ Holocaust Survivors eligible for our care. Of course the heroes of our program
are the many dentists who have given of their time and expert care to see this venture
reach the heights that is has. The big “THANK YOU” was certainly well-deserved.
RECENT DECISION BY INTERNATIONAL CLAIMS CONFERENCE
TO EXPAND ITS CARE FOR SURVIVORS IN OUR AREA CALLS
While not all of our wonderful panel members were able to attend, a ‘plus’ factor was
the attendance of a number of newly recruited dentists. Those volunteers who attended
as well as those who have offered their help are: Brendon Berman, Mark Wallace, Jan
Grossman, Ken Ingber, Farah Assadipour, Cary Klimen, Ron Levine, Ivan Stangel,
Mark Mouallem, Michael Blicher, Inna Kost, and Mary Ziomek. We will still continue
to recruit and ask that our present members continue to do the same. Additionally, the
program is reaching out to dentists who have from its beginning agreed to treat
patients although they may have been considered to be a bit outside of the Greater
Washington sphere. Hopefully we will be able to transport our patients who live in
outlying MD suburbs (Gaithersburg, Germantown, e.g.) to volunteers Adam Frieder
and Jeff Cross (not unlike on going transportation to Northern Virginia suburbs).

2015 Alpha Omega Externship Program
In the chaos of the transition between third and forth year, I was chosen to par-
ticipate in the 2015 Alpha Omega Externship Program. I ranked Washington, DC as
my top city because although I am not from this area, I have visited often and I hope to
one day live and practice here. I have done many hours of shadowing in dental offices
since high school. What made this particular week-long experience outstanding was
the relationships I built with these dentists. My experiences observing in high school
and undergrad were just that: observation. I watched procedures but never really un-
derstood them. I asked questions why this was done, or why that was used, but my in-
teraction with those dentists never progressed further than that. The relationships that I
was able to build from this experience will be invaluable. These dentists gave me so
more insight and advice on owning and running practices, having associates, market-
ing your practice, and managing staff than can ever be covered in any dental school
course.
On my first day, I visited Dr. David Schlactus in his general practice in Rock-
ville, MD. I was greeted by friendly staff and surrounded by a beautiful office. I was
introduced to Dr. Schlactus as he was part way through a simple restoration. He en-
couraged me to assist him, as I have done many
times in other offices. However, our conversation
wasn’t focused on the technique of removing car-
ies, creating a prep form, or bonding as other den-
tists have lectured me on. Dr. Schlactus began the
conversation with the community of AO alumni in
the area. He discussed the community of his pa-
tients, and his place as more than just a dentist but
instead a friend to families who have been patients
of his for over a decade. During the rest of the day
he shared with me some of his advice and opinions
on associateships and how he settled in Maryland.
These are important things, and things most dentists don’t discuss with their shadows.
On Tuesday I navigated my way on the DC metro to one of the
most impressive practices I have ever seen. I was welcomed by
Dr. Fredric Simon, Dr. Kim Menhinick, and Dr. Scott Hetz of
Advanced Endodontic Associates. I’ve known that ideally I
want to join a group practice, especially if I become a specialist.
After shadowing at this office, I hold this as an example of what
I will strive to achieve. The endodontists all worked smoothly
together, the office was gorgeously built, and the technology
that was used was top notch. All of the endodontists were help-
ful and encouraging, with advice on becoming an endodontist
and different programs. And I have to say, I have never seen a
smaller, more conservative, more perfect root canal access
than that done by Dr. Simon.

2015 Alpha Omega Externship Program, continued
After getting lost on the metro, I was able to make my
way to Dr. Thomas Sokoly’s general practice downtown
for Wednesday morning. I walked into another stunning
and newly-renovated office. Dr. Sokoly’s personality
was bubbly and infectious. He gave great advice on in-
heriting a practice, the importance of investments into
the practice, and the importance of a good office manag-
er. The procedure I found most interesting was a new
system of orthodontics called MTM Clear Aligner. Hav-
ing endured 3 brutal years of braces, I know I wouldn’t
have been a candidate for MTM, but there are many pa-
tients who need minor adjustments who do not need to
suffer through brackets and wires like I did. Similar to
the more widely known Invisalign, MTM uses clear
aligners but unlike Invisalign no “buttons” need to be placed on the teeth and treat-
ment is shorter. Dr. Sokoly has a great interest in
new technology and showed me how innovative
products in ortho, tooth whitening, and others can
be great practice builders.
Wednesday afternoon, I walked a few
blocks down to visit Dr. Sara Cohen and Dr. Isa-
belle Lass of Cohen & Cohen, DDS. These strong
women were great examples of having successful
careers as well as family life. This practice was
originally Dr. Cohen’s grandfather’s, and now
she, her father and Dr. Lass share the office. The
office is large, busy, and productive, a great ex-
ample of a fruitful practice.
On Thursday, I had the opportunity to shadow
and assist Dr. Rustin Levy, a periodontist in downtown,
with 2 surgeries. The first was a crown lengthening pro-
cedure. Unlike other crown lengthening procedures, this
one was a little more involved in that the mesial and dis-
tal roots of adjacent teeth were within too close proximi-
ty to allow for each cleaning. Bone recontouring had to
be done to allow for that, and Dr. Levy also showed me
a tacking suture to better reposition gingival flaps. The
second procedure was an implant placement in the loca-
tion of a previously failed implant. Dr. Levy emphasized
the importance of general dentists having a complete
plan before delegating procedures to specialists.

2015 Alpha Omega Externship Program, continued
I closed out my week of shadowing at Dr. Albert
Citron’s endodontics office in Vienna, VA. The root canal
procedure itself was routine, but following the post-op ra-
diograph, Dr. Citron decided to re-enter the distal canal to
achieve a better result. I know of many dentists who would
not have evaluated their own work as harshly, and would
have let a patient go with work that the dentist was not ful-
ly confident in. Dr. Citron showed me integrity.
While in DC, I had the opportunity to see some of
the monuments and museums. I walked the National Mall,
and had lunch on the steps of the Lincoln memorial after
one of the days of shadowing. I took the opportunity to
spend some time studying for my Part 2 boards in the Library of Congress, surround-
ed by centuries of history. I also saw the pandas at the National Zoo. I even saw my
first baseball game at Nationals Park and got a picture with the Presidents mascots.
I would like to thank all of the dentists for their hospitality and words of wis-
dom, and for making this externship an unforgettable experience. I would also like to
thank Dr. Schlactus, the other Alpha Omega alumni, and the Alpha Omega admin-
istration for organizing this busy week for me and giving me the opportunity to not
only shadow, but to shadow in another city where I would otherwise not have any
connections. These dentists have given me a glimpse at a future career in the Wash-
ington, DC area, and I truly hope to return here someday!

2015 AO International Convention Highlights
Have you been asking yourself, “I know that the Alpha Omega International Convention is right here in DC this year, but I wonder if I should bother attending? After all, I have to pay to go and I don’t know what I will get for the money that I spend? Is it really worth it? I’m here to tell you, YES!! As a regular convention goer, I find that conventions are a lot of fun as well as quite meaningful. First, the fun parts. Convention always starts at registration, which will be all day on December 24. We will need volunteers to “man” the various stations at convention. AO’er are some of the warmest and friendliest people I know. When you volunteer, the reward is that you will make many new friends as you meet out of town guests. Registration is really a day of schmoozing with other members, getting to know them better. That evening is the welcome dinner. Traditionally, it’s a time when old friends who haven’t seen each other for a while reconnect. And, if you’re a newcomer, it’s a great way to meat fraters from around the world, because everyone is super friendly. However, the format of this year’s Welcome Night is a bit different. First, we are paying a special honor to our beloved Ben Williamowsky in his 90th year. Ben is very special. There isn’t anyone who has devoted more time, energy and love to AO and it’s members than Ben. Ben is a true leader who life as been dedicated to the advancement of dentistry and AO. He has inspired many to achieve many great things and has left a permanent legacy on the fraternity and the dental schools in Israel. I encourage each one of you to come and honor him on this very special evening. I know that he will be touched by your presence. And then comes the entertainment, with entertainment and dancing led by the Mark Novak Band. Mark is a cantor and his group is one of only a few that can present both American and Israeli dancing music. He will personally teach us and lead us so that we can all have fun as a group. I guarantee you that you won’t be disappointed. December 25th begins with a welcoming breakfast for all, followed by our first business meeting. All are encouraged to go; we announce award winners during this meeting as well as having some interesting speakers. In the afternoon, those that wish (and most do) participate in our community outreach where we give back to the community by volunteering in a project that will put smiles on people’s faces and improve their living conditions. If past experience is any benchmark, you are certain to return with a deep sense of satisfaction.

C A P I T O L A L U M N O T E S
Convention is a lot of fun, but there is a serious side to it also. Later that afternoon, just before Shabbat, we will have a memorial service, paying tribute to the recently deceased AO family fraters.. Following the memorial service, we will proceed directly into the Shabbat evening service. For me, this is a moving experience, for it defines what is so special about AO. It is through this service, praying with fellow dentist from all over the world, that you realize how special and unique AO is and how important it is to rely on each other. Our history and the events of today point out the importance of joining hands and finding our strength from the support that we give to each other. Following Shabbat service, we affirm our AO community by joining together in a Shabbat din-ner. This is a low-key affair and people enjoy engaging in conversation. Saturday, December 26 is a free day for people to visit the sites of DC. I am sure that our out of town guests would appreciate our members acting as hosts and giving of their time to show them around. Saturday evening is the US Foundation Night. This will be a meaningful, interesting evening with a few local Holocaust Survivors presenting their personal stories. Cocktails and light hor d’oeuvres will be served. Following the Foundation Night, you might want to spend the even-ing out with old/new friends at dinner. On Sunday, December 27, we have planned to go, as a group, to the Holocaust Museum. I am sure this will be a moving experience for many. It will be special to share this experience with our fraters from around the world, sharing and hearing the personal stories of many of our member’s families. The last full day, Monday, December 28, will prove to be a full but interesting day. From 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM we have an interesting and varied CE program planned, presented by top clini-cians and lecturers in dentistry. Dr. Bob Lowe will speak on Bioactive Restorative Techniques. Dr. Greg Winteregg’s presentation will be on Effective Case Presentation Techniques. Dr. Neil Starr will offer an interesting topic on implant restorative techniques and Dr. Barry Freydberg’s topic will be Sleep Apnea. Starting at 6:00 PM, the DC Chapter is sponsoring a cocktail reception in honor of Ben Wil-liamowsky, before Honor’s Night. Don’t miss it, it’s a great schmoozing hour. Honor’s Night is when we formally honor our award recipients as well as our outgoing and incoming officers. It’s an evening of reflection and hope for the future. Following the dinner, the fun will begin with dancing with the DJ. Officially, many will say goodbye at the Fairwell Breakfast on December 29. Some will stay on to see more sites in Washington. Some will attend the optional New Year’s Eve party at the Mansion on O Street. Don’t forget to let Andy Lasky know if you want to go.
