MAS Concert: Toledo Symphony Brass

Quintet

The Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet will perform for the

Musical Arts Series at Firelands on Sunday, April 13 at

3:00 PM. The Quintet consists of two trumpets, a French

horn, a tuba, and a trombone.

This concert is sponsored by Crown Battery with

accommodations by Our Guest Inn. Following the

concert, the Greater Port Clinton Area Art Council will

host a reception for the audience to meet the artists.

Tickets are available at the door for $15 ($12 for

Firelands members); students are admitted free of

charge.

Preschool News We have been making may changes in the preschool

room this month. We recently updated our computers so

that the children can play learning games on the

internet. We also rearranged the room and rediscovered

many toys! We got comfy new chairs for our reading

center. The kids are really enjoying relaxing and reading

in them.

Our themes this month kept us very busy. We

celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday, wore our PJs to school,

had a visit from the Leprechaun, learned about

windy/rainy weather, and read several Pete the Cat

books!

Now that spring has arrived, we are hoping the

playground dries up so we can get outside!!

Faith Endures “Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has

been poured into our hearts” (Romans 5:5). This is the

theme for the Presbyterian Church’s One Great Hour of

Sharing (OGHS) offering.

“In the midst of life’s challenges, it is faith that pulls us

through. We, as the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), invite

you, your congregation, friends, and family to help fill

the hearts of those weathering life’s storms by restoring

hope. Your compassionate gifts to One Great Hour of

Sharing will be used to provide relief to those affected

by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and

assist in the empowerment of the poor and oppressed.”

This offering has always been supported well by our

congregation. You will have an opportunity to

understand what this offering does as you read the

bulletin inserts these next three Sundays. One Great

Hour of Sharing addresses helping those who are

hungry, those who have needs after a natural disaster,

and those who need skills to sustain their lives.

We will lift this offering up to do God’s work on Palm and

Easter Sundays. Envelopes are available on the

gathering table, or you may use your church envelope

indicating a contribution to OGHS.

New Beginnings! You may have been hearing and reading about the “New

Beginnings” program that Firelands is going to be

participating in for much of the rest of this year.

What Is It?

New Beginnings is a program sponsored by the

PC(USA), designed to give churches a chance to take a

good look at who they are, what their strengths and

limitations are, what their community looks like … and

then to think about their future and make some plans

for it.

In other words, instead of fretting about the future and

what it may look like, we’ll get a chance to really think

about it—pray about it, discuss

it, and really get excited about it.

Here’s a further explanation,

taken from the New Beginnings

report:

The Presbyterian Mission

Agency Office of Church

Growth –a ministry of the

Presbyterian Church (USA)—

has a passion for seeing new

life in congregations. With

the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, we hope

this assessment helps your congregation in three

ways. The first intent of this assessment is to help

your congregation come to clarity about decisions

you need to make in terms of the use of your

assets/resources for mission. The second intent is

to give your congregational leaders tools for

defining a future story in mission that is true both

to historic commitments and relevant for 21st

century need. The third intent is to help your

congregation begin to make the shift from an

attractional model of ministry (where people “come

to church” as a place to get their needs met) to a

missional model of ministry where disciples are

empowered to “go from the church” to live as

Christian witnesses in the world. New Beginnings

is a discernment tool designed to empower your

congregation with an assessment and reflection

process to help your congregation be intentional

about discerning God’s call for future mission.

While New Beginnings is a relatively new program for

the Presbyterian Church, our presbytery was one of the

first to participate, with about 14 churches going

through the program three years ago. In fact, you can

read about the experience of one of our churches, First

Presbyterian of McComb, at this website:

http://www.pcusa.org/news/2012/10/9/church-lfts-

new-beginnings/.

What Does It Involve?

The first step of the New Beginnings process is an

assessment by someone from outside the presbytery.

Our assessment will be done by the Rev. Dr. Cheryl Ann

Elfond, who will be here with us

on Thursday, April 24. On that

day she will meet with church

leaders to talk about our finances

and about what happens in the

building during the week. She’ll

get a tour of the building and

grounds and also be driven

around the community. And that

evening we will host an

Appreciative Inquiry session,

to which everyone is invited.

In the Appreciative Inquiry session, someone from our

presbytery will ask a set of questions about what we

think of the church, and everyone who attends will get a

chance to answer them. Since it’s “appreciative” inquiry,

the questions are about what there is about the church

to be valued, not about what our needs or problems are.

Please plan to attend this session—7:00 PM on April 24.

After her time with us in April, Dr. Elfond will write a 50-

60 page report for us detailing what she learned about

this congregation. (I know this step first-hand, as I was

trained as an assessor a couple of years ago and have

done a few visits and reports myself.)

The next step for us will be a two-day cluster meeting,

scheduled June 27-28, likely in Findlay or Toledo, in

which a number of our folks will receive the report, learn

to interpret it, and be prepared to lead the House

Meetings—small group gatherings that are a core part of

continued on next page

Oh, and Prayer!

Although it’s not part of the official New

Beginnings program, we will be praying our

way through this process—seeking to

clearly hear God’s purposes for us.

As soon as I know what that will look like,

I’ll let you know. If you have ideas, talk to

me!

Page 4: April 2014 Trumpet

April 2014 Page 4

the whole process. If you would be willing to lead a

series of small group meetings in the July – September

timeframe, please let me know. I have a few volunteers

already—and I have some people in mind to ask to do

this—but we can always use more.

Here’s what the New Beginnings report says about these

House Meetings:

House Meetings (held in homes or at the church)

should engage at least 50% of the worshipping

congregation to discuss the report. The schedule

for your House Meetings is determined by your

church. Participants will engage the conversation

to discuss what they believe is God’s mission for

the church. Through conversations about these

following questions, you will begin to name and

claim what you feel God is calling you to do and be

in your community:

1. About what are the people in our congregation

deeply passionate?

2. At what do we need to be the best, given our

particular context for mission?

3. What resources do we have that will ensure

that the ministry is sustainable?

We do want you to be part of a House Meeting—your

voice is important. We’ll try to schedule them so that

everyone has a chance to participate.

And Then What?

I don’t know exactly what will happen at the end of our

House Meetings. I know that we’ll bring together the

thoughts and opinions of all the groups, but exactly how

we’ll decide what comes next isn’t written in stone.

Perhaps all the groups will have the same basic ideas.

Perhaps one group will come up with an idea that is so

compelling that everyone will agree to charge forward.

Perhaps … well, who knows, exactly!

What I do know is that it’s important for churches to

take stock periodically, but more important, to get

excited all over again about this particular congregation

and being part of God’s ministry. God has richly blessed

Firelands Church in the past. Let’s look and listen for

God’s blessings on us and through us in the future!

Firelands Family Dinner April 11, 6:00 PM at 1812 Restaurant

Please sign up to go to dinner with your friends at

Firelands. You also may invite your friends to join us;

everyone is welcome. We will be ordering from the

menu. Joyce DellaSantina is the host for the meal—

contact her at 419-960-7719 with questions. The sign-

up sheet is on the gathering table.

Holy Humor Sunday The greatest joke ever:

the one God played on Death

when Jesus was resurrected.

Once again we will celebrate the joy of the resurrection

on the Sunday after Easter—with party hats and kazoos,

with laughter and a bit of giddiness. Stay tuned … and

(what can we say), “Be there or be square!”

WCWA Events April 15: We will meet at 5:30 at the Sandusky Bay

Border Security building (709 SE Catawba Rd) for a

tour of the facility. Then those who would like can go to

Casa Las Palmas afterward for dinner or snacks. Bring a

friend and, for this one, ID.

May 6: We will meet at 5:30 at Bataan Elementary

(525 W 6th St) for a tour of the newly renovated school.

The principle, Kendra VanDoren, will take us on a tour.

Those who would like can go for snacks and drinks to

McCarthy’s downtown after the tour.

Bring your prayer concerns to these events, and if you

have any questions, contact Lori Madison at 419-341-

0483 or [email protected].

Stated Session Meeting Highlights for March 11, 2014 The meeting was opened with distribution of prayer

cards and sharing of prayer requests.

Devotions on the theme “Vision, Fulfilling God’s

Dream” were led by Bob Black.

Treasurer’s Report: Bill Umlauf, Treasurer,

reported that an anonymous estate gift of $4000.00.

has been received. The total Year to Date income of

$16,738.52 is $5761.48 less than budgeted. This

loss is felt to be due to poor weather, which caused

cancellation of worship one week, plus snow and ice

in general making driving difficult. The total TTD

expenses of $28,480.39 are $4,013.23 more than

budgeted due to higher gas, snow removal and

equipment repair/maintenance expenditures. Total

YTD General Fund Income minus total YTD General

Fund Expense results in a current General Fund loss

of $11,741.87. It is noted, however, that our

Balance Sheet continues to show a surplus. The

Preschool Year-to-Date Income minus Expenses

results in a gain of $2004.64.

Spiritual Growth/Christian Education-Bob

Black, Chair. Sunday, May 4th, will be confirmation

of Lily Stouffer, Nic Stouffer, and Merissa Jagucki. A

welcoming reception will be held following the

service. The new members will be invited to join the

adult Sunday school class. Pastor Jeanne talked

about the national church’s Triennial Conference for

youth, which will be held in the summer of 2016.

She hopes the church will get behind these young

people and support their attendance.

March movies were “42” and “Nebraska.” April 4 will

be “The Ten Commandments.” Men’s Forum plans to

meet at Rev. Butcher’s in July and have a steak fry

in August. Plans are underway for an early summer

women’s retreat and a fall all-church retreat.

Property Management-Jack Combs, Chair. We

passed a routine inspection by the State Fire Marshal

but several items were reported: a faulty test switch

on the emergency light/exit sign in the pre-school

and a possible roof leak above Fellowship Hall. The

missing shingles were replaced; the suspected leak

will be addressed in the Spring. The light switches in

the two handicapped restrooms have been replaced

with motion/occupancy sensor switches. Two light

switches in Fellowship Hall need to be replaced. Our

recent propane delivery at the previously agreed

upon cost should last the remainder of the heating

season (unless winter lasts into June). Efforts to

reduce the cost of our copying/printing are ongoing.

Jack and Janine Dress are meeting with several

companies to evaluate the contract/lease for our

copier. They are attempting to get “apples to apples”

dollar figures for our April meeting. Also the

black/white versus color capacities are being

weighed.

Financial Stewardship, Mission Committee and

Outreach Committee had no reports.

Report of the Pastor: Jeanne noted that church

participation and attendance at both worship

services and special programs has been low. In

February there were perhaps only 25 families in

town, and the weather seriously lowered attendance.

Comparing the participation of persons on the online

Bible Study to the Wednesday morning study group

shows that there is a need in the congregation for a

bible study for persons who cannot attend the

morning sessions and that those who do attend may

not be comfortable with the online process. Pastor

will continue with the blog on a sporadic basis to

persons asking to “follow” and will also use Facebook

to determine future usage.

Worship & Music – Kay McIntosh, Chair.

Attendance at the evening Ash Wednesday service is

causing Pastor Jeanne to consider a midday or

afternoon service next year. We will offer a gluten-

free communion bread option starting in Lent. Pastor

Jeanne will make some slight changes to the order of

worship and hopes to have a choir for some Sundays

during Lent. Several committee members have

suggested having elders available for prayer after

the service. We will discuss this at our April meeting.

Susan Larcey has been contacting instrumentalists

to play during our worship services.

New Beginnings: Pastor Jeanne discussed the New

Beginnings program being offered by PC (USA).

Costs of doing the program now and later were

weighed. A majority vote passed our participation

beginning in April.

Pastor Jeanne led a Spiritual Development session

on John 17.

Prayer concerns were voiced and Pastor Jeanne

closed the meeting with prayer.
