From the Editor

First an apology - The Village Voice has recently taken possession of a super

new printer, that folds and staples (as you may have noticed, although we are investigating ways of not using staples.)

The new printer requires a first class degree in Printer Science to fully operate and unfortunately last month’s Village Voice suffered from the fact I only got an E in GCSE Etch-a-sketch. Some of you got the non-final version of the Voice, others the proper version. Sorry.

Here’s hoping this month’s printing goes smoothly and thank you to the brave volunteers who have stepped forward to staff the printer during this delicate operation.

Don’t forget our new website has this and previous months’ news. You can add your own events to the calendar and offer items for sale too. You can find the website at villagevoicetideswell.org.uk

Cocaine found

Two men from the south of the UK have been charged in connection with

the discovery of a substantial amount of cocaine in Tideswell.

The men, aged 31 and from Swanley in Kent and aged 26 and from South East London, have been charged with conspiring to evade a prohibition on the importation of a class A drug and conspiring to evade a prohibition on the importation of firearm ammunition and have appeared before magistrates in Chesterfield.

On Monday, March 11, a large amount of drugs and several bullets were found underneath a vehicle in Tideswell.

The men were arrested in the village on Wednesday, March 13.

Safer Communities Officer Phil Maycock told the Village Voice: “No one has anything to worry about. The fact that these men were arrested in Tideswell was coincidence and Tideswell was not the target for this crime.”

Friends Walk

Great Longstone website publisher Let’s Stay Peak District is a Corporate

Partner of the CPRE charity Friends of the Peak District and provided the inspiration for their annual walk, taking place this year on Saturday April 13th 2013 from magnificent Thornbridge Hall.

Offering a choice of 2 great walks (8 and 24 miles) the entry fee for each is £13.50 (£6 for under 16s) to include light refreshments and discounts on various Peak District related goodies.

This has proved to be a very popular walk in the last 2 years and makes an ideal half or full day’s hike for a group of friends, families or colleagues; all for an excellent cause too.

Friends of the Peak District is an independent charity set up to fight inappropriate development in the Peak District thus protecting its unique landscapes for future generations.

Details from friendsofthepeak.org.uk or call Danny Anderson (FPD) on 0114 279 2655

Dog Poo Again

Being the proud owner of a puppy for the first time I am now an expert in

poo collection.

It has been drawn to my attention that this is not only important in public places, on our lanes and footpaths, but also on land where cattle or sheep may graze.

There are two nasty parasites which may be transmitted through dogs’ faeces: one causes Neosporosis in cattle and results in calves being aborted, and the other causes Sarcocytosis in sheep (a neurological disease resulting in death).

Even if you are on agricultural land, please pick up your dog’s waste.

Jane Diehl, Litton

Worst Dog Poo Lane

Perhaps we could nominate the worst spots in the District for dog mess. I’d

like to start off by nominating Meadow Lane, just down from the allotments. There must be a pile every five or six paces.

This lane is one that many visitors take into the village, walking up from Millers Dale. What must their first impression be of our lovely village?

Nominations for May’s worst road to The Village Voice by the usual means. What prize should we present the dog walkers of the winning lane though?

Beetle Mania

On 25th to 27th April ,Tideswell Community Players perform

Metamorphosis, an everyday story about a man who wakes to find he has become a giant beetle!

Based on the famous tale by Franz Kafka, the play is written by Stephen Berkoff and has been stunning audiences for many years. Why has Gregor changed into an insect? How will his family cope? What does the future hold? With black humour and scenes of a family in turmoil as Gregor’s fate unfolds, this play has some familiar faces and some new to the Tideswell stage. Not to be missed!

To be performed Upstairs at The George, 7:30pm 25th to 27th April. Look out for posters. Tickets available soon from

Tideswell Post Office and Litton Stores. Bookings on [email protected] or 01298 871063.

There is still time to get involved if you would like to help in any way with the play. Coming up on 11th May: New Perspectives with their latest play Entertaining Angels, a story about a village and the mysterious stranger who arrives one day. More information next time.

Slow Down

A cat was buried this weekend in Tideswell. She was a small, sociable

black cat called Mabel. Not mine, but she was as friendly to me as she was to everybody. She was even friendly to dogs.

It looks as if Mabel must have been hit by a car, on Terrace Road. She was no great age and still quick on her feet.

Cats don’t always have the best of road sense. But their chances are greatly reduced by the speed at which people sometimes drive on Terrace Road. At 20 mph she might have stood a chance. People come up and down our road at 30 or even 40 mph. Why? How much time are you going to save in a few hundred yards by putting your foot down?

I shall miss Mabel coming to greet me as I walk up the road. Town Head will miss Mabel. Please drive carefully on Tideswell’s streets.

PARISH COUNCIL MATTERS

At the March meeting no members of the public were present. Residents may

attend any monthly meeting, and may put questions to the Council at the beginning of the session. Our next meeting will be in the Library on Monday 8th April at 7.15pm.

Two of the Council employees, Tony and Paul are off work sick at present. We wish them both a speedy recovery. Meantime, Mick is doing a fine job, especially in the wintery conditions.

The Council is to hold a special meeting to discuss the new arrangements for the Public Toilets, and any refurbishment needed. The routine matters of the Council were discussed, and payments made. The report from the cemetery group was disappointing. Following clearance of the site, there has been more fly tipping , waste such as car batteries have been dumped there. The Council is to install CCTV cameras to name and shame those who do this disrespectful and costly tipping. Sadly, there is a problem of a different kind in Bank Square/ Gratton Garden. Dogs are fouling the area which has been covered with bark , under the trees. Please ensure that if you have a dog, it is not allowed to foul what is a quiet resting place for people to sit.

The garden is maintained by volunteers who work hard to keep Tideswell a pleasant place to live.

An enquiry about a planning issue was received. Any decisions are made by the Peak District National Park, and queries should be addressed to them. The Parish Council is able to comment on plans

Thank You Eric

Eric Parker , from Dove Holes, is best known in Tideswell as the organiser of

the Line Dancing group on Tuesday evenings in the Institute.

For 27 years Eric has been the Treasurer of High Peak Diabetic Self Help Group. He has now retired from that role, but is still a respected and valued member of the group.

The group is also grateful to members of Tideswell Parish Church for the display which runs through April.

Anyone who has diabetes, or who has a member of their family with diabetes, knows how isolated people feel, especially when they are first diagnosed. The group welcomes new members to its meetings at the Buckingham Hotel on the third Monday

of each month, at 7.00pm. For those who do not wish to meet others in this way, Diabetes UK has websites and a Careline; Diabetes Research & Wellness has similar internet help.

Tidza Ramblers

The temperature was low on the last two walks both in the Eyam area.

Fortunately Stoke Ford is a sheltered place for a mid-morning break, however there was no beauty spot for lunch which was spent huddled by a wall. Watching the air ambulance land later was a timely reminder to put out the charity bags due for collection next morning.

In March we welcomed two newcomers, one of whom was perhaps a little overdressed but did look keen and eager to set off. It was sleeting at the start and the scenery was in monochrome. Some hadn’t seen the Roman baths in Stoney Middleton. The steepish climb from there took us to an area where brilliant white was the only colour, snow lying undisturbed in woodland.

Seating for lunch was a snow cleared form with a multi - purpose survival bag fitting neatly over it. It was an enjoyable day and four legged Maddie, in diamante studded pink leather collar, had set a good pace.

Future walks will include the Roaches and the Three Shires Head.

Food Festival Fun In The Garden

Don’t forget to come and visit the Kitchen Garden behind St John’s

Institute on the day of the Food Festival. There’s going to be lots going on:

• A Garden Quiz for all young gardeners In the morning

• A lunchtime BBQ• A ’Make your Own Pot and Plant your

Own Seeds’ session in the afternoon

It’s an opportunity for everyone to come and see what has been achieved – the Garden was no more than a building site at the last Food Festival but now we have beds (raised and otherwise) ready for planting with a thriving array of soft fruit and herbs that have survived the winter (well,

mostly). We’re always willing to share our experiences and listen to advice.

So please come and see us on 4 May and in the meantime, if you would like to be involved with this community garden or have anything you would like to donate to the garden, please contact Maureen (01298 871542) or Judy (01298 872408).

Plan for Wakes 2013

Thank you all for attending our gathering in March. It was a great success and

the continued support the team are getting from the village is great!

One of the main things from the meeting was that people really wanted to see more streets and houses decorated so get your thinking caps on and your crepe paper orders in!

Carnival is now less than 3 months away and on the back of suggestions from you all we are busy with the paperwork and planning the programme of events. We will be present at the Tideswell Food Festival in May, so if you don’t want roping in then try and avoid our stall!

Tideswell Wakes Queen - we are currently pulling together a photographic ‘timeline’ of Tideswell Wakes Queens from years gone by to the present day. We would be really

grateful if you would let us use any pictures you have. If you could forward them to us via email that would be great but if you only have a hard copy please contact Trish Smith or Sharon Jellis and we will copy these with your permission and get them back to you. 2013 currently has a vacancy. Could it be you this year?!

We have now launched our website and our new Facebook page so please ‘Like’ us if you are au fait with cyberworld. Remember to email us also if you want to get in touch.

The Miller’s Tale

At the March meeting of the History Club we were given a talk about the

restoration of Heage Windmill by Mary and Brian Naylor. It was a story of much foresight, hard work and, good fortune in obtaining the large grants of money necessary for such an ambitious project. Old photographs showed that for much of the last century, the tower was in a ruinous state. The cap had been blown off, the sails gone and it had been struck by lightning.

The story began with a 1791 advert in the Derby Mercury for a stone- mason to build the tower. However, the catch was, that he had to quarry and dress the stone himself! Consequently it wasn’t finished until 1797, but it was well built and of a very efficient design. The cap on top could rotate freely and the rear fan adjusted the position of the cap so that the sails faced the wind. The actual grindstones came from near Paris, called “Burr” stones, they are pieced together from blocks of very hard silica (our millstones, from say Millstone Edge are too coarse and were only used for animal feed – provender). The ideal wind speed for milling is about 20 m.p.h. Above 28 m.p.h. the brake has to be applied and the milling stopped, otherwise the mill would shake itself to pieces as in 1894 when the cap and sails were torn off in a gale. She was later rebuilt - this time with six sails to give extra power, but in 1919 was struck by lightning which split one of the main timbers.

Times had not been so good after the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 (they protected British producers – but made the price of bread desperately high). After 1846 foreign grain could be imported but that meant that the big flour producers could

build huge new dock-side roller-mills and so undercut our local millers. Decline set in and slowly she became an abandoned ruin, much loved by countryside artists. One of them – Karl Wood – actually cycled around England to make beautiful paintings of mills.

Eventually D.C.C. with great foresight bought the mill for £300 (they still own it) and a band of enthusiasts embarked on the restoration. It cost so much grant money because even after the cap and sails had been constructed, they had to be lifted by a crane costing £200 per hour and to get the crane on site, a road costing £40,000 had to be laid. As a concession to modern materials, the huge brake ring is now lined with Ferodo type materials and the spar which was split by lightning is fastened together with Araldite! Nothing is ever straight forward – in 2001 they were held up for months because of foot and mouth and they had to dig away about 8 tons of bird droppings from inside the building. However the huge vertical drive shaft (made from a single tree trunk) was still serviceable and is still working today after 215 years. Learning from the past, they have installed lightning conductors.

The first wheat was milled in 2003 and the mill is open for guided tours at weekends and Bank Holidays, from April to October. This talk was filled with lively discussions and questions and answers with the audience and they sold quite a few bags of flour! Many thanks Mary and Brian. The talk on April 11th has the intriguing title of “Notable and Notorious Women of Derbyshire” by Joan Ward. Everyone welcome (in the Institute at 8pm.)

Will-ing to Help

Bakewell & Eyam Community Transport is launching a new legacy programme

that will enable people to support the local charity in its work for years to come.

Now over 20 years old, the not-for-profit organisation based at Great Longstone continues to help local residents and community groups throughout the Peak District with safe, caring and reliable transport. It offers particular assistance for people who are disadvantaged by age, disability or rural isolation, as well as providing affordable minibus transport for dozens of community groups and local schools. BECT’s fleet of 11 fully accessible minibuses, plus a large volunteer-run community car scheme, provides everyday transport for shopping, medical appointments and social visits. The organisation also supplies specialist educational and social care transport under contract to Derbyshire County Council.

The new programme sets out the steps you need to take in order to leave BECT a gift in your will, as well as showing what your money will go towards and the positive difference the organisation makes – and wants to continue to make – in our local communities. Members of BECT staff and trustees will be available to confidentially discuss the wider issues and answer any general questions about our organisation.

To find out more about BECT’s new legacy scheme please call 01629 641920 or email [email protected] to request a leaflet or book an appointment to speak to someone.

Come & Sing again

Following the success of their first ever ‘Come and Sing’ day in March 2012,

Tideswell singers will be hosting a day to ‘Come and Sing Through the Centuries’ in the beautiful Cathedral of the Peak in Tideswell on Saturday April 20th.

We have chosen works by Tallis, Purcell, Handel, Stainer, Elgar and Stanford from the rich heritage of English church music. Howard Goodall’s popular setting of Psalm 23 and a piece specially written for the occasion shows living composers are continuing this tradition.

There will be a concert performance by participants with guest musicians at 6pm for which audience tickets are available and there will be an opportunity for everyone to socialise after the performance with wine and cheese

We invite you to come and join us for what will be an enjoyable and uplifting day when we will practise and perform beautiful pieces representing every century from the early 1500s through to the present day.

This event welcomes singers of all levels of experience. If you are not tempted to join the singing, why not come to the evening performance at 6pm?

You will be moved by the wonderful sound of massed voices and impressed by the high standard achieved.

Village Drama on Stage

The very popular New Perspectives Theatre Company return to the village

in May with their latest play. Chances are you’ll have seen them perform in the village before, or know someone who has. Last here with A Christmas Carol, they also brought Those Magnificent Men and The Hired Man to name but two of many excellent plays they have brought to the village over the years.

On 11th May they bring Entertaining Angels to the stage at BP School. Set in a village, there’s a new vicar and a colourful community. Then an enigmatic stranger turns up with a lasting impact on the village...

Tideswell Food Festival

Tideswell’s third annual Food Festival is on Saturday 4th May. As we go to press

there are over 40 confirmed bookings for stalls with more promising to book. There will be lots of street entertainment too. It should be another fantastic day.

If you, your business or your village organisation would like a stall, please see Festival organiser Phil Walker at Tideswell Stores as soon as possible. It’s a great way to promote your business or raise funds for your group.

Phil is also on the look out for stewards to help the day go smoothly. If you’d like to volunteer for a ‘shift’ then please give Phil your name as soon as possible.

All we need now is for the snow to go!

“A Personal Approach to a Professional Service”

World Book Night

Spring is in the air (apparently – though as I’m writing this it’s snowing again…)

and that means 23 April is not far off. Why’s that important? Well, it’s the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and death, and UNESCO’s international day of the book. And it’s also World Book Night, a celebration of reading and books, and to mark this tens of thousands of volunteers are giving away specially chosen and printed books to share their love of reading. Peak Volumes will have 20 copies of Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair and 20 copies of Victoria Hislop’s the Island to give away this year.

The Eyre Affair is gloriously funny. It’s set in another 1985, somewhere in the could-have-been, with policemen who can travel across time, a Welsh republic, a great

interest in all things literary, and a woman called Thursday Next.

The Island is passionate and gripping. It follows Alexis Fielding to a small village in Crete in a quest to know more about her mother’s past, where she finds some tragic family secrets.

To find out more, have a look at the World Book Night website at worldbooknight.org or call in to see us on Tuesday 23 April to pick up a copy. If you are lucky enough to get given one of the specially bound books on World Book Night, either from us or from somewhere else, please make sure that you pass it on after you read it, especially if you know people who don’t regularly read.

Dogs, got Unruly Owners?A chance to tame dog owners comes to Tideswell with the arrival of Happy Houndz classes. Led by dog trainer Gerry Burton who’s been working with dogs, and their owners, for around 16 years, first in kennels and for the last 7 years in obedience training.

She run classes in Buxton and Macclesfield with a colleague but since moving to Little Hucklow last September has decided to set up on her own as well.

She is qualified in dog training theory and applied dog training, canine psychology and behaviour, and working with and rehabilitating rescue dogs. She’s a canine

1st Aider and a member of the Kennel Club Accredited Instructor Scheme (KCAI).

The class will be for anyone who would like a well mannered, happy dog who fits in with their lifestyle and is a pleasure to own. It’s a small informal class, not competition standard, but relaxed and fun. It’s open to any dog regardless of age, even if it’s just for a bit of socialisation for dog... and owner!

It will be a 6 week course of 1 hour per week on a Monday 2 ‘til 3pm starting April 15th. Anyone who would like to know more can contact Gerry on 01298 871210 or 07500 169185 or email her on [email protected]

Bowl’d Over

Woe, woe & thrice woe; we can’t go bowling on Sat. 23rd Mar. because

of the lousy weather. I can smell the rank disappointment & frustration from here. Fingers crossed that we can go ahead on April 6th.

The ‘Rack your Brains Quiz’ was a fine success. A good time was had by all despite the merciless mick-taking of the rascally Wain & Wright. The bowling club made a net profit of just over £150 for which we are exceedingly grateful; thank-you good citizens of Tidza.

We haven’t been up to much since the last edition of BO (could this be a Scratch ‘n’ Sniff mutation?) apart from almost being turned into Christmas turkeys at Rowsley, where we were stuffed, trussed, but mercifully not mounted.

We had our AGM recently, which is only marginally less entertaining than Rock ‘n’ Bowls. Here are some selected extracts fro Chairman John Hallows’ report:- • He thanked David Wain for all the

work he has done to improve our floodlights – all we have to do now is improve our bowling!

• He further thanked those who’d maintained our pavilion, especially the carpet tile layers & the painters who didn’t get their work mixed up.

• The Tues. Mixed Up Pairs had, with much play improvement & winning more matches than last year, dramatically improved their league position by moving from bottom to … 2nd from bottom.

• The Thurs. Vets, promoted the year before last & demoted last year, are

doing a fair imitation of yo-yos but nonetheless having fun despite the weather.

• John thanked Andrew for organising a very full calendar of friendly matches which we all enjoy. He wryly observed that the Sheffield matches were very popular indeed, but that the standard of bowling seemed to drop after tea. A voice from the back said something about John being head of catering quality control.

• This led him seamlessly on to compliment our team of caterers who had almost civilised us by getting us to eat off proper crockery.

I hope to see lots of you on the green on Fridays after 6pm from 6/4/13.

Griff - [email protected]

Youth Team Cricket

As advertised in the Village Voice, we are keen to hear from children who

are currently between 8 and 11 years of age who would be interested in joining our training sessions from May. The sessions will be run by an experienced and fully qualified ECB Level 2 Coach.

There will be a membership fee of £10 per year and a charge of £3 per session; training sessions will run from 4.30 to 5.45pm and are likely to be held on Wednesday or Thursday nights.

We have some names, but the idea is to put together an U13 team for the 2014 season, and we are still a few short of an XI. Anyone wishing to join should contact either Andy Stelling on 01298 872042 or Bob Walkden on 01298 871804
