Yom Ha’atzma’ut

Information Source: myjewishlearning.com

Yom Ha’ztzma’ut also know as Israel Independence Day will be observed this year on April 16th. Yom Ha'atzmaut in Israel is always preceded by Yom Hazikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers. The message of linking these two days is clear: Israelis owe their independence--the very existence of the state--to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for it. Israelis celebrate Yom Ha'atzmaut in a variety of ways. In the cities, the nighttime festivities may be found on the main streets. Crowds gather to watch public shows offered by municipalities and the government. Many spend the night dancing Israeli folk dances or singing Israeli songs. During the daytime, thousands of Israeli families go out on hikes and picnics. Army camps are open for civilians to visit and to display the recent technological achievements of the Israeli Defense Forces. Yom Ha'atzmaut concludes with a ceremony granting the "Israel Prize" recognizing individual Israelis for their unique contribution to the country's culture, science, arts, and the humanities.

What is Metro Transport?

Metro Transports mission is to provide quality transportation services for seniors and disabled adults living within the

UJC MetroWest area regardless of their ability to pay for these services. Transportation is one of the largest problems faced

by seniors and disabled adults living in this community and throughout the United States.

Metro Transport attempts to fill in the gap of service that remains beyond what county and state transportation programs can

provide. We encourage seniors who shouldn’t be driving to voluntarily give up their driver’s licenses. Metro Transport strives to

provide a high level of service to our frailest population and to provide all services with the utmost care and kindness.

Our Service Area is Essex, upper Union, and lower Morris Counties

In the Neighborhood By Sandye Garrison

I am so glad so many of you came out to enjoy our “Vegas Nite” featuring Doreen, Joey and Danny Arminio. Weren’t they great? A special “Thank You” to all who helped make the evening a success. They include Evelyn Sperling, Wanda Robinson, Mildred Goldberg, Esther Torres, Bea Gerwirtz, Mickey Spector and Lois Beninkorb. Our building is buzzing with a bevy of improvements which include updated security, a new dining room and new wide screen information screens. It looks like spring is ready to embrace us all. We are fortunate to have had people like Shannon join our already vibrant community.

She has managed to steal everyone’s heart, just as Elisha has. They show us that warmth intelligence and caring go a long way.

What an outstanding team! We will finally get to make our trek to "Daughters of Israel." The trip to Daughters is planned for the month of May. Sign up at the bulletin board so you can be included. We will post the names of our friends living there and bring each one a plant. No extra walking is required since the facility is supplying us with a meeting room.
