We started to count the Omer – a measure for a grain offering – the evening of the second Seder. Each night we count the weeks and days passed as we anticipate Shavuot. It takes just one minute to fulfill this mitzvah in the evenings. Our synagogue calendars contain the days of the Omer, or you may download an Omer calendar from uscj.org/Objects/Documents/OMER5773.pdf. We observe Lag B’Omer (the 33 rd day of the Omer) at sunset on Saturday, 27 APR 2013. We suspend the semi-mourning practices observed during the Omer (e.g., some communities do not listen to music or cut their hair) to celebrate the end of the plague among Rabbi Akiva’s students. Many in Israel go on outings and light bonfires. It is also customary for many Jewish 3-year-old boys to get their first haircut on this day. Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH), holds a Lag B’Omer picnic dinner at the synagogue on Sunday, 28 APR 2013, commencing at 5:00 PM. We offer kosher hamburgers and hot dogs, along with soda and snacks. The cost is $7.50 for those 13 and older; $5.00 for those between 6 and 12; and free for those less than six. Our bonfire – limited to a grill’s enclosure – includes a mortgage burning celebration. Kindly RSVP by Friday, 19 APR 2013 so we may purchase the appropriate amount of supplies. Please include your preference for a vegetarian alternative with your payment. We also hold our annual meeting on Sunday, 19 MAY 2013 in the synagogue sanctuary. Shacharit starts at 8:30 AM, with brunch and the meeting commencing at 10:00 AM. In addition to the presenting the 2013-14 budget and board summaries, we will hold an election for a synagogue trustee. Membership remains the heart of our synagogue. We need volunteers to serve at the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue outreach table at the Simon Family Jewish Community Center (JCC) on Sunday, 28 APR 2013, from 12:30- 5:00 PM.
