NEWS AND COMMENTCANCELLATION OF JUNE EVENT   Due to the loss of land atWalliswood we have had to cancel the event. Efforts had been madeto find another site without success and in this connection have beenin touch with Horsham ACU Club. They have a trial at Kingsfold on

May 19th but you will need any ACU License or take one out on theday.

For next year we are hoping to see the landowner Mr Batchelor tosee if we can book 1 or 2 dates as the site in our locality. Meantime

Horsham ACU have an event at Holmbush on 28th July and one at

Plaistow on October 27th where we are trying to arrange a jointevent under an AMCA permit. More news when available.

CANCELLATION OF JUNE NEWSLETTER   As there will be no trialto report we have decided to omit the news, all details of July camp-ing weekend at Northlands will be in the May issue. That will be

delayed until after the Group trial on May 12th so the results can beincluded.

And don’t forget if you are going to ride in the Group Event itis pre-entry, forms are available from Mike. Also if you canobserve at this we need you – again tell Mike!

AGM   17th April   8 pm at The Six Bells, Newdigate (it’s a Wednesday)

THANKS ERIC We are always delighted to receive a contributionfrom a member, Eric’s itinerary for this year was very interesting, ifyou would like to join him on any of his ride outs contact him on01403 731810.

MORE NOTES ON JOINT TRIALS WITH OLD HORSHAM CLUBBefore final arrangements are made to outline we have agreed theywill be run under an AMCA permit and all paperwork will be HorshamRiders. Horsham ACU will lay out the course but HR punch cardsand punches will be used and we will prepare the results for the web-site. HR will take the money and pay the landowner, Horsham ACUwill enter at the price of HR riders. It sounds complex but it willwork out to the advantage of both clubs.

Incidentally when HACU club visited us n February they had a veryeasy day, ½ way scores were 21, 17, 19 – ie very easy for us too,but they say they mark them a bit harder than we do, we’ll find out!

ONE ROUTE CHARITY TRIAL   Rome Woods    7th April

Because he’s good at it Clint gets landed with setting out this eventeach year, he doesn’t mind as it’s less flags to put in and clear up.Team Harleys had an easy time as few were called on apart fromGary M and Mike who was keen to exercise his Pampera. The trialturned out easier than anticipated with a middle score of 13. Clintsaid he expected some sections to wear worse but they had driedout overnight. Whatever, there were no moans and many compli-ments and £125.60 was raised for Riders for Health after expensesso we’ll do it again next year.

A one route trial attracts new faces and several ride twin shocks andbikes harder to ride making an easy event a little harder (???) DaveRenham and Mike on Pamperas (surprisingly more suited in the spe-cial test), Andrew W on a Honda XL, Sean P on a Majesty, Steve Ami-stead (from New Zealand) on a Fanny B, Gordon on a Bultaco, Ian Ja Tiger Cub, John P and Gary B on Fantics and Steve F on a Honda. All that making for an interesting field of riders apart from the usualGas Gas, Scorpas etc.

In the registration office things were steady with no great queues,we expected more as it had been in TMX but we had 46 entries.Earlybirds are always Adrian and Adam, Ian J had been delayed by a

Page 4: April 2013 Horsham Riders News

bloke pushing one of those old squat BMW boxer twins (the onesyou couldn’t lean or you’d knock the head off!), Ian went back tohelp him lift it into his van – it was so heavy he was still puffing.Elaine arrived with Nigel, she said it was cold and was very wrappedup with so many layers! I suggested we could play pass the parcelwith her, unwrapping slowly when the music stopped.

Benge and Pete entered to await their lowest score in 25 years but itwas Jesse who surprised, he’s so tall I had to tell his waistband thatI used to pat him on the head. Harry R had left with this cards thenreturned to say he hadn’t paid, he needed a congratulatory pat onthe head from Pope Hobbit who was fortunately standing in the cara-van or he wouldn’t have reached! Anita had been delegated to signon for John Y, she says she should be paid for her services but Johnannounced he’s accidentally left his wallet at home,

Most had got started but Paul B was left behind kicking the bike andhimself for the problem, Mick Husk was advising but it still took 20mins to start, that’s when we went to do the Special Test, we wereearly. Tom H was first round but he shot by in a hurry to stay thatway, then did another lap in time for the test on his second lap. Some riders had never heard of these sort of speed bits as decidersbefore, others enjoyed it and wanted it on every lap to get the op-portunity to beat their own times. It was good fun and very competi-tive, even Steve F who said when he sat waiting in the box hewasn’t bothered, till Fiona said 3, 2 1 – go! And he wound it on hard, beating Craig C by a tenth of a second. Most enjoyable though wasMike fast approaching the end and overshot the box by a bikeslength and landed on his ear for a failure! Dave R was fastest andPaul B next. Later Mike, on a Pampera like Dave asked for anothergo, to beat Dave, he didn’t as he’d ridden an extended route. Therewere a few failures and a few didn’t make it or do it, whatever, weall thank Fiona for doing such split second work whilst holding a maddog!

At the finish John P said he’s had to retire as the fan had stoppedworking and the engine oil had water in it – sounds expensive. MickH didn’t hand one card in, Graham K had been riding with James Tboth were so slow coming round they missed the special test, Jameshad a lot of clutch trouble and eventually had to retire. Andrew Wwas overheating and didn’t find his XL suitable for the route. DaveR bothered to finish, that’s a change and Phil and Derek TW werevery happy with the trial and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even Elaine

Page 5: April 2013 Horsham Riders News

only recently up from the red route finished on 36 saying 20 of thatwas on one section. She was just 6 behind Nigel. Poor Kieran G –he told me he’d fived every section on his first lap and dropped 130in total almost unbelievable when we had 3 riders clean, 5 on 1, and3 on 2 and ½ way score of only 13. A surprise rider on 1 was SteveA on the Francis Barnett which Mike tells me is very special. He gotit through Mick Andrews, it had been more than completely restored, tuned and electronic ignition – cost? £4000! He rode it well in prepa-ration for the pre 65 (!) Scottish. Ian J had lost his cards after 3laps but they were handed in and he told me to add 18 to his scorewhich I wrote on his card – initially dnf, when I eventually told Fionashe had to redo the results – the trouble we go to to please our cus-tomers.

Apparently that muddy climb did deteriorate for the late riders, Clintwas right but it didn’t happen early enough! Next time I suggestedthe one route event should comprise 4 yellow sections, 4 blue and 2white in each group progressively harder, but in the end it all de-pends on the condition of the notorious Rome Woods.

Thanks to Clint, Gary and Mike for a good event, and Fiona for work-ing everyone up with the 3,2,1, go!
