Some Practical and Spiritual Touchstones for Lent and Easter

I. Practical—PARISH LEADERSHIP and STRUCTURE LENT is a time of walking with Christ to the Cross, and our worship and education have invited us to the solemnity of self-examination, holy companionship with each other, and the sacramentality of feasting and fasting. The Lenten season has also embraced self-examination in our parish as we accepted a new budget and voted on new leadership at St. Alban’s. We celebrated the gift of leadership we have received from outgoing vestry members: Meg Clark, Fletch Fletcher, Robin Harris, and Sal Piazza, senior warden. In thanks, we celebrate new vestry members Jennifer James, Bob Monsarrat, and Bob Philips, and our new wardens, Lynne Tappan, junior warden, and Dan Fulton, senior warden. Your vestry retreated on March 9-10 to form community and prepare to lead you in leadership. In this issue of The Red Door, I would like to share with you principles of ministry your wardens and I set as the foundation of our retreat. First, the main point of ministry is the KINGDOM OF GOD (Mark 1:14-15; Matthew 5:17-20, 6:25, 31-33). This is what Jesus proclaimed. This is God’s ministry into which the Church (all the baptized) is invited. Second, Christian leadership is SERVANT LEADERSHIP (Isaiah 41:8-10; 42:1-10a, 18-21; 43:1-3a, 4a, 5a, 8, 10-13). As the Son of God is the servant of all, Christ’s body is called to be the servant of creation. Leaders in Christ do not lord it over others, but lead by serving (Luke 22:24-27). Time and energy for the retreat was the new vestry’s first gift of service to St. Alban’s. Third, the work of leaders is to INVITE UNITY and to DRAW OUT OTHERS’ GIFTS (Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-16). Unity is central: the Lord made us part of one another, each with differing gifts for the building up of the body (I Cor12:4-27). Each of us is called to use the gifts God gave us—and God attached JOY to the offering of our gifts, so that we find our human fulfillment in using these God-given gifts. All of us, but especially our leaders, are called to invite and make places for the offering of each other’s gifts for ministry. Fourth, we are called forth IN COMMUNITY, TWO BY TWO (Genesis 7:8-9, Mark 6:7, Luke 10:1). It doesn’t make sense for only one person in the parish to know something—for if that person is out of town, our functioning can be hampered. I invite us to share knowledge two by two; to visit people two by two; to pray together, to cook together, to serve together, all two by two. It divides the work and multiplies the joy (not to mention the efficiency)!

Deadline for the May/June issue of The Red Door: April 21

Building on these principles, the Vestry began to build a model for engaging the creativity, initiative, and desires of all of us for ministry. The first draft imagines four ministry areas: Foundations, including finance, building and grounds, administration. Worship, including creating weekly and festive liturgies. Formation, including education for adults, youth and children, stewardship, preparation for baptism and marriage, welcoming newcomers. Community, including social concerns, pastoral care, neighborhood events. Each area will have one or two vestry liaisons who will link committees to the source of encouragement, funding and authority of the parish. If you have a new idea, a project or ministry you would like to be part of, you will be able to approach the vestry liaison who can help your call be fulfilled. I am thrilled with the energy and talent, the commitment and creativity, of our vestry, and of their willingness to support and encourage each of us as we participate in the ministries to which the Lord has called St. Alban’s parish. You will hear more as the vestry develops this plan, which is part of our Resurrected Body! II. Spiritual: CONNECTING OUR STORIES TO THE STORY HOLY WEEK and the TRIDUUM is the lynchpin of the year. I invite you not to miss participating with your congregation in this cosmic turning from death to life, the focal meaning of our very lives. TRIDUUM means “three days,” Thursday through Sunday (sounds like four days? keep reading J) Remember that the Hebrews counted time from sundown to sundown. The first day, therefore, is sundown Thursday to sundown Friday, during which we will celebrate Maundy Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on April 5, and Good Friday at 12:15 p.m. The second day is sundown Friday to sundown Saturday with our second Good Friday service at 7:30 PM. EASTER: “And on the third day . . .” The third day is the Day of Resurrection, sundown Saturday to sundown Sunday. The EASTER VIGIL will be 8 PM on Saturday night, the most glorious liturgy of the whole year! And EASTER MORNING we will have two services at 8 and 10:15, with Holy Baptism at 10:15 and an Easter egg hunt following the service. Come and complete the journey with Christ from death to resurrection. Take your place in our story! With love in Christ, Amma Susan+

Caring and Sharing April: Neighborhood Nest Program at Neighborhood House The Neighborhood Nest is a community-based prenatal health promotion program for low-income pregnant women. It is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during pregnancy and the first year of an infant’s life in an effort to reduce premature births and infant mortality. In conjunction with the Caring and Sharing offering donations, the Social Concerns Committee is also organizing a collection during April of items needed by new mothers and babies participating in the Neighborhood Nest program. Items greatly needed are:

• Diapers (all sizes) • Wipes • Baby shampoo • Baby detergent (detergent free of dyes and perfume)

Please bring any baby item donations to the Living Room through the month of April.

Spotlight On…. Rheanna Goodrich Hello everyone. My name is Rheanna Goodrich. As many of you know, I am the new part-time administrative assistant here at St Alban’s. I am so glad to be a part of such a wonderful and welcoming congregation and I look forward to getting to know you all. As I am learning about you, here is a little about me. I have been married to Tim Goodrich for 10 years this summer. We are very proud parents of our little angel Kaili who turned 1 in January. We have lived in the Columbus area for about 5 ½ years now. We were drawn here by God’s Call in my life to the ministry of Word and Sacrament and my subsequent decision to attend Trinity Lutheran Seminary. I graduated with a Master of Divinity last May and am currently waiting for my first call. Outside of my love for God and my call to ministry, I love to be outdoors; gardening,

hiking, swimming, or just going for a walk at the zoo. I will take any opportunity to be outside. Tim and I also love art and all forms of creativity and are currently in the beginning phases of getting our own design and photography studio up and running called Silver Maple Studios.

This is a very exciting time of change in our lives and I am looking forward to my time here at St. Alban’s for many reasons, not the least of which is to have a greater understanding of how my brothers and sisters in Christ worship and glorify God from the Episcopal point of view. Thank you so much for inviting me to part of your ministry in this time and place.

In Peace, Rheanna Goodrich

Alban’s Remarkable Kingdom (ARK) The Good Shepherd is one of the most tender images given to us in scripture and Psalm 23 is one of the best-known and well-loved passages of scripture… add those two together and you have a fabulous cycle rich in imagery and language! The story for this cycle is a combination of the Good Shepherd story from John and the parable of the Lost Sheep. Join us at 10:15 a.m. for a wonderful unit to end our church school year! B.R.E.A.D. = Building Responsibility, Equality And Dignity St. Alban’s is one of B.R.E.A.D.’s 50-plus local congregations supporting key justice issues, such as, access to healthcare, affordable housing, reducing truancy, regulation of payday lending, remedying neighborhood blight, etc. The B.R.E.A.D process for addressing justice issues involves listening to problems, researching a problem to seek supportable solutions, obtaining commitments from responsible public officials, and following those commitments to effective conclusions. Please be aware of the following important events and participate as possible: The Franklin County Restorative Justice Community Summit The Crime & Violence Committee of B.R.E.A.D. is building broad community support for a Restorative Justice Summit. This is an approach to diversion that focuses on the needs of victims, offenders, as well as the involved community. Restorative Justice is a process that provides healing and help for the offender in order to avoid future offenses. Programs involved with this approach report significant decreases in re-offending rates. The Summit will bring together key officials in the community and experts (Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown, Lead Juvenile Judge Elizabeth Gill, County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien, County Defender Yeura Venters, and the NAACP) to explore implementing a Restorative Justice program in the Franklin County Juvenile Court. Saturday, March 31, 2012 9 AM – 1 PM (lunch provided) Rhema Christian Center 2100 Agler Road Columbus, OH 43224 Nehemiah Action Meeting Monday, May 7th at 7 PM The Celeste Center (part of the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds) This is the highlight of the year for B.R.E.A.D. as the organization seeks maximum attendance and publicity for focusing upon the main objective for 2012, the creation of new jobs.
