Dear rick,I’ve enjoyed reading NW Dive News since

its inception, and Mike, of course has been a valuable contributor to many issues. However, in the latest edition, Mike makes a gross error where he states “The Puget Sound was first discovered by Captain Cook...” That’s not true. Cook actually sailed past the entrance to Juan de Fuca (Greek explorer in 1592 working for Spain) Strait during the night. As we all know now, that’s the avenue that an explorer must follow to reach Puget Sound from the Pacific. George Vancouver (1792) is credited with being the first European visitor, and, of course, his Lieutenant, Peter Puget, is he for whom our local water is named.

All of this probably isn’t particularly important (who cares, right?) except that I believe that every publication has a duty to present facts

correctly. NW Dive News credibility will be better served by doing just that.

Sincerely,Gene Coronetz

Dear Gene,You are absolutely correct and thank you for

setting us straight. Also, thanks for being such a loyal and longtime reader. As the years have passed the magazine has continued to improve over time. I am often amazed at just how far we have come. But our responsibility has not changed since our inception. We want to get the facts right, so I will keep constantly on guard while reading (even regular contributors like Mike Hughes) can goof a fact and misrepresent an important item

Thanks for helping us. Rick

‘Captain George Vancouver, RN (1757 - 1798)’ by William Bright Morris (1844 - 1912).

moNthLY ArtiCLes Letter to the editor

Welcome to the Dive expo shoW guiDe

Welcome! For those picking up the magazine at the show, this guide will help you get more out of your show experience.

But we know that not everyone got to attend this year, so hopefully this will be inspiration to join us next year. Which ever the situation, hopefully, you will enjoy this special edition of Northwest Dive News which also includes the Show Guide.

We are excited about this year’s show. The show has grown at an amazing pace over the years and this would not have been possible without the hard work of our staff. Kathy and I would like to thank our staff for all their hard work over the past year. For those who are not aware, a dive show like ours takes time to plan and coordinate. Everyone has worked extremely hard to make the Dive Expo a tremendously positive event for our vendors and attendees. Every “attaboy” that I receive, should and will, be passed on to them. A man is only as good as his support team and these guys make me look like a king!

Our show this year has evolved and grown and like a proud parent, I am pleased with the direction it has taken. Beginning from zero in 2008, and now 4 years later, we have grown quickly - we are now the fourth largest consumer dive show in the country. Amazingly, we accomplished this at a time when the general economy made it very difficult for any business to grow. I believe it’s been possible through the tremendous local support of our dive industry brothers, sisters and “buddies”. Our dive community is large and vibrant; this helps

as our show transitions from a regional show of some importance to a national show attracting a large and international audience. The ocean is the limit!

As the show’s producer, I am proud of all the new programs we accomplished this year. We added a “mini dive industry day” to help our local dive industry sharpen their skills and improve communication. It also helps the other exhibitors better connect regionally so the local dive shops can better understand and pass on their special offers as well as those from the variety of exhibitors they will meet during the show. We listened to feedback and changed to a more elegant Saturday Night Film Festival. This year’s Film Festival event will include a sit-down dinner and five speakers who will entertain you as they share their incredible experiences. We are in awe of their talent, and we hope you will be too.

We have also added a “water sports” element to the show. We want to entice the many crossover business opportunities that exist for the dive industry. Divers don’t just dive; we are adventurous water based people who want to have fun, on or in the water,

So get out there and check out all the cool stuff you can do at this year’s Dive & Travel Expo and be forewarned…..next year we are going to do it again with even more cool stuff!

Have fun at the show – it has been designed with you in mind!

Rick

dive LoCALLY - Where it reALLY mAtters

By: Randy Williams

The Marker Buoy Dive Club of Seattle, WA is celebrating 50 years of exploring the waters of our planet in 2011. In all these 50 years,

divers have enjoyed the fun and companionship of their fellow scuba fanatics found in this club.

What are we? Are we a group of divers that like to socialize? Or, are we folks who like to socialize and share our passion of diving? Yes, on both counts. Marker Buoy members have always found fun ways to share in our love of diving. We join together to share our divng adventures. We love to gather and have fun socially. It’s our annual banquet party that is really looked forward to by the members. We’ve had some pretty amazing themes inspire our banquets! This dive club has even produced two classic underwater adventure movies!

It is the members who drive the club. Members who want to dive all around the Puget Sound, British Columbia and the waters of the world. We just plain love to dive and enjoy our planet ocean. We try

to have great guest presentations at all of our monthly meetings. They are always interesting and sometimes provocative!

The Marker Buoys have seen some amazing things in our 50 years. We’ve seen the growth of diving technology...some good, some...um, not so. This club has been around from Sea Hunt to Cousteau and on to the digital world of photography and video.

We’ve been to places many divers only dream of. It’s been a great way to find new friends, exchange ideas and dive info. For some, they even find the perfect dive-buddy for life. Romance does spring eternal even here at the Marker Buoy Dive Club ( I can personally attest to that!).

It all started back in 1961 when John (Jack) Miller and his wife, Alma decided to spin off from his job at Boeing and start a dive shop in the Ballard area of Seattle. John was active in the Boeing Seahorses Dive Club. He and some friends felt it would be a good thing to start a new dive shop on the Puget Sound. The Marker Buoy dive shop was begun.

Of course, like any good dive shop, a dive club was needed to help it along. The first name of our club was the “Marker Boys” dive club. The current name was adopted in the mid-1970’s and it has been Marker Buoy Dive Club ever since. At the 50th anniversary of the Boeing Seahorses a few years ago, I was honored to meet Alma Miller. John had passed some years before. At the reception, Alma still proudly showed me her jacket with the original Marker Boy patch still sewn in place. I was very humbled to have met her. She was still on our mailing list for years and she told me how she still enjoyed receiving our newsletters. Sadly, she too passed from us just a year or so after the Boeing Seahorse celebration. She and John sure made it possible for their leagacy to go on in the diving community of Seattle.

Speaking of legacies! The world of dive travel would not be what it is today if it hadn’t been for Marker Buoy member (and past Prez), Bob Goddess and Tropical Adventures. Bob was one of the original divers to take travel and create it as a specialty for divers to find far-off adventures.

If you have a Dive Alert signaling horn on your BC, you can thank our own Marker Buoy member (and past Prez) Dave Hancock for it. Dave was a lowly engineer at the flying “B” when an incident happened up in the San Juans. A couple of club members somehow got a bit too far down current for the standard BC whistle to be effective. Dave got ‘em back on board his boat all safe and sound. While looking at a his freon boat horn, he had a flash of inspiration. The Dive Alert was born!

Jack Connick of Optical Ocean Sales is one of our long time members (and a past Prez too). Jack is a very accomplished underwater photographer and graphics artist. In that past few years, Jack has

become well known in the world of underwater photography equipment sales and knowledge. He too found a way to funnel his passion marine photography into a successful dive business.

If you’ve opened a National Geogrpahic publication and looked at some amazing underwater shots, chances are they are from old time club member, Stuart Westmoreland. I met Stuart in the mid 1980’s as he was working nights and spending his days diving and shooting

pictures. He worked really hard at perfecting his craft. It worked! He is one of the top “shooters” for NatGeo. Way to go Stuart!

In the world of dive medicine we have Dr. Ed Kay. We are proud of the fact that this well known hyperbaric physician to the University of WA, Divers Institute of Technology, NOAA and other fine diving institutions is a long time member and friend to many of us at the Marker Buoy Dive club.

There are many more folks in our membership who have gone on to make fine careers in the world of diving research, teaching, science, dive business owners, etc. All of them have been able to share those passions with this fun club.

Not to forget! It is all of the many wonderful, active scuba divers who are the back-bone of this dive club. These are your friends and fellow divers who want to share their excitement for the world of diving and all that goes with it. Come on! Get Wet! Join the Marker Buoys for another fifty years of underwater adventures!

Our webpage is www.markerbuoydiveclub.org. Our Facebook page is named: Marker Buoy Dive Club of Seattle, Wash. Please feel free to contact us. We’d love to have you dive with us. Dive Safe! ■

Tacoma may have just nearly missed becoming the gateway to the gold rush in Alaska over a hundred years ago, but it is certainly

the current gateway to scuba diving the southern Puget Sound. Out of four main marinas, and from docks along the Tacoma Narrows and Commencement Bay, dive charter boats head south under the Tacoma

Narrows Bridge to KVI Towers, Z’s Reef, and Sunrise Beach or all the way over to Budd Inlet to dive a sunken sail boat for that matter. Northward from the Tacoma marinas the possibilities are endless, but most often charter boats head out of here towards Blakely Rocks and beyond. It not just the dive sites that make diving in Tacoma so interesting, but what you see along the way as well. Under the

Sure, you’ll also see Orca whales, gray whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles, but for those of us from the northwest, these creatures are hard to spot, because we are used to seeing them all the time.

Southbound by boat I think my favorite dive is right in front of the KVI Radio Tower on Fox Island. You can dive shallow or past 100 ft. deep where a small boat rests. Large cement pillars extend down the bank like crisscrossing fingers and provide shelter for dozens of giant creatures. There are multiple octopus dens here. One only has to look for discarded clamshells and pieces of crab shells sequestered in front of cracks and crevices like welcome mats laid down in front of entrances to opulent octopus abodes. At this site, don’t be surprised to find the octopus sitting out in the open. It’s a good thing these 12-18 ft. long creatures are so docile. Large lingcod and plumose anemone also inhabit this artificial reef. There is no other dive site quite like it in the northwest. It is fun to go over and around the boulders and pilings just to see what creature lurks around the next corner or tucked away underneath the piled pillars

Sunrise Beach is where I made my first boat dive out of Tacoma over a decade ago. This reef/wall dive is only about 40-60 ft. deep and runs from north to south (west is shore), so it is an easy dive for a wide range of new to experienced divers. On my very first dive here we spotted four wolf eels that survived the onslaught of two overzealous paparazzi divers and still managed to greet the rest of the dive team. At the time there were lots of juvenile lingcods, as well as small rockfish, one 6 ft. long octopus, and tons of invertebrates including anemones, and nudibranchs.

Z’s Reef is a wall dive a lot like Sunrise Beach. What has made these small wall dive sites so great is that by making both areas protected marine preserves, the fish have had a chance to multiply in number, as well as grow in length. Which

do you dive in your backyard too? tell us: [email protected] tAComAmeans even on a bad day, these dive sites are great to dive, observe the life, and write about in your dive logbook. Rick Myers of Bandito Dive charters says he noticed a big difference in the amount of underwater life a mere six months after Z’s Reef became a protected area. Rick Myers has been chartering dives here for going on 15 years. I asked him what keeps him doing boat charters and he simply said, “It’s the life style. I enjoy what I do.” Going to either of these dive sites you’ll enjoy the diving experience too.

The ultimate boat dive site, when it comes to diving with currents and swift moving water, has to be right below the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The original bridge, built in 1940, lasted five months before the center section twisted, bulged, and then fell into the waters below during a high wind storm and became affectionately known as Galloping Gertie. The underwater remnants of the bridge are home to various sea creatures. I’ve seen octopus here around the anchor blocks at 60 ft. The deepest part of the ruins rest at 235 ft.

One of the exciting aspects of this site is doing a drift dive starting near the bridge. You can sail along at several knots on a good tidal exchange and before you know it, you and your buddy are quite a ways from your starting point. You may end up someplace north in a back eddy area complete with sandstone ledges, tons of shrimp and clams galore. It’s an awesome rush to fly so fast though the water and I recommend this experience to any advanced diver. The only problem with this site besides the currents, is determining how close the “most recent government rules” will let you enter the water near this area.

As for public access shore diving, Tacoma has some of the best. Titlow Beach has a good parking area, and artistic cement steps leading down to an advanced dive site. The site has creosote pilings slated to be removed when state funds are available. It also has gentle slopes and lots of cracks and crevices in the sandstone portion of the substrate where you may encounter crabs, clams, and octopus. This site should only be dove during slack tides.

Aaron Cummings, owner and manager of Tacoma Scuba, believes the best-advanced dive in Tacoma is at Day Island. This wall dive takes you down 90 to 110 ft. and boasts multiple wolf eel sightings among other indigenous creatures. Parking Diver’s can’t get enough of Tacoma! Photo by Tove Chatham

here is limited and one can only dive this site when the currents are just right.

For beginners and experienced divers alike, the most hassle free parking site and the easiest entrance into the water has to belong to Owens Beach. This is a sand and gravel beach that gently descends to depth. It’s a great place to practice your skills or look for small invertebrates. During a normal week you may only see a handful of divers enter the water here. During the Northwest Dive & Travel Expo and the Northwest Dive News treasure hunt, you may see a couple of hundred divers enter the water at this location.

All of what I have mentioned should make Tacoma eligible for the next issue of National Geographic. More importantly, for scuba divers, is that Tacoma is located right at the epicenter of some of the best boat and shore scuba diving sites in central Western Washington. Tacoma is less than 31 miles from Seattle, Olympia, Gig Harbor, Bremerton, Port Orchard, and islands such as Vashon and Fox. This gives Tacoma a wide web of wondrous dive sites all within short convenient distances beneath the ever-present gaze of currently the tallest volcano in North America, Mt. Rainier. Wayne and I seem to do a majority of our diving during the winter months for

several reasons; visibility is generally better and there is a minimum amount of particles in the water so backscatter is greatly reduced. Traveling during the winter also means less crowded ferries!

Recently we had the opportunity to revisit the Victoria, Sidney and Saanich Inlet areas for some diving with Rockfish Divers on one day and Ogden Point Dive Centre on the next!

We met Elly Pendleton, owner of Rockfish Divers, at the Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa Marina for a two-tank dive from her 30-foot aluminum boat. Normally Rockfish supplies tanks and weights, but since we had a vehicle we brought our own.

In the past I have always found Sannich Inlet to have calm water with little to no current felt underwater. Our first site near Senanus Island was no different. Wayne and I entered the clear, cool water and descended down the mooring line to the top of a wall at 80 feet. Instantly we began to see clusters of yellow cloud sponge clinging to the wall about thirty feet apart.

On this dive with my camera system I was happy to have my wide-angle lens because the sponges we saw here were much wider than others I have found in BC. The funnels

or tubes appeared longer and narrower in diameter.

For example; on the Sunshine Coast’s Agamemnon wall, the cloud sponges there have wide funnels and seem to be denser and taller in height. Both types however seem to attract juvenile rockfish which like to sit in the funnel openings and peer out at the divers. We have also seen small crabs, sculpins and blood stars on the sponges. Because of this dive’s depth (90-130 feet) our time was limited. In addition to the beautiful cloud sponges we were able to see small lingcod, nudibranchs, tunicates and huge shrimp everywhere on the rock surface.

For our second dive Elly took us to McCurdy Point, another wall yielding a w e s o m e u n d e r w a t e r visibility and breathtaking scenery across a steeply sloping rock wall. Looking at the wall while hovering in mid water made me feel like a climber checking out the side Photo by Barb Roy

Marine residents were not as dense at this location. Following Elly’s instructions, we located a curious wolf-eel den complete with a pair of wolf-eels. Only the male’s head poked out with the female behind him. We guessed she might be on eggs, as they never really came out very far. Wayne did coax the male out a foot or so however, and not with food!

Other critters at this site included nudibranchs, whelks (snails) laying eggs, giant sunflower sea stars, small sculpins and various species of rockfish. A close-up or wide-angle lens worked nicely at this site but be aware of the ‘swarms’ of tiny shrimp floating about like hovering clouds.

Elly has taken divers out on charters since 2006 when she first bought the business. If needed, rental gear and air fills are also available at Rockfish Divers as well as overnight packages with the

Being right next door to the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre was a bonus! The facility was completed in June of 2009 and houses 87 tons of seawater in 17 aquarium habitats. Critters represent marine life residing in the surrounding Salish Sea, including a wolf-eel and a giant Pacific octopus tending a mass of eggs no bigger than a grain of rice hanging by the dozens from her den ceiling on thin delicate strands. www.oceandiscovery.ca

NorthWest destiNAtioN british CoLumbiAAnother of Burt’s side activities is

building huge concrete reef balls to put down in the local area. These structures are rounded and full of holes to make it easy for life to grow on them. Several dozen are already in place at the Ogden Point site. Divers can find out more about reef balls at www.canadianreefstructors.com or www.reefballs.org.

As many of you know there are two wreck dives in the Sidney area; the GB Church and the retired HMCS Mackenzie, both placed as artificial reefs. The 175-foot freighter GB Church sits upright in 65-99 feet of water on the east side of Portland Island, scuttled in 1991.

During this time of year divers are likely to find lingcod or cabezon eggs on the decks of the GB Church and quite often octopuses under the hull on the bottom near the bow. I have always been fortunate to find several different types of nudibranchs on this wreck. A diver can easily swim the length of the ship and have time to check out the propeller.

The 366-foot Mackenzie was scuttled in 1995 and rests upright in 50-105 feet of water off Rum Island. On most dives here we have experienced strong currents, causing us to seek diving at slack times (when the water stops to change direction). As with the Nanaimo reefs of steel, the Mackenzie is full of critters, except these tend to thrive in current dependant areas.

Erin Bradley, owner of Ogden Point Dive Centre in Victoria met us Sunday morning at the Van Isle Marina in Sidney for a dive at Arbutus Island aboard their larger boat, the Cape Able. Ogden Point Dive Centre is a full service dive store located at the Ogden Point

Past dives at Race Rocks have produced fine macro and close-up images of colorful proliferating anemones (about the size of a quarter) covering entire stalks of kelp! The sea lions are also a special treat if they happen to be out.

Our dive at Arbutus Island in Saanich Inlet was delightful. Again Wayne and I descended down a mooring buoy line to a depth of around 30 feet. The sandstone features above water were similar underwater giving the small island a cratered look to the terrain.

A small octopus was spotted right away but playing it safe, it remained within the confines of its den. Just seeing a few sucker cups protruding from beneath the rock was enough to mesmerize the other divers long enough for Wayne and I to sneak away from the crowd.

We continued to swim around the island and watched how the marine life seemed to change before us. Small tunicates, sponges and anemones were plentiful in one area as were shrimp, nudibranchs and snails in another. Quite a few snail eggs and lacy nudibranch eggs hung from the rock surfaces like textured paintings in a new-art gallery.

Putting on a 50mm lens quickly proved to be a good choice because we found an assortment of nudibranchs, crabs, orange cup corals, tunicates, tiny rockfish and a very small Puget Sound king crab! These little crabs tend to seldom move so the challenge was trying to capture its true nature without moving it.

Overall the dive was e n j o y a b l e a n d w o r t h exploring more during a return trip. Both Erin and Elly said there were dozens of shore and boat sites

It is what we all should strive to do…give back. The Dive News

Network Foundation Ocean of Possibilities does just that and this year at the Dive & Travel Expo 2011 another member of the dive industry is stepping up to

make the foundation even more successful. Singlediver.com, a dive business that helps single divers find compatible dive buddies, is purchasing all of the shirts for the volunteers at this year’s Dive & Travel Expo as well as providing extras to sell during the show with the proceeds going to the foundation. Dive Expo Coordinator Rick Stratton is grateful to Kamala Shadduck,

owner of SingleDiver.com for her contribution.“When my wife Kathy and I set

up this foundation our dream was to help other divers and their families,” says Stratton. “There are children who want to dive but can’t afford it, women and men who have lost their spouses to dive accidents who need a hand up and programs that, in this unsure economic time, need our help to continue on

providing vital programs to our fellow members of the human race. In this time, at this moment, we all need each other. The foundation is the way we are trying to help and we are pleased that Kamala also wanted to help.”

Stratton says that the shirts, designed by artist Rogest and sponsored by SingleDiver.com, are a reflection of what can happen when there is a partnership between dive businesses. “We chose the name “Ocean of Possibilities” because we believe that there is, out there, an ocean of possibilities when it comes to helping others,” says Rick Stratton. “The fact that other dive industry leaders see those possibilities to help too just makes all the hard work worth it.”

the color of our oceAn dive & trAvel exPo connects with the Kids

Whether it’s inside or outside the lines, there is nothing

more precious than the world seen through the eyes…and crayons…of a child. The way our kids see the world comes out through their art and allows us to reconnect with that innocence inside ourselves that gets lost in the shuffle of every day adult life. This year the Dive & Travel Expo and the Ocean of Possibilities Foundation are making that connection with the many children who accompany their families to the Expo through the art work of artist Rogest and the world of crayons.

In this year’s Expo guide artist Ron Steven, aka Rogest, has developed coloring pages just for the kids. The pages are a collection of ocean inspired art that is just begging to be colored. Expo coordinator Rick Stratton says that the kids who attend the Expo are very important to him which is why he wanted to do something special for them. “These are our future divers but even more importantly these are the future stewards of our planet and the oceans we all love so much,” Stratton says. “If we are to expect these kids to care about our marine life, we need to help them make that connection now, while they are young and we need to make it fun so we don’t lose them to boredom. Rogest has created a way for our youngest visitors to express themselves and we want to see how they see the ocean parts of their world.”

There is one more exciting aspect to the coloring pages this year - completed pages will go into a contest and the winner will receive a complete set of snorkeling equipment - mask, fins and snorkel donated by IST. So kids…get those color crayons ready and show us what your ocean world looks like, you just might win the stuff you need to go explore even more! ■

local legendS award: gary kefflerOne of the spotlights during this

year’s 2011 Dive and Travel Expo will be the awarding of the Local Legend of Diving Award to be given to a local diver who has been a pioneer of scuba diving locally in the Pacific Northwest. This is the first time this award will be presented and this year’s local legend is Gary Keffler of Underwater Sports; he definitely meets the criteria for the award.

Pioneers are those people who came before, opening up the sport of diving in the early days, paving a way for others to follow later. They blazed a path, sometimes during difficult times, when diving was in its infancy. These people laid the foundation upon which many divers now stand. To win this prestigious award a diver has to have made a mark…left an impression…taken diving to new heights. Keffler has taken part in some of the PNW’s most amazing diving adventures including the caretaking of a killer whale called Namu in 1965.

Keffler was part of setting the tone for how to take care of captive killer whales.

“Here in the Pacific Northwest we are a tightknit dive community and we all owe a debt of gratitude to the divers, like Gary, who helped establish our sport over the last 50 years,” says Rick Stratton, coordinator of the Dive & Travel Expo and publisher of the Dive News Network.. “The Local Legends of Diving Award is our way of recognizing the folks who have helped bring us to this point. Gary, through his tireless efforts to further our understanding of marine life and what it means to be a diver is the standard for local legends. We owe him a lot.”

Keffler will be endowed with the very first Local Legends of Diving at this year’s Saturday Night Film Festival during the 2011 Dive and Travel Expo to be held at the Tacoma Convention Center on April 8-10. For more info on this year’s Dive and Travel Expo visit www.diveandtravelexpo.com ■

There are many people in the dive industry who give their 100 percent

but there are very few people who give 200 percent….Jim Trask is one of those people.

Jim works tirelessly to promote the dive industry on many fronts. In 2002 he co-created the Pacific Northwest Aquatic Association with fellow diver Wayne George with aims to sink a large vessel in Puget Sound. After doing a lot of research he realized it was an enormous task which would require taking smaller steps to achieve so he sat down and strategize the steps, what resulted was the beginnings of project after project to enhance the dive experience of all divers here in the Pacific Northwest. Seeing an opportunity to contribute in Tacoma, Jim took on the Stairs at Les Davis Park project. Jim dove in with both fins and before he knew it he was not only directing the movers and shakers but he had become one. He oversaw the project, permitting, funding and construction working with the City of Tacoma, Department of Natural Resources, Metro Parks. The stairs at Les Davis is where it all began.

In early 2005, WSA came to Jim

and announced that they were considering closing up shop. Because of Jim’s experience in the local dive industry, he knew that this would be a tragedy and Washington would loose a powerful advocate. Jim and the members of the PNWAA met with the WSA board and proposed a merging of the two….the new and improved WSA was born! Since that time Jim and WSA have helped sponsor many projects including the Titlow Underwater Park, the Saltwater Park artificial reef as well as the mooring buoys in Puget Sound and Hood Canal. He still hasn’t sunk that ship yet but if I know Jim, it’s just a matter of time.

Jim, who is retired Army First Sergeant, today splits his time between diving, WSA, his wife Karen who’s been putting up with him for over 40 years and his 2 kids and 3 grandkids. No one in the Pacific Northwest has worked harder at trying to make the sport of diving safer or more accessible than Jim. I am very proud to say that he is not only a fellow diver and a personal mentor for me but also my friend. Join me as we honor Jim Trask as Diver of the Year 2011. ■

The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) call to the diver seeking a natural playground. The amazing walls, the twists and turns of the

natural formations teeming with life, the vis that offer divers a look beyond what they are used to in other dive sites all enchant the diver

and leaves in its wake a desire to return as soon as possible. The TCI have remained a stunning natural diving and snorkeling haven. Miles of pristine and deserted beaches, unspoiled coral reefs and dramatic walls, this sun kissed archipelago sits on the horizon just waiting to be discovered by yet another diver.

A Passion for Paradise

The largest settlement is on the main island of Providenciales. Known as ‘Provo’ to divers from all over the world as well as tourists, this area is ripe for development. A recent boom in tourism development has changed this normally laid-back and unspoiled atmosphere into a modern day boom town yet

the locals continue to be as laid back as ever and, trust me, it’s catching. TCI still has 200 plus miles of unspoiled beaches. And just off shore lie the world’s third largest coral reef system, a virtual come and play calling card for anyone with a mask, tanks and fins.

TCI si ts in a semi-circular chain of eight islands dotted by smaller cays. West Caicos and Provo are to the west, followed by North and Middle Caicos. The islands of North and Middle Caicos can be reached by passenger ferry from Provo. East Caicos, which remains largely uninhabited, is a diver’s favorite while Salt Cay, and the capital, Cockburn Town are located on Grand Turk. All of these areas are easily accessible to divers and snorkelers and there are local dive shops and charters that specialize in trips throughout the area.

During our week-long live-aboard trip with Capitan Ken and his crew on the Turks and Caicos Explorer II, we visited some of TCI’s key dive sites. We began our trip along the northwest point of Provo, followed by several sites on the wall off the west coast of West Caicos and finished the trip at the tiny wildlife reserve of French

Cay. Both Explorer Ventures and Aggressor Dive companies maintain permanent mooring buoys at these top sites in an effort to minimize reef damage from anchors.

The visibility in the region rarely falls less than 100 ft. which only adds to the allure for both snorkelers and divers alike. The shallow reefs, though dramatically different, are equally as spectacular as the deeper vertical walls. Divers of all skill levels will find a place to dive in TCI. In the shallows you’ll find an abundance of large Nassau grouper, nurse sharks, damsel fish and hundreds of other species, all feeding or visiting one of the many cleaning stations located in the large coral heads.

Off the walls we were lucky enough to see an abundance of barracuda, reef sharks as well as some of the biggest elephant ear sponges and fan corals we’ve seen anywhere. On one particular dive we even spotted a hammerhead shark later followed by a couple of eagle rays. By far, the highlight was a lengthy visit from Jojo, the friendly resident bottle-nose dolphin and national treasure of the Islands.

Aside from idyllic seas and clear skies, the weather in this part of the Caribbean is a big draw and I have to say we were not disappointed. The average air temperature remains a comfortable 27° to 32° C (80° – 90° F) year-round with a winter water temperature of 23° to 26° C (74° – 78° F). We were told

TCI averages 350 days of sunshine each year, so whether you’re a serious diver, avid snorkeler or just looking for calm seas and miles of white sandy beaches all to yourself, you can’t go wrong here.

Although there has been a lot of development in recent years visitors will still discover the island life everyone seeks throughout the cays here in TCI. I found the locals to be friendly and helpful and the food was amazing. One truly finds themselves musing about living in TCI full-time. So if you are looking for that special out-of-the-way place to dive and relax, TCI might be where you should point your compass; trust me you will not be disappointed. ■

In today’s world of realizing that planet earth needs taking care of, a new funding resource is being developed in one of

diving’s best playgrounds, Turks & Caicos. The Turks & Caicos Reef Fund (TCRF) has been established to help preserve and protect the marine environment of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Don Stark, one of the founders of the TCRF and the organization’s chairman, believes that now is the time to take care of one of the places that has taken care of divers and tourist for so long. “I have been coming to the Turks & Caicos since 1993 and I have been impressed by the conservation efforts already in place here with the National Marine Parks system,” said Stark. “But rapid development on the islands is placing tremendous pressure on the marine environment. As one of the consistently highly rated dive destinations, snorkelers and scuba divers have a vested interest in seeing the reefs and related marine environments.” Stark also hopes that the development of the funding will also call attention to the plight of the reef system if not properly taken care of.

The TCRF will raise funds from the voluntary contributions of island visitors. In exchange for a voluntary contribution, visitors will receive either a wristband or a plastic dive tag that can be attached to their scuba gear, bag or suitcase to demonstrate their support for the TCRF. This fund is one of many all over the world that are now being developed to protect the ocean reefs. Palau and Fiji also have similar funds. “It is important that we, as divers, step up and support the efforts to protect the very places we enjoy diving,” says Dive News Publisher and veteran diver Rick Stratton. “I know I want to be able to dive the reefs for a long time and I want my kids to be able to enjoy them as well, the only way to make that happen is through efforts such as these.”

David Stone, the other founder and the Deputy Chairman of the TCRF adds that it is this type of attitude that he hopes will

We intend to facilitate marine environmental research efforts, educational programs, and conservation efforts with the funds we raise.”

The TCRF has begun to accept grant applications from individuals, groups and organizations for projects that will enhance the marine environment of the TCI. The TCRF has selected as its first project, in cooperation with the Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Environmental and Coastal Resources, the refurbishing and replacement, as needed, of the snorkel trail markers on the reef in front of the Coral Gardens Resort. The snorkel trail is an attraction that is well known and heavily utilized by visitors to the islands, but hurricanes, storms and algae growth has taken its toll over the past several years. Our goal will be to replace the markers and reef ball support stands and to regularly visit the site to perform cleaning and maintenance of the markers, reef ball stands and marker buoys for the benefit and enjoyment of all visitors. Diving California’s Channel Islands

ANdY LAmb’s [email protected] mYsterY Critter

During the many months leading up to the January 14, 2005

sinking of the Boeing 737 as an Artificial Reef, the team of volunteers had many tasks to perform. As the leader, instigator and “Mr. Everything” for the group, Peter Luckham was at the center of it all. One of the critical items on his list was the selection of a suitable site for the aircraft and its supporting structures. A final choice, based on numerous criteria was made -- near the town of Chemainus.

The level location selected was within 70ft (20m) of a small, low relief reef, situated just shoreward of the plane’s resting place to be. Dive surveys showed the reef’s depth to be between 30 and 70ft (9 and 20m). It featured a reasonable though unspectacular assortment of resident creatures that included two iconic Pacific Northwest “diver want-to-sees” – the giant Pacific octopus and the wolf-eel.

In the intervening years, Peter Luckham, as owner/operator (with wife Simone) of 49th Parallel Dive Charters, has frequently visited the several resident wolf-eels, often as part of guest experiences. These dependable fish are

readily found in several dens along the base of the reef, on the Boeing side. Most often visited is a pair of adults at the western end of the reef.

Fast forward to January, 2011. On a serendipitous visit to his “wolfie-friends”, Peter, sans camera, noticed a large, round ball of cream coloured eggs within the den. After several return visits with his camera, Peter was finally able to obtain the accompanying image.

Upon consultation with Dr. Jeff Marliave of the Vancouver Aquarium, Peter learned that these eggs should hatch in approximately 6 weeks. Jeff also mentioned that when the babies begin to hatch, the parents will “mouth the eggs”. This parental attention assists the young to break free of the eggs and particularly helps the ones escaping from the center of the egg mass. To date, this activity has only been observed in captive rearing situations and not in the wild. Peter is hoping to be present, with his camera, at the moment of truth to document the event. Jeff thinks this “birthing” will occur just before sub-sea dawn or first light underwater. ■

Scuba divers must maintain high-quality aerobic and cardiovascular fitness in order to meet the physical demands of the sport. Divers

may encounter unexpected conditions, such as strong currents, waves or surge, and they must be able to exert themselves sufficiently to compensate. Every diver should be able to meet any potential physical demands an open water environment could present in order to help ensure their safety in the water.

Maintaining a well-rounded exercise program helps to improve muscular strength, cardiovascular health and physical fitness. A workout routine should incorporate at least three 30 minute workout sessions each week. During this time, you should reach and maintain your target heart rate. To calculate your target heart you must first identify your maximum heart rate (220-your age); your target heart rate is 60 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate. To learn more about calculating your target heart rate, read the Dive Fitness column on AlertDiver.com. Your workout program should include strength, cardiovascular and flexibility training. fitness plAnning

Prior to initiating a workout regimen, it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor, particularly if it has been a while since you exercised regularly. In addition, schedule a physical. If you have any risk factors for cardiovascular disease (smoking, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, alcoholism, high cholesterol, obesity, high blood glucose), a cardiac stress test is probably a good idea. Your doctor can assess your current level of health and advise you on nutritional guidelines and resources to help you develop a workout plan. Discuss any medications you

are taking with your physician and any side effects or complications related to your medications. If you’d like a recommendation for a dive

physician in your area or if your physician would like a consultation, call the DAN Medical Information Line at +1-919-684-2948.

Planning your workout routine around your diving is also important. Generally, it is

recommended that divers avoid high-intensity workouts within 24 hours of diving. It is possible that intense physical activity within the 24-hour window may induce additional bubble formation and could lead to an increased risk of decompression sickness. If you choose to work out within a 24-hour period, select low-intensity exercises. It is also recommended that divers rest after diving as it helps the body recover and may assist in facilitating the elimination of inert gas. During your surface interval, take time to relax, recover and stay hydrated before packing up or switching your rig to a new tank. Benefits of physicAl fitness

Better physical fitness helps promote safer, more relaxed and enjoyable diving. A higher level of fitness can improve a diver’s ability to fight fatigue, so he is more prepared to meet the physical demands of the sport. Improved muscular strength helps make carrying equipment and climbing ladders easier. Flexibility training increases your range of motion, making it easier to reach equipment and helping reduce risk of injury. Improved physical fitness also helps to increase circulation, which may facilitate the release of nitrogen from your system after a dive. Stay fit to enhance your diving and your safety.. ■
