Volunteer Appreciation Week April 18th—24th , 2010

The third week of April is Volunteer Appreciation Week. The

Riverside County 4-H Program would not exist without the

generosity of volunteers. The time & expertise they lend each

week, month & year to this program is invaluable to the youth

of our county!

Let’s also keep in mind that our members, at times, are

volunteers as well. Their service & commitment to their

communities is a quality we should all appreciate.

Please take a moment this month to say “Thank You” to a

volunteer near you.

Here are some ways to say “thanks”:

A thank you card signed by the members of your club

An email note

An unexpected phone call

Make thank you certificates to hand out

A single flower from your garden (or florist) with a

small thank you note

Bake a batch of cookies or other treats

Organize a thank you presentation, skit or treat for

your next monthly community meeting

The possibilities are endless…Be Creative! Or for a

little extra help Google: Creative ways to say thank

you

Perris Panthers 4-H Club Report Reported By:

Nathan Bonde Perris Panthers 4-H Club Reporter

On February 24th the Perris Panthers Gardening Project went on a field trip to Don Zeider’s farm. He had many machines that he uses to plant, water and cut his crops. He said that he had fourteen different crops he could plant and uses 25,000 acres to farm on. This was a great experience! The Dog Project went to the park and practices obedience and agility. They practiced with other dogs to get our dog used to being around other dogs. At the Rabbit and Cavy Meeting we practiced knowledge bowl and made hay tubes as a treat for our animals. We talked about Nationals in Monterey, CA. The Poultry group wrote about our favorite chicken or turkey and did a report on it at the meeting. At the last horticulture meeting they did plant identification to see how much they know about the different kinds of plants. Our Horse and Goat Meeting met together this month. We had a veterinarian come and speak to us about how she got into veterinary work and what animals she treats. She also showed us her truck. For the Photography Meeting, they made photo storybooks. We took photos and then told a story putting in a book and writing a story.

In Service Learning, they learned about the Pacific Marine Mammal Rescue and some kids made donations for the team that saves sea lions. To get ready for presentation day, at our Communications Meeting we practiced interpretive reading, and our presentations. Our Outdoor Adventure project is working on the Aware Program and I went to winter camp. We went on hikes, did dirt sledding, and went on a scavenger hunt. At our Drama meeting, I practiced my cultural arts routine. I worked on modeling and paper work at the Sewing Meeting. Our Marine Biology and Outdoor Adventure Group went to the Temecula Dive Club Meeting on March 3rd 2010. It was at Pat and Oscar’s and we had dinner there. They have really good pizza, salads and pasta. There was a underwater videographer, Bill Wright, at the meeting that showed us some of his videos and camera. We also brought supplies for the Pacific Marine Mammal Center to use to save Seals and Sea lions. They still need more supplies so that they can help save more sea animals, which helps the ocean and the world. Here is their website if you want to help: http://www.pacificmmc.org/

Winter Camp Reported By:

Amanda Penicks Norco Mustangs 4-H Club

I attended my first winter camp this year and had a lot of fun. We hiked the entire time we were there, from sun up to sun down. Anyone over the age of thirteen we decided was old. We complained about all our aches and pains. Going to camp was worth it if nothing else for the bugs I caught! California sure has odd weather. We go to winter camp wearing double layers of clothing, wearing everything we can to stay warm. When we come home we are now changing into shorts because it is 8o degrees out. Go figure! Here are some pictures I took of camp.

Poultry News I hope your incubators are set and full of eggs. I know I have about 200 eggs in the incubators. Don’t forget you can candle the eggs at 10 days of incubation and remove those rotten or infertile eggs that are dark black or clear. Handle the eggs gently. Avoid excessive temperature change during candling and do not remove the eggs for more than 10 minutes.

Candling The development of the embryo can be observed by candling. Hold the egg up to a bright light and by looking on the large end of the egg in a darkened room you will be able to look inside the egg. “Candling” got its name from using a candle to look at the inside of the egg. Candling has three purposes. Candling will help you identify any cracks in the eggs. Eggs with cracks will not hatch. Candling will help you determine which eggs are fertile. Eggs that are not fertile will be clear. The eggs that are rotten are black inside. The eggs that are fertile will have blood vessels and a small formation of the chick. The third purpose of candling will allow you to see the growth and development of the embryo without breaking the egg.

Poultry Shows

None of our poultry members (that keep in touch with me) attended the Bakersfield Poultry Show held on March 6th. Seaside Feather Fanciers will be holding their annual Spring Fling on April 10th in Ventura. Entries must be postmarked by 3/29/10. E-mail entries are encouraged and can be sent to [email protected]. This is a nice show to attend with many youth activities. The show averages about 1,000 birds. They also have many birds for sale if you are interested in purchasing some new breeds or varieties or sell some of your birds. The Riverside County Small Animal Advisory poultry chair (Shannon Penicks) was able to secure the Norco Fair grounds for a show on April 24th beginning at 8 a.m. The poultry cages will be borrowed from the Southern California Fair the arrangements were made by Michelle Nachtmann. Please enter our first poultry show for the small animal advisory. There will also be a double youth cavy & rabbit show running at the same time. Entries are due on 4/17/10 with e-mail entries due on 4/21/10 to [email protected]. Inland Empire Poultry club will be having there spring poultry show on May 1, 2010. The show will be held at the home of Martha Delgado in Good Hope, CA. Send entry to: Jennifer Snyder 4391 Lone Trail Riverside, CA. 92509 (951) 685-8763 For More Information call: Behrooz Jahanbani (951) 681-9360 Diane Sage (951) 275-1599 Arthur/Daine Snyder (951) 685-8763

The San Bernardino County Fair in Victorville will be having a poultry show on May 14-15. Entry forms from clubs will be due on March 3rd, at 4:00 p.m. You may go on-line at www.sbcfair.com to find information and entry forms. All entry forms must be brought or sent as a club if you enter as a 4-H member.

Avian Bowl Report The avian bowl qualifier was held in Ventura, CA. on March 6, 2010. This event was conducted by Dr. Francine Bradley of U.C. Davis Extension, and required advance registration. The contest covers a broad range of knowledge of the science and poultry industry. All information was taken from the National Avian Bowl Manual. My team consisted of three members. Both Logan and Mackenzie were from Ventura Counties. And I acted as team captain from Riverside County. Our team placed second in the junior division. Again, there were 6-8 teams. Very tough competition. I new the answers but could not push that button fast enough. The senior team going to compete in Kentucky at the National Avian Bowl will be “H1N1” from Orange County. Even though my team has won several times as a junior team, juniors do not compete at Nationals.

The next Avian Bowl will be held in July during the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa. Teams can consist of 2, 3, or 4 members. Teams do not have to be from the same county.

I am looking for someone to team up with for the senior team. By the time Orange County Fair comes along I will have “aged out” to compete as a junior. Anyone 14 years or older interested in competing? Contact me: Amanda Penicks at: [email protected]

Riverside County Presentation Day Reported By:

Amanda Penicks Norco Mustangs 4-H Club

I attended County Presentation Day on March 20th.

I believe there were more Members there than last year or is it because we were so crowded? I have never liked getting in front of crowds and speaking but its good to do things that give you a challenge. You will find once its over it wasn’t as difficult as you thought it was going to be.

Push yourself to try new and difficult tasks. All of these things we are taught as 4-H members will help us later if life with job interviews, college, or what ever else we might do in life.

CONGRATULATIONS to all are 4-H members who took part in Presentation Day Saturday March 20, 2010. A special thank you to Pat Center our County Presentation Day Committee Chairperson. We had an attendance of 60 members, leaders, parents and siblings.

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TO ALL OUR PARTICIPANTS IN COUNTY PRESENTATION DAY!!

Ventura County 4-H Small Animal Science PDC’s Super Field Day

Reported By: Amanda Penicks

Norco Mustangs 4-H Club

Ventura County held a Multi-County Invitational with medalling events on Saturday, March 6, 2010. The event was held at the Ventura County Fair grounds. Featured activities and workshops included: Knowledge Bowls, Judging, Educational Posters and Live breed ID. Showmanship workshops were held for rabbits, cavies and poultry. The knowledge tests included anatomy, illnesses and husbandry. The educational displays explained care or species knowledge. Also, included was a Rally-0 for the dogs. Of course I entered all 15 contests. I started at 9 am and completed at 12 noon, the deadline. I believe I was the only competitor from Riverside County. I won medals for knowledge bowl contests in dog, rabbit, cavy, and poultry. I won a medal for the educational contest in dog. And won first place in live breed I.D. in rabbit, poultry and cavy. I also received 2nd place in the breed judging contests for poultry, rabbit, and cavy. And won 1st place in the general judging contest.

Even though I choose to do all the contests pushing my brain to the limit, I had a lot of fun. Through the years I have made a lot of friends from the Ventura area and have a lot of fun

with this friendly crowd. All of you should try to come next time.

SMILES ABOUND AT RIVERSIDE COUNTY FASHION REVUE

Submitted By: Lynda Anderson

Riverside County Fashion Revue Coordinator Riverside County’s first Fashion Revue in many years was held in conjunction with County Presentation Day on March 20, 2010. Nine participants, complete with smiles and style, modeled and answered questions regarding their outfit from a panel of three judges. Some outfits were sewn by the member; other outfits were purchased and coordinated by the member. All the entries wowed the judges and it was only after much discussion that the overall County Winners in each division were named. County Winners are as follows: Senior: Devon Bean, Vest Challenge Lauren Dischler, Traditional Intermediate: Ashly Anderson, Vest Challenge Jerusha Lumley, Traditional Ashly Anderson, Traditional Alternate Junior: Danielle Phillipi, Vest Challenge Nolan Bean, Vest Challenge Alternate Victoria Hickman, Traditional Nathan Bonde, Purchased Madison Platt, the only Primary member, took home a gold seal but, because of her age, is unable to continue on to Sectional competition. All County Winners can compete in both Sectional and State competition. Sectional Field Day is scheduled for May 15, 2010 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. State Field Day is scheduled for May 29, 2010 at UC Davis.

Woodcrest Pacers 4-H Club Lends Their Hands to Larger Service for the Humane Society

Submitted By: Stacy Frazee

Woodcrest Pacers 4-H Club

Every year, the Riverside Humane Society has an event called, "Walk With The Animals", at Fairmont Park in Riverside to raise money. Every year, the Woodcrest Pacers has a booth to spread the word about 4H. A lot of people came to our booth to enjoy our critters and learn more about what 4H is. This year, we had 2 mini horses, a goat, a few chicks, a few bunnies, and many dogs participate in the walk. There was also an animal talent contest in which a few 4H kids entered. We had a praying mini pony, a tame baby chick and a bunny on a leash. The kids all had a great time!

Earth Day April 22nd is Earth Day! Earth Day offers an excellent opportunity for 4-H members to give back to their communities by organizing a clean-up event, a recycling event, or other event to promote protecting the Earth . If you or your club are participating in an Earth Day event please let us know so we can share your work in next month’s newsletter. Pictures are GREAT too so we can see you in action!
