On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we hear of Jesus’ seventh and final sign in the Gospel of John: the Raising of Lazarus from the dead. The raising of Lazarus is paradoxical when we reflect on it. In this miracle, Jesus restores life to Lazarus, but while this miracle gives life to Lazarus, this miracle also takes Jesus’ life away and seals Jesus’ death, because from that day on Caiaphas, the Pharisees, and chief priests of the Sanhedrin planned to kill Him (John11: 45-54). The name Lazarus is very interesting. Lazarus comes from the Hebrew name, Eleazar, which means “God has helped” or “God is my help.” The raising of the dead is an impressive sign. However, raising the dead signaled more than just Jesus’ unique power. It pointed to the fulfillment of Jewish eschatological hopes. Ancient Jews linked the raising of the dead with the coming of the Messiah. The coming and appearance of the Messiah would be manifested by miracles, particularly the miracle of raising the dead to new life. Thus, the raising of Lazarus was a signal that Jesus was the long awaited and promised Messiah, who had finally come! For this reason, many people began to believe in Him.

To help us reflect on today’s reading from the Gospel of John, I have selected the painting Raising of Lazarus (1530) by Aertgen Cleasz van Leyden. In this painting, we see town of Bethany in background. Jesus stands in the center, with Martha and Mary standing on His left and right. Lazarus is seen coming up out of his tomb, dressed in white burial cloth. In this image, we can also see all the Jews who had come to Mary, seen what Jesus had done, and began to believe in him (John 11:45).

What struck me about this painting was the person kneeling in between Jesus and Lazarus. He is untying Lazarus’ hands. In the Gospel, we read, “the dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands. So Jesus said to them, “untie him and let him go.” Who is this kneeling figure? This kneeling person is an older man with white hair and a beard. Although the Gospel of John does not mention who unties Lazarus, van Leyden depicts this person to be St. Peter. The kneeling figure bears the traditional attributes of St. Peter. Why would van Leyden choose St. Peter? I think he chose St. Peter on purpose because St. Peter represents the Church. Christ, as God, has the power to perform miracles, and it is through the Church that Christ acts bestows God’s grace. Through the Sacraments, God gives us life and frees us from sin and death through the Church. St. Augustine teaches, “What’s the use of the Church? The Church, to which the Lord said, ‘What you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’” Look at Lazarus’ case. He came out, all tied up. He was already alive, but not yet walking around freely, being still entangled with bandages. So what does the church do? The Church does what the Lord told the disciples, of course; ‘Unbind him and let him go.’” Just as Jesus commanded that the burial cloths that were wrapped around Lazarus' hands, feet, and face be untied, so Christ continues to untie and free people through the Church, to uncover their true selves. Many times we are covered by sin. The cloths of sin tie us, bind us, and cover us. Through the Church, these cloths of sin can be untied, so that we can rediscover our true self, which is created in the image and likeness of God.

Please pray for all catechumens and people preparing to receive the Sacraments at Easter. May Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Rzekł do nich Jezus: Rozwiążcie go i pozwólcie mu chodzić!”. Chociaż Pismo nie mówi nam, kim jest ten starszy mężczyzna, van Leyden nadał mu tradycyjne atrybuty świętego Piotra. Moim zdaniem, artysta wybrał właśnie tego świętego, gdyż symbolizuje on cały Kościół. Wychodzi on z grobu żywy, lecz wciąż skrępowany. Kościół w tej sytuacji postępuje zgodnie z nakazem, jaki Chrystus dał uczniom: „Rozwiążcie go i pozwólcie mu chodzić!”. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
