Liturgical Roles for April 2013
From the Pastor’s Desk
Of odds and ends:
1) We are delighted to be using our new doors. The old ones were becoming more and more problematic, with
difficulties in even locking them at times. Our next project will be to have all the wood trim on the church repainted. We were also able to install a fence in front of the rectory, which will provide a bit of privacy and something of a court-
yard feel. These projects are only possible because of your ongoing generosity, for which we thank you. Even in small-
er matters like bulletin inserts, reflection booklets for Advent & Lent, prayer cards, flowers for Easter, etc., etc., we are able to purchase the things we use to deepen and celebrate our faith. When we were implementing the new edition of
our Roman Missal, we were able to provide pew cards and a variety of other resources, as well as brand new hymnals
and other musical needs. Many parishes find it necessary to do fundraisers to accomplish these goals. We do not.
Again, we are grateful. 2) Fascination seems to continue with our new Pope, Francis. We’ve provided this weekend a prayer card in
honor of him. I chose one with the Prayer of St. Francis on the back. One of the first things that our new pontiff was
able to choose was his name, and it is significant that he chose in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. It seems that the sim-plicity and humility which St. Francis brings to mind have long been a part of the ministry of our new pope. Add to this
a long-standing love of and concern for the poor, and the choice of names makes perfect sense. Individuals and the me-
dia have taken note of a number of gestures and actions that evidence a genuine humility and simplicity that speak to who Pope Francis really is. I think this is something that is going to continue to challenge us.
3) Speaking of the poor, I had the opportunity recently to attend a fund-raiser for our local Lafayette Catholic
Service Centers (LCSC). Once more I was struck by the variety and quality of the services provided through the differ-
ent outreach centers under this one umbrella. Also impressive is the quality of the people who staff the Centers, and their commitment to living the Gospel as they reach out to those in need. The Center is one of the local charities we
support as a parish. Each month, we take a percentage of our regular collections “off the top” which is then distributed
to LCSC, the Women’s Center, United Christian Outreach and Faith House. This is in addition to our Holyday collec-tions for the needy as well as individuals’ donations designated for the needy. Again, your generosity is at work in our
community.
4) That’s the end of the odds.
