Trinity had 15 of our alumni receive nominations for the Best and Brightest Awards. We are proud of our Trinity graduates now in their Senior year of High School. As we plan for the next school year, we always have to say “goodbye” to a few of our teachers and staff members. Mrs. Saxon and Mrs. Blythe are retiring. (more on this to come.) Mrs. DeLeo, Mr. O’Sullivan and Ms. Rozofsky have decided to investigate other opportunities besides full-time teaching. Mrs. Gowens, our loyal bookkeeper and an employee for 11½ years, is also leaving. We know God will lead them where He needs them. We wish them all the best and God bless! ~ Tommy Bridges DR. “A” HAS A BABY! Congratulations, Dr. Claudia Arakelian! She had her baby boy on Saturday - April 8, 2017. Jonathan Mauricio Arakelian was 6 pounds 15 ounces and 19 inches long. Dr. “A” will be out approximately a month. Coach Whittaker, who has taught Science in the past, will teach her classes. Mr. Gary Rady will help with P.E. and Homeroom duties. Our Eighth Graders are currently finishing up their pop art self-portraits! They looked at some portraits by Chuck Close, who famously uses a gridding technique to create his paintings. Mastering this technique has been a challenge but will be a useful art tool in their future. So, it's time for tests, field trips, awards ceremonies and graduations! Lots of fun things mixed in with some very important academic requirements. If your child is ill, please do not send them to school to attend these events. Tests CAN be made up. There will be more field trips than you can count in the years ahead. Every year, we have students in the clinic at mid-day, looking and feeling terrible. When I ask them why they are at school, the answer is often that they needed to take a test or they didn't want to miss a certain event. In the meantime, every child and teacher in the classroom has been exposed to whatever sickness your child may be experiencing. Please keep them at home until they are well! Regarding head lice, Trinity has a “no-nit” policy. This is true of all Leon County schools. Any child with head lice MUST be cleared through the clinic before returning to class. If your child has lice, PLEASE notify the school. More info is attached to this Newsletter. KIDS FOR JESUS (K4J)

On Wednesday, April 5th, our students were introduced to the Kids 4 Jesus (K4J) virtue of the month for April – FAITH. We will be looking for students who exhibit FAITH in Jesus and His Good News! Ask your child about the skit performed by our 8th Grade K4J captains. Help your child understand what it means to have FAITH in all aspects of their lives. Our Holy Hero for this month is St. Thomas. Each student was given a St. Thomas holy card. Together with your child, learn about what else St. Thomas is known for besides being “doubting Thomas”, and how his life and actions relate to our K4J theme of FAITH. Celebrating Easter“What is today about?” asked the Sunday school teacher to a group of preschoolers one Easter morning. “The Easter bunny brought eggs,” was the immediate and unequivocal reply. An unbiased observer, perhaps a visitor from another planet, might conclude that our Easter celebration is as much a festival of bunnies, eggs, candy, and new clothes as a celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.

We’re not suggesting that you should banish all of your Easter traditions, but read on for some suggestions on how to make Easter a more joyful and faith-filled experience for your whole family.

The Reason for the SeasonThe first step is to share the Easter story with your child. Even if your child knows the story, tell it again. We all pick up different insights over time.

There can be no resurrection without death, so the Easter story includes the Passion and death of Jesus. For younger children, be sensitive about discussing the violent details of Jesus’ death. You are the best judge of what your child is ready to understand. You can share more details when he or she is older.

Easter Sunday is our most joyful holiday and it starts a 50-day-long Easter season, when we hear what happened next each week in Mass. Read more about sharing the Easter story on the next page.

How to CelebrateEaster is a time for joy because of what God has done. It is also a time for serious reflection about what it means for us to be followers of Jesus and to participate in his ministry. His resurrection was, after all, God’s answer to the forces that opposed Jesus’ ministry. It was a sign

I d e a s f o r Bu s y Pa r en t s

that the ministry of healing, teaching and suffering on behalf of the poor and outcasts did not end on the cross. What does this say about how we might best celebrate Easter?

We don’t have to toss all the candy or ban the Easter Bunny—and we most definitely should still be celebrating—but we can be intentional about how we choose to do so. You might be concerned about how your child would react to making any changes to your tradition, but you might be surprised.

Try this: after telling your child what the Easter story is about, ask what they think would be good ways to celebrate that. Then have a family conversation to make some decisions together.

Easter Celebration IdeasHere are suggestions we have gathered from other families for how you might do things a little differently this year.

• Brainstorm ways to adapt your existing traditions or start new ones

to incorporate the real meaning of Easter. Add “Jesus Is Risen”

alongside “Happy Easter.” Search online for “Christian Easter crafts.”

• Explain the connections between the Easter message traditions you will continue. For example, eggs

and rabbits remind us of new life.

• Find ways to decorate that are less wasteful. Reuse decorations from year to year. Avoid plastic (who came up with the idea of plastic grass?!) as much as

you can. Less can be more in decorating.

• Do your research and be very thoughtful before buying baby animals

for Easter. The American Humane Society

Telling the Easter StoryThere are two sides to the Easter story: what physically happened, and what it means to us. Here are ideas for sharing both with your child.

StorytellingThe first side comes to us from the Gospels. If your child is old enough to understand the language, you can read it together. We recommend reading from chapter 20 of John and/or chapter 24 of Luke.

The adult language in the Bible can be difficult for younger children to understand, though. A good children’s story Bible could help here. Or you can read the passages yourself—perhaps a couple times—and then tell your child the story

in your own words. It’s easier than you might think. Be playful and have fun with it. Don’t just relate the facts, but draw your child into the rich emotions (they were sad, scared, surprised, happy!).

What It MeansYour child is likely to start asking questions (perhaps many starting with the famous “why?”). Don’t be intimidated. A good place to start is to ask your child what he or she thinks. You may be surprised at how much insight your child has!

Continue the conversation with them. If a question comes up that you don’t know how to answer, tell them it’s a great question and that you don’t know (you might choose

reports that the vast majority of the baby bunnies, chicks, and ducks given for Easter die within a few weeks.

• Don’t shop just for the sake of the sales or season. Shop for what you really need.

• Moderate the amount of candy you eat. Americans buy over 120 million pounds of Easter candy ($2.1 billion worth) each year. Make it a treat, not a binge. Your bodies will thank you. Some families stuff at least some of their plastic eggs with alternates to candy (erasers, mini crackers, coins, etc.).

• We strongly recommend having a special Easter feast as a family. Use it as an opportunity to connect well with family and/or friends. The food does not have to be super fancy, but try to do something differently. Get everyone involved in the preparation so no one has to do too much. Light candles. Begin with prayer. Enjoy each others’ company!

An Easter table blessingO Lord,

you are our light and salvation. You are the stronghold of our lives. The brightness of the resurrection of Christ has shattered the darkness of our world and made our faces glow with new life he has bestowed through the Holy Spirit. As we share these Easter gifts of food and drink, grant that we may dwell in your presence all the days of our lives and one day behold your beauty in heaven, where you live and reign as one God, forever and ever. Amen.

from These Thy Gifts: A Collection of Simple Meal Prayers by Mark G. Boyer.

to ask a parish staff member the next Sunday).

Key points to share with your child:

• Jesus rose to show us that even though people do bad things and sad things happen, God’s love over-comes them.

• Jesus’ resurrection means that we will also rise after we die someday, so we can be with Jesus and every-one who died before us.

• Jesus is still alive and we still en-counter him today (even though it can be hard to recognize him). Jesus left the Holy Spirit to be with us in a special way.

TRINITY CATHOLIC SCHOOL

13 April 2017 Dear Parents: As always, in the Spring, Trinity has had just a few cases of lice among our students. Lice can occur in any segment of the population, and are not an indication of lack of personal hygiene. To see if your child has been infected, check the scalp and hair behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. Look for whitish eggs, which can be mistaken for dandruff. Dandruff is removed easily; nits (eggs), however, are glued to the hairshaft and are very difficult to remove. If your child is infected, purchase an over-the-counter shampoo (eg. NIX) and treat according to directions. Wait 8 or more hours after NIX treatment is completed. Then loosen the nits from the hair shafts using a mixture of half vinegar and half warm water applied for 30 minutes under a towel wrap. Then remove the dead nits by backcombing with a fine-tooth comb or pull them out individually. So that you will not be inconvenienced, please be certain not to send your child to school with any nits on the head. Your child must be cleared through the Clinic before returning to school. Parents should check the heads of everyone living in the home. To lessen the chance of recurrence, please do the following: vacuum all carpeting in the home, soak combs and bushes for 1 hour in a solution containing some anti-lice shampoo, wash the child’s sheets, blankets, pillow cases and any clothes worn in the last 3 days in hot water (140 degrees kills lice and nits). Items that can’t be washed should be set aside in sealed plastic bags for 2 weeks. Anti-lice sprays or fumigation of the house are unnecessary.

The following are hints that may help in the prevention of head lice: *Spray across the back of the neck with Aqua Net or another “sticky” hairspray daily. *Keep girls hair braided or up in a ponytail. *After shampooing hair, spray on ½ alcohol, ½ white vinegar and let dry on the hair. *Emphasize to your children not to share combs, brushes, hair bows, hats and scarves. *Lice do not jump or fly. They do not survive off of a human host for more than 48 hours. *Prolonged head-to-head contact is the most common way for lice to spread. Please notify the school of any incidence of head lice. As stated above, children returning to school after an incidence of head lice must be checked by the clinic before returning to class. Thank you, Kierstan Greif, RN

NET MINISTRIES RETREAT Our 7th and 8th grade students had the privilege to attend a retreat on Wednesday, March 22nd. The National Evangelization Teams Ministries is under the ecclesiastical vigilance of the Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Every August, 175 young Catholics aged 18-28 leave behind their jobs, school, family and friends, to devote nine months to serving with the National Evangelization Teams (NET). The team pictured below served our students.

Front Row (L to R): Kyle Lange, Clare Wollschlager, Olivier Coutant, Jessica Beckman, Cole Jackson Back Row (L to R): Jose Gamez, Meredith Munro, Sam Wilder, Madelyn Jents, Elijah Richardson, Daisy Vanderputt

Our students experienced a retreat that allows groups separated into male groups and female groups. The young men explored authentic masculinity in response to Christ’s example of laying down His life for others. The young women explored authentic femininity through imitating Our Blessed Mother, Mary. We received positive feedback from the students and parents for days after the retreat. The small group sessions seemed to be the most meaningful to our students. Our prayer is that the seeds of faithfulness planted by the NET Ministries Team stay with our young men and women for years to come. We look forward to having our current 5th and 6th graders participating in a NET Ministries Retreat in 2019. Trinity Catholic School would like to thank the Howard and the Campbell families for graciously hosting the young women and men of NET Ministries. Our retreat would not have been possible without your generous hospitality. We will be seeking host families in 2019, so please consider opening up your home to 2 or 3 members of the team when asked. Here are samples of responses to the follow up question – Did you grow closer to God during this time? If so, how? “Yes, I am trusting in God more, and I give Him my burdens.” “I think I did because the kids around me just felt open, and the older guy made it sound so convincing.” “Yes, because the kids got to talk about the subject instead of the adults talking the whole time.” “Yes! During the small groups, we were so open to each other. It was rather revealing, yet wonderful, for once I got everything out and watched the drama (skit) about trusting God, I knew what to do. By the end of the retreat I felt so wonderful!” “Yes, I learned to ignore all the nasty things people say about women in the world and to focus on what God thinks of me.” “Yes, during the prayer time I actually thought about my life.”

Thank you, NET Ministries! See you in 2019!
