The PBA League Elias Cup finals aired Sunday on ESPN. The KingPins, the top qual- ifiers among eight teams that competed in five preliminary rounds earlier in the season in Detroit, put together a string of five strikes to take a 202- 181 lead after the first game of the two-game, total pinfall championship match. But the Motown Muscle, owned by former Pittsburgh Steelers star Jerome Bettis, rallied to tie the match after five frames of game two. In the Baker format con- test, where each of the five team member bowls two frames to complete a game, the tide turned when the two teams switched lanes after five frames. After struggling to strike on the right lane, the KingPins didn’t miss in their final five frames on the left lane. Consecutive strikes by Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C.; Jack Jurek of Lackawan- na, N.Y.; John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; Scott Norton of Mission Viejo, Ca- lif., and newly-crown Barba- sol PBA Tournament of Cham- pions winner Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., locked up the title for King’s team. After throwing the deci- sive strike in the 10th frame, Weber benched himself and brought in KingPins’ supple- mental draft pick Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., to finish off the match. The only woman in the PBA League field threw two more strikes to conclude the contest. “We knew the Muscle had to come back on the right lane after five frames and they hadn’t bowled on that lane in 10 frames,” Weber said. “We ate up some oil and they just didn’t make the adjustments. “My team is the best team. I knew from the start we were going to be hard to beat,” he added. “We started communi- cating in Detroit and I knew at that point we were going to be something special. “It’s an honor and a privi- lege to have Billie Jean King as our team owner,” Weber continued, “and it’s an honor and a privilege to give her the first Elias Cup trophy.” King, who admitted she doesn’t know a great deal about bowling, was an avid cheerleader for her team. “I was so calm playing tennis, but I was not so calm watching today,” she said. “I was dying. The match was so close. “I loved my team right from the start,” King added. “I Pictured (L-R) Tommy Jones, Jack Jurek, Pete Weber, Billie Jean King, John Szczerbinski, Scott Norton & Kelly Kulick. The day’s high lady was Anita Lorenzo with high game of 185 and 0641 4games series. Gor-man Low’s Mid City team led with 2003 the only 2000 team series of the day. MacMonagle’s league leading Orange County stretched its lead to 22 points with a 15.5 to 4.5 win over 4th place

California Bowling News is proud to bring you....

You can’t be more amazed than when you spend some time with today’s younger generations whether it is them displaying their flying fingers on computers, their flying feet in gymnastics or their rolling the ball and making parents and grandparent take a good second look at their talent, mentally and physically.

All sports and all fields have their child prodigies. There have been teenagers in every major sport, and many in their early teens, particularly in swimming and tennis.

Many of them have been great or gone on to greatness, at great sacrifice, being forced to grow up too quickly, being forced to choose between fame and fortune early, or after a suitable stretch of education.

In the dream world it would be wonderful if every young athlete in every sport was forced to obtain a high school education at a minimum, and college or other advanced training as a recommended path.

But the real world doesn’t work out so neatly. Some really young baseball, basketball, tennis and

hockey phenoms can and do make millions of dollars be-fore they can legally drink or vote. How and when do you tell them they are too young or too unprepared? At 17 they can be accepted into the Armed Services and put their lives on the line.

So how can you realistically ask any youngster talented way beyond their years to put a hold on opportunities and riches that may not be there later.

In many cases it is boys against men, and girls against women. But boys grow up fast these days and women aren’t nearly as mere as they used to be.

Bowlers are amazingly adept at early ages. You can visit any junior program and see obvious talent. But, at 15 many bowlers have been bowling for a decade, and bowl-ing at pro class calibre for years. By the time they are ready for college, many are ready for a shot at the pro tours or the big money tournaments.

Look at the Mark Roths, Johnny Petraglias and Pete Webers and a list of thousands and you ccould see super stars in the making at ages 17 or younger.

Junior bowlers can’t be reminded too often that a 200 game is fine, but an “A” in any subject is better. A tourna-ment win is terrific, but the Honor Roll is more terrific. A 300 game or even a 900 series is great, but a diploma is the greatest.

In bowling there is no reason why both areas cannot be encouraged. A high school or college student can utilize his time, so much can be spent on bowling and much can be spent on study. And students can map out a schedule that covers both sides, and gives them the best of both worlds.

Parents, bowling coaches and bowling officials have a duty to counsel young bowlers and not to put too much pressure on them in either way, except to use common sense.

Education should always come first, but bowling is an education too, if used wisely, whether you’re a shooting star or a struggler. But always hit the books as hard as you hit the pins.

Pete weber hopes To continue Winning Ways in PBA50 Tour

Season Opener Field of 120 players to compete in Pasco County Suncoast Open benefitting Wounded Warriors April 14-17 in New Port Richey, Fla.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – At age 50, PBA Hall of Famer Pete We-ber shows no signs of slowing down. The 37-time PBA Tour champion is coming off a two-tournament winning streak and now he takes his show to the season opener of the 2013 PBA50 Tour (formerly Senior Tour) season at the Pasco County Suncoast Open benefitting Wounded Warriors April 14-17 at Lane Glo Bowl in New Port Richey, Fla.

A little more than a week ago Weber won his second Tournament of Champions title, and his PBA League team, the New York City WTT KingPins presented by GEICO, owned by tennis legend Billie Jean King, won the inaugural PBA League Elias Cup. Beginning April 15, he will be among a field of approximately 120 players 50 years of age and older who will compete during the 11-tournament PBA50 Tour season.

“I have no thoughts about retiring,” said Weber, “Until I feel like I can’t win I’ll keep bowling. From a schedule standpoint, the regular tour is still the priority but I’m going into the senior tour with the same determination and that’s to win.”

Weber won the Tournament of Champions – PBA’s signature tournament – on March 31 in Indianapolis by defeating Jason Belmonte 224-179 in the title match. The victory made Weber the first player to complete the PBA Triple Crown for a second time tying bowling legend Earl Anthony for most major PBA titles with 10. He also became the tournament’s oldest champion at age 50.

In Sunday’s Elias Cup Finals seen on ESPN, his KingPins PBA League team, with teammates Tommy Jones, John Szczerbinski, Scott Norton, Jack Jurek and Kelly Kulick) defeated the Motown Muscle (Mike Fagan, Tom Smallwood, Ronnie Russell, Jesse Buss and DJ Archer) owned by foot-ball great Jerome Bettis, 440-407, to win the title.

Another player who competes on both of PBA tours is Hall of Famer and reigning PBA50 Se-nior Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla. Williams, the leader in career PBA Tour titles with 47, is competing in his fourth PBA50 Tour season.

During the 2012 PBA50 season the four-time Senior Tour titlist won two titles and had six top-five finishes in nine tournaments entered. Other Hall of Famers entered who gained fame on the regular PBA Tour and have extended their careers in senior competition include Johnny Petraglia, Mark Williams, Tom Baker, Amleto Monacelli, Dale Eagle, and Wayne Webb.

Another notable player scheduled to compete is two-time PBA50 Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska who has traveled the farthest to compete in New Port Richey – nearly 4,000 miles.

Throughout the 2013 PBA50 Tour season, players will be competing for the opportunity to ad-vance to the nationally-televised PBA50 Tour Finals which will be conducted as part of the World Series of Bowling V in Las Vegas in November. The top three players in points at the conclusion of the season will advance to the PBA50 Tour Finals.

Suncoast Open competition begins on Monday April 15 with qualifying rounds beginning at 8 a.m. Qualifying continues on April 16 after which the field will be cut to the top 40 to begin match play on April 17. Match play continues all day on the 17th with championship rounds to begin at 5:30 p.m. Practice and pro-ams will be conducted on Sunday April 14. Admission is $10 which is good for all three days of competition (April 15, 16 and 17).

The Lucas, Green & Magazine Pro-Am on April 14 gives area amateurs the opportunity to bowl with the pros. Squads are scheduled for 3 and 5:30 p.m. Entry fee is only $39 for adults and $19 for kids. There will also be a Corporate Charity Challenge which allows companies to help raise money for the WWP while a team of their employees bowl with the pros in a fun format. For ad-ditional information contact Lane Glo Bowl at (727) 376-1164.

The Wounded Warrior Project is possible because of the generous support of the law firm of Lucas, Green and Magazine. With offices in New Port Richey, Clearwater, and Spring Hill, Lucas, Green and Magazine is committed to aggressively advocating for its clients and continuously rein-vesting in its community.

PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame will provide start to finish coverage of the tourna-ment. For subscription and schedule information visit the pba.com homepage and click on the Xtra Frame logo. The Xtra Frame crew returns with an expanded 2013 schedule including PBA50 Tour and PBA Regional Tour events plus special event coverage.

Joining the Xtra Frame for spring and summer coverage is About.com’s bowling page content producer Jef Goodger, who has worked this season’s PBA Winter Swing, USBC Masters and PBA Tournament of Champions. Gianmarc Manzione joins the crew for PBA50 Tour stops in New Port Richey and The Villages, Fla. Manzione is currently working on a book about action bowling in the 1960s. His article “When Thugs and Hustlers Ruled Dark Alleys” was featured in the New York Times.

WEBER SETS TWO MORE RECORDS WITH TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS VICTORYOverlooked in the onslaught of records Pete Weber set in winning the Barbasol PBA Tourna-

ment of Champions at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis Sunday were the fact that he became the oldest player ever to win the TOC, at age 50 years, 221 days and he set a record for most years between TOC titles at 26.

The previous oldest TOC champion was the original – Joe Joseph – who won the inaugural Tournament of Champions in Indianapolis in 1962 at age 44. Weber won his first TOC title in 1987 in Akron, a stretch of 26 years before his second. The previous record between titles was 10 years between Mike Durbin’s first win in 1972 and his second in 1982. Durbin added a third TOC title in 1984.

As noted following his victory, Weber became the first player to complete the PBA Triple Crown (U.S. Open, Tournament of Champions and PBA World Championship) a second time. The only other player who is currently capable of matching that feat is Norm Duke, who has won the PBA World Championship three times, U.S. Open twice and TOC once. Walter Ray Williams Jr. has won the PBA World Championship and U.S. Open titles twice each, but has yet to win a TOC title.

WEST COVINA — West Covina Lanes was the host and the action was huge. 231 entrants had an exciting day of bowling. The cut scores were +79 for the men and +27 for the women, on a decent shot this week. The Super Seniors added to the board (two men and one woman) Javier Avila, Ed Palma, and Carla Sanchez, taking 55 bowlers to cash in the semi-finals.

The High qualifiers for the event were Romy Alkonga for the men with a +163 and for the women it was Veronica Boone with a +113. They will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event.

Each week our top seed draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth $1,810. Romy would draw the score and he drew a 488. We had no bowlers match that, so it will carry over to Foothill, and es-timated to be $3,000.

We saw Tim Tran be the last one standing for the shot at $3,000 in the 3-6-9 roll off. He was on his game and able to convert on the Five 9’s or better to take home the $3,000 pot. We will go for $800 at Foothill Lanes.

In our optional doubles, fin-ishing in first were the Moore tandem of Bryan Moore and Mike Moore (yes they are brothers) with a 1491 for $160. Second was Fred Galvan and

ABTA at Foothill Lanes 1 Day Event / Semi Frozen HandicapRomy Alkonga with a 1466 for $140. There was a total of $2,370 paid out in doubles and 38 paid spots with low to cash of 1382.

After the three game semi-finals, finishing in first was Jhun Tan with a +138, and a close second was Marvin Galsim Jr at a +124. Marvin will sit out the first round. Tan, had the honor of draw-ing the Match Game worth $5,000. Junh drew a 211 this week. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had six happy bowlers who shot that score, and they were Carlos Castillo, William Garrett, Don Quitangon, Sean Nguon, Joey Rodriguez, and Joevin Bola-nos. They will get $833 each. We will have $1,560 going to Foothill and will estimate the pot at $ 3,500.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Leny Urruita, Deboarah Abahazy, Jason Hand, Reny Alkonga, Ricardo Baca, Bryan Moore, and Greg Kokanour. Each got $105. In the second round, the four losers were Angela Lung, Jonathan Gon-zalez, Freddie Catamisan, and Marvin Galsim Jr with each getting checks of $115.

This would get us down to the final five bowlers. The weekly horses are paying a low of $51, Ed Abarca to a

high of $167 Joey Rodriguez. In match one, the tenth seed Wilson Chueng versus George Covarrubbias.

This was a good match that saw Wilson continue his win-ning streak to three matches as George was not able to find his shot in this.

Wilson would advance to the semi-final match. In the other match, it was Joey Ro-driguez the fifth seed versus Ed Abarca the seventh seed. This match was a lot closer, and it was Ed who would con-tinue his hot bowling, and ad-vance. Both George and Joey finished in fourth and fifth get-ting checks for $125 each.

Our semi-final match was set, pitting the thirteenth and fifteenth seeds from the semis. In the weekly “horses”, we would see Ed paying $51 and Wilson paying $60 if they would win their match. This was again another good match from both bowlers.

They would battle in this match, it was Wilson who jumped out to the early lead and in an up and down tough Match. Wilson would pull it out as held by one scant pin going to the 10th but Ed would leave the 4-7-10 split and all Wilson needed was 9 pins out to win the match, he left the 5-10 split on his first ball. He was able to pick up the 5 pin to advance in a thriller with a

137/184 to 151/183. Ed would take home $200 for his third place finish. For those lucky “investors” that had Wilson as a horse, he paid $60.:-))

The title game was on at West Covina. It would be top qualifier Jhun Tan vs fan fa-vorite Wilson Cheung. Jhun would start out with a strike, but Wilson would find the shot at the start with a spare and a strike. Jhun would open in the 2nd and strike in the third. Wilson came up and got a open to only lead by a calm 13, but a strike in the 4th would help and then get a double. Wilson got a strike in the fifth but a 4-6 split left the door open. Jhun would mark in both the fifth and sixth frames to jump out to a mere one-pin lead.

An open in the seventh by Wilson and then spare left an opening. Jhun would strike and spare to be looking good at this time. Wilson would get a spare in the ninth but leave the two pin in the tenth and it was over. Jhun would fin-ish out his tenth frame to fin-ish with a 179/216 to 158/205 and take home his third ABTA Championship.

Jhun would take home $1,000 for the victory and an additional $1,700 for Cash and Carry to give him a total of $2,700. Wilson would take home $500 for his second place finish. Congrats to Jun a Very Nice Gentleman who is a stellar ABTA supporter. You bowled well and deserved this one, as did Wilson. He has two runner-up finishes both at West Covina. He will win one soon. watched them on ESPN; I even watched one match on a Jet Blue flight, but I could tell they worked together great. I was very happy to be here for the finals.

“I love it; it’s exactly what I believe in. If you watch a World Team Tennis match, you’ll see my philosophy on life: it’s men and women working together, because we’re in this world to-gether and we have to help each other.”

In the opening match of the finals, Terrell Owens watched his Dallas Strikers (Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore.; Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela; Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla.; Mike Machuga of Erie, Pa., and Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla.) strike on five of their final six shots to defeat actor Jesse Williams’ BROOKLYN STyLES (Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla.; Jason Sterner of McDonough, Ga.; Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektow-aga, N.Y.; Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., and Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.), 217-172.

Motown (DJ Archer of Friendswood, Texas; Jesse Buss of Belvidere, Ill.; Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich.; Ronnie Rus-sell of Indianapolis, and Mike Fagan of Dallas) then eliminated the Strikers, 216-190. Fagan threw three strikes in the 10th frame to force the Strikers’ Duke to throw two strikes in his 10th frame, but the PBA Hall of Famer left a 4-6-7 split on his first shot to give Motown the win.

The Elias Cup was named in honor of the PBA’s founder and long-time leader, Eddie Elias. Elias’ wife, Peggy, and daughter Annie Elias made the trophy presentation in Indianapolis. The winners shared a $75,000 team prize.

PBA League competition will resume during the 2013 PBA World Series of Bowling V at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas Oct. 25-Nov. 3.

The PBA Tour will return to action in the GEICO PBA Sum-mer Swing May 20-June 2 in a four-tournament event hosted by three Milwaukee area bowling centers: AMF West, AMF Wauke-sha and AMF Bowlero in suburban Wauwatosa, Wis. The finals of the Badger, Wolf, Bear and Milwaukee Open tournaments – along with a GEICO Summer King of the Swing special event – will be televised by CBS Sports Network.

is impressive, even more im-pressive is that Mark rolled his 1098 on two pairs of lanes.

His Wednesday night Scratch Challenge League bowls two games on one pair and then another two games on another pair of lanes. Mark used his Roto Grip Theory to register his big score at More-no Valley Bowl.

If anyone knows of a high-er four game series bowled within the Citrus Belt please provide me with the details. Email me at “[email protected]” under the subject line “High 4 Game Series”.

Mark asked me to thank Moreno Valley Bowl for host-ing the best scratch league in

dyer continued from page 1the Inland Empire. Mark said all bowlers are welcome. Are you up to the challenge? My thanks to WILL JUNE for keeping me posted on valley happenings and the BOWL-ING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt bowlers.

By the way, the last time I checked the USBC Record Book, the national record for the highest four game set is an 1198 rolled by TOM JOR-DAN of Union, New Jersey on March 7, 1989. That is a 299.5 average! Watch out Mr. Jor-dan, someone like my friend JIMMY SCHMITZER will bowl 1200 (300 - 300 - 300 - 300) someday.

DOWNEY — The fifth round format was designed to take the four round winners out of the mix. Those four teams will be scheduled against each other for double win points. The remaining 12 teams are matched according to wins this round.

TIFCO INDUSTRIES and A.B.T.A. have five wins each and off to a good start. Four teams have four wins—PRO APPROACH, HERZOG INSURANCE, LINDER INSURANCE and POWER HOUSE VIDEO GAMES. This last round is not a “video game!” You need to take a positive “approach” to “insure” a win! (Did I get them all in?)

More about teams later. Some cashers this week were new to the pay-out window. Anthony Barone’s 223 took the first side-pot. #2 pot was snagged by Jon Diso’s 235, and Sol Cericos sailed away with a “dollar a pin”. Jon Diso doubled-dipped, also winning the Financial Advisors Pot. 235 has been a money making number all season.

Thirteen bowlers raised their average this week, and the whole league sits at 192.52.

Paul Barraco bounced out the high series of 647. Sol Cericos scouted the pins for 638 and “The Winter Wonderman” Eric Snow packed in a 628.

Let’s give a shout to Art Jones for his 254 and Ramiro Garcia 246.Every few weeks I like to thank the sponsors for their support. 80% have

pledged their dollars for more than one season. Three companies have a 10 year record and one company has a 20 year run. The best sponsors for the best bowlers! We love ‘em.
