Cheating Guidelines
Cheating may be defined as, but not limited to, the following behaviors:
1. Copying something word-for-word from the internet or rephrasing information found on
the internet without citing it properly.
2. Copying another student’s work (homework, tests, projects, etc.)
3. Doing someone else’s homework.
4. Giving answers or receiving answers on any type of school work.
5. Taking credit for an assignment that is not your own (for example, erasing or changing
the name on the project, homework, etc.).
Consequences for cheating will be given to students who either provide and/or receive
answers. According to the Kyrene Family Handbook, consequences range from a student
conference to ISI depending on the severity of the infraction.
HOW TO USE YOUR APRENDE MIDDLE SCHOOL PLANNER
This planner will help you keep track of your daily assignments, projects, and events. It is your responsibility to use the planner. It can
help you become organized and responsible, resulting in good grades.
Every Monday at the beginning of each
class, you are required to write down
the entire week’s classwork and
homework. This will be checked for a
grade each Wednesday in Advisory.
Be sure to record the due dates
for the homework assignments
you receive, then check off
work as you complete it.
Each night review your planner at home. Check for:
1. Homework that’s due.
2. Notes you took in class that need to be revisited
and marked up for focused notetaking.
3. Tests you need to prepare for.
4. Long term projects to work on.
Complete the two weekly reflection
questions before Advisory every
Wednesday morning to be graded as
part of your weekly agenda check.
Costa’s Level of Questioning
• Level 1 (Lowest Level) requires one to GATHER information. The answer is concrete and
can be found in the text.
• Level 2 (Middle Level) requires one to PROCESS the information. The answer can be
inferred from the text.
• Level 3 (Highest Level) requires one to APPLY the information. The answer goes
beyond the text.

In the poem “Hate Poem” by Julie Sheehan, the poet uses many hyperboles. In it, she uses hyperboles to exaggerate how she hates someone. Every single line in the poem speaks to her hate. The poem builds and builds in her
exaggerated loathing of the other person. An example from the poem is, “Everything about me hates everything about
you” (2). This would mean that her hair hates the other’s hair and her eyes hate the other’s eyes. Secondly, hyperboles
help by giving the poet’s words more emotion to them. One of the most emotional statements is, “I dissect you cell by cell, so that I might hate each one individually and at leisure” (24). It is very extreme to think that someone would hate
someone’s cells since cells are tiny, microscopic parts within your body. The hyperbole basically made the sentence
explode with emotion. Also, hyperboles can make the reader feel more confident in what the poet says. You can tell the poet is very confident in what she says in “The whites of my target-eyes articulate hate. My wit practices it” (18). The
speaker sounds very confident and sure of herself. All in all, “Hate Poem” is a great example to shows the benefits of how
and why to use hyperboles in writing.

Holistic Rubric for the Mini-Q Essay: Scoring Range 4-1
The 4 essay:
• features an introductory paragraph that includes a restatement of the question, a definition of terms (where appropriate), a thesis, and a road map that introduces the analytical categories to be developed
• is clearly organized with body paragraphs arranged in the order of the Road Map
• contains a clear baby thesis for each body paragraph
• uses a reasonable number of the documents and includes document citation
• provides evidence from the documents that supports the claim of the baby thesis
• demonstrates analytical skills such as seeing close detail, synthesis, finding inconsistencies, questioning author bias, and making judgments
• provides an argument or warrant in each body paragraph that addresses the baby thesis
• concludes with a paragraph that clinches argument with a succinct summary and/or fresh wrinkle
• is well-written with few or no errors in sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization
The 3 essay:
• features an introductory paragraph that includes a restatement of the question, a definition of terms (where appropriate), a thesis, and a road map that introduces the analytical categories to be developed
• is clearly organized with body paragraphs arranged in the order of the Road Map
• contains clear baby sentences for each body paragraph
• incorporates a reasonable number of the documents but may not always include citation
• accurately interprets most but not all documents cited
• in most body paragraphs includes an argument that ties the evidence to the baby thesis
• concludes with a paragraph that restates thesis and may summarize argument
• is quite well-written but includes some errors in grammar and spelling
The I essay:
• is inadequate in addressing or identifying the question
• is often lacking a clear thesis, stated or implied
• has unclear organization. This may include no road map, or body paragraphs that do not follow in an order suggested by the Road Map
• makes reference to few documents. Citations are missing. Documents are often misunderstood.
• the warrant in each body paragraph is missing
• contains serious errors in sentence structure and mechanics
The 2 essay:
• addresses the question but lacks some focus
• has a functional introductory paragraph containing a stated or recognizable thesis and a Road Map
• has a recognizable organization with main ideas divided into paragraphs; body paragraphs may not be in the same order as the Road Map
• contains reference to several documents but there could easily be more
• contains some effort at document analysis
• often lacks a warrant; does not clearly explain how evidence answers the question
• has some sort of concluding paragraph. May be unnecessarily repetitive
• is generally written with complete sentences, but contains too many errors in verb tense, agreement, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization

CORE IDEAS Physical Science
▪ All matter in the Universe is made of very small particles.
▪ Objects can affect other objects at a distance. ▪ Changing the movement of an object requires a net
force to be acting on it. ▪ The total amount of energy in a closed system is
always the same but can be transferred from one energy store to another during an event.
Earth and Space Science
▪ The composition of the Earth and its atmosphere and the natural and human processes occurring within them shape the Earth’s surface and its climate.
▪ The Earth and our solar system are a very small part of one of many galaxies within the Universe.
Life Science
▪ Organisms are organized on a cellular basis and have a finite life span.
▪ Organisms require a supply of energy and materials for which they often depend on, or compete with, other organisms.
▪ Genetic information is passed down from one generation of organisms to another.
▪ The unity and diversity of organisms, living and extinct, is the result of evolution.
