What is an Apprenticeship?

It is a job with an accompanying skills development programme designed by employers in the sector.

It allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and personal skills, required for their immediate job and future career.

On completion of an Apprenticeship, the apprentice must be able to undertake the full range of duties, in the range of circumstances appropriate to the job, confidently and competently to the standard set by the industry.

Apprenticeships can be located anywhere. Whilst B&FC have a number of apprentices located within the local area, we also have some located in Coventry, Bridlington, and Grimsby.

An example of progression:

An apprentice secures employment, and starts out as a Team Leader, they undertake the L2 Apprenticeship programme in Team Leading. They gain promotion within the company, and are now managing a larger team, so progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship at L3 in Management. After successfully completing this Apprenticeship, other options available include:• Higher Apprenticeship In Management at L4 /L5• Higher Education routes such as a Foundation Degree in

Management or an undergraduate programme.

An example of progression:

An apprentice secures employment with an Accountancy Company, to initially complete a L2 Accountancy Apprenticeship.

Following completion, and successfully gaining the L2 Accountancy qualification, the Employer decides to make the apprentice a permanent member of staff.

Wanting to further progress, the L3 (Advanced) and L4(Higher) Accountancy are available via the Apprenticeship route.

On completion of the Level 4, options available include:• Foundation degree in Accountancy• Degree programmes in Accountancy and Finance• Chartered Accounting examinations CIMA / ACCA /CIFA

Case Study – Higher Apprenticeship• 40 year old lady - studied to HNC Level (4) in Business with Personnel Management• Currently in a job role where has been given greater responsibility.• Line Manager suggested Higher Apprenticeship route as an alternative to Higher Education.• Initial Thoughts – Apprenticeship is not for me• Once explained – felt excitement and apprehension• Qualification has enabled apprentice to – “I gain the knowledge and work experience that I valuably need for

progression to Management and my employer is able to utilise me within the company so we can improve our services where we may have previously been unable to do this due to experience and manpower”

• Apprentice has to date - learnt new skills that they can implement within their job which is a distinct advantage to their employer to have a member of their team with an extended skill set.

The Future:• Apprentice is currently enjoying their Higher Apprenticeship in Management and Leadership and has thrived using

their new found skills and knowledge within their work place. Their employer has also noticed these changes and is confident in their ability when being delegated extended tasks.

• Apprentice is currently enjoying developing their new found skills and knowledge and using these more and more within their current job role and as the Higher Apprenticeship continues they will be given further skills which will empower them to progress further within my current role.
