Hunting for old to combat the coldELIZABETH BEAN
Elizabeth’s coat needs a matching vintage hat – looking for options at Eclectic. ROB GREENAWAY
OPINION: This year I resolvednot to buy new clothing and, fivemonths later, I’m still on track.
But I’m still looking for a win-ter coat, and as the days getcolder, my search is getting moreintense. Luckily, my resolutionallows me to buy second-hand.Coincidentally, a well organisedclothes exchange called ‘SwapTil You Drop’ was recently heldat Founders Park. I joined hun-dreds of other Nelsonfashionistas and went home withsome summer tops and a ‘new’woollen coat.
I was attracted to the coat byits vintage style, and was amazedto find, after looking at the label, that it truly is vintage. I reckon itwas made in the mid-1960s –about the same time as me. Thecoat is well worn – as am I – but Iknew that a little bit of TLCwould bring it back to life. Iloved the coat’s cut and that itwas wool and fully lined, meanslots of warmth.
Fortunately, I can sew – albeitrather basically. Even more for-tunate for me is the forthcomingvisit from my Aunt who is a fan-tastic seamstress and who willbe able to sort out any mistakes Imake. I have addressed thelining that was coming undonewith needle and thread, and thesleeves, which were a bit short,by adding luxurious new cuffs(did people have shorter arms inthe 1960s?).
Being able to mend – or alter –clothing gives them a new lease
of life. If you don’t sew then thereare places to learn. Waimea Col-lege offers a six or eight-week‘Sewing with Confidence’ course
each term. These are popularand fill up fast, so if you areinspired phone them on 544 6099.If you’re after a quick tutorial,
the internet provides videos onhow to sew on a button, alter ahem, take in (or out) a garmentwaist and how to darn.
If you would rather pay some-one else to do the sewing thereare many local options. I haveoften used Nelson TailorsMenswear on Trafalgar Streetfor alterations or more complexrestyling work. While there, Ihave even heard people ask forbuttons to be sewn on.
As an aside, I understand thatwhile at University my cousinused to do minor repairs onclothing in return for chocolate. For more major repairs she tookthem to the aforementionedAunt.
To find out who provides pro-fessional alternations, type ‘Nel-son Tasman sewing alterations’into your internet browser. Orask a friend for a recommen-dation. Professional alterationsare usually cheaper thanthrowing away an item and buy-ing a new replacement. Plus, you’re helping the environment– it’s a win-win for your ward-robe and our world!
Finally, a little know-how inthe care department can makeall the difference when it comesto keeping clothes looking great.Pay attention to washinginstructions. I know Kiwis hateinstructions, but reading the rel-evant tag on your clothes willhelp ensure that they stay ingreat shape. Correct washingalso ensures that whites staywhite and dark garments staylooking sharp.
I wonder if a bit more caringand repairing could help me tobecome similarly sharp, or evenvintage chic.
