Page 7: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Beginning Your Research: Should you go to Graduate School?

• Why do You want to go to graduate school? Is it for the right reasons?

• What are your career goals? Will graduate school assist you in meeting your career goals?

• What will you specialize in? What are your interests?

• Do you have the motivation for another two to seven years of school?

• Do you have the academic and personal qualities to succeed?

Page 8: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Beginning Your Research: Should you go to Graduate School?

The Undergraduate

• Student

• Breadth over depth

• Recipient of Knowledge

• Externally directed

The Graduate

• From apprentice to expert

• Depth over breadth

• Analyzer and creator of knowledge

• Self-directed

Page 9: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Beginning Your Research: Should you go to Graduate School?

The primary purposes of research-oriented, thesis-based Master’s programs (e.g., MA & MSc) are:

• To understand thoroughly and think critically about what is known in a particular academic field

• To learn how to conduct research in that field (and perhaps prepare for PhD study)

• To begin affiliating with the academic community of the field

Page 10: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Beginning Your Research: Should you go to Graduate School?

The primary purposes of professional Masters programs (e.g., MEd, MArch, MEng) are:

• To understand thoroughly and think critically about what is known in a particular professional field

• To master skills (including research/ experimentation) that are necessary for advanced practice in a particular professional field

• To enhance affiliation with the professional community of the field

Page 11: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Graduate School!

“To go, or ,not to go?

That is (not) the Question (here).”

As Hamlet would say:

Page 12: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Researching Your Options: Is this graduate program right for you?

• You want a school with a good reputation. • You should ask others in your field, especially

those in charge of hiring, which programs they respect the most.

• Talk to other graduate students at various stages of their programs.

• You must look for the school that is the best fitfor you in terms of faculty and curriculum.

• In addition to quality, you must look at cost and location.

Page 13: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: The Process

• Who is involved?

• What goes into an application file?

• What counts most in an admissions decision?

• How long will this take?

• When is a good time to apply?

Page 14: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: Who Is Involved?

Your proposed program is going to evaluate your application, looking for (but not limited to):

• background preparation in the field of study• academic ability/research ability (published papers

etc.)• relevant experience (for professional programs), etc.

The graduate school office will evaluate your application on a slightly different basis.

• possession of the prerequisite degree• grade point average, • test scores, etc.

Page 15: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: What Goes Into an Application File?

An application file usually consists of the following items:

• An application form. • A Statement of Intent / Purpose for Graduate Study• Official transcripts• Letters of Recommendation• Additional items, such as:

– Courses-in-progress/Projected Coursework (if you are working on a degree at the time you apply).

– Samples of your research/published work – Test scores

Page 16: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: Letters of Recommendation

• Usually two or three letters of recommendation are required.

• Some letters need to come from your instructors (professors), but others can come from employers, research advisors, and so on.

• Think about whether the letter will be relevant.• Talk to the person about the nature of the letter.

Supply him/her with an up-to-date resume, transcript and your statement of purpose.

• Ask the person to write a personal recommendation letter.

Page 17: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: Personal statement

• Should be a persuasive statement – marketyourself.

• Keep it short -about one – two pages.• Make it relevant:

– Why you want to attend graduate school?– What you hope to accomplish?– How you plan to accomplish it?– What you plan to pursue after graduate studies?

• Emphasize any research experience.• Emphasize qualities that make you unique and

desirable.• Briefly explain any embarrassing grades.• Type it, get it read by friends & peers, check for

mistakes, sign it.

Page 18: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: Testing Info

• GRE.• Ensure you take the time to adequately prepare.• Make sure that you sit the exam in time for the school

to receive the marks when applying, marks older than 2 years may not be accepted.

• Find out how much weight the school places on these exams; and, whether or not the average multiple test scores or file the highest (or lowest) score if you are considering retaking the exam.

• International students may be required to take language assessment exams such as the TOEFL.

Page 19: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

What Counts Most in an Admissions Decision?

• The standards used by a particular program in evaluating applicants for admission will vary from program to program, and may vary from the general graduate school standards.

• Another major factor will be the level of competitionin the admissions process.

• Because graduate study is highly specialized, it is the program that usually sets the standards on the background preparation required of applicants.

• You should ask (or find out!) at the schools you are considering what their criteria are, and what weight each criterion carries in their evaluation.

Page 20: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Your Application: How Long Will This Take?

• Send in the application well ahead of any deadlines (good manners!). The deadlines are usually in Jan. or Feb or Fall Semester.

• Notification will probably occur during in 2 or 3 or 4 months time, the better ones get sooner.

Page 21: Applying - Ms Progs in Foreign Unis & Scholarships

Funding Your Graduate Study

• Teaching/Research Assistantships • Provincial and Federal Funding

(OGS,SSHRC, NSERC in Canada)• University sources of funding• Learn what awards are common to

your field • Borrow wisely (if at all. Perhaps the last

option!)
