Student notes

This topic area is sensitive. There are many issues, responses and strategies to look at and demonstrate. The Role Play is an important activity as it provides the opportunity to look at all of the Performance Criteria for this topic, however teachers may incorporate other exercises.

Topic 1: Identify the impact of prejudice/racism/discrimination upon and amongst Aboriginal people.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?You will understand how to recognise and deal with racism on a personal level and be aware of how to deal with racism in the broader community i.e. work, TAFE, school, supermarket, down town, etc. You will appreciate how this effects Aboriginal peoples, and become aware of the reasoning of why and how to respond to these behaviours.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE 1. Identify the impact of prejudice/racism/discrimination upon and amongst Aboriginal people.

2. Apply personal strategies to address racist behaviour.

3. Examine strategies to facilitate equitable participation of Aboriginal people in a range of environments.

Worksheet 1.1:Experiences of racism

Note:

It is important to remember the impact that racism has on people and be aware that this discussion may become emotional at times. It is also important to remember that this is a learning environment and that this discussion is for the purpose of developing understanding. Care should be taken to keep the discussion on track. Where you discuss examples of injustice examine what can be learnt from the situation to establish better outcomes in the future.

Note and discuss your personal experience of: • Prejudice • Racism• Discrimination. Are these different? Provide examples. If you feel it is too difficult to talk about your personal experiences you may wish to research the experiences of other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

As this will be a starting point for this unit, it is important that all students are not only present but also participate in the discussion. Prepare a mind map (on the next page) to record your notes related to the issues discussed and the key elements which indicate the differences and similarities between, prejudice, racism and/or discrimination.
