  • AAR OIL PALM BREEDING PROGRAMMEAAR’s oil palm breeding programme has its origin dating back more than 40 years. Since the beginning, AAR planting materials have always been known for their Dumpy characteristic which was derived from the well-known E206 sub-population. Between 1986 and 2003, AAR produced AA DxP planting materials from selected Deli Dura x Dumpy AVROS Pisifera. Through the years, further breeding, selections and improvements made on AAR’s breeding programme resulted in the creation of the AA Hybrida IS.

AA Hybrida IS, oil palm hybrid semi-clonal seeds, is produced through a pedigree of selected elite clonal Deli Dura and the Dumpy Yangambi AVROS pisifera. This pisifera is the combination of the highly successful and renowned dumpy characteristic of AAR’s previous hybrid (the Dumpy AVROS) with the high bunch number characteristic of the Yangambi AVROS. The end result is an oil palm variety with 22% more oil yield.

  • WHY SEMI-CLONAL SEEDS?Oil palm breeding in AAR emphasizes strongly on DxP testing. Through DxP testing, the top families are identified. The bottleneck towards bulk production of specific DxP families is the insufficiency of maternal palms. The paternal palms on the other hand are not the limiting factor because one male inflorescence bears millions of pollen grains. Through cloning technology, the exact copies of the maternal palm can be created. Having multiple copies of the same maternal palm allow the reproduction of superior DxP families in large quantity for faster commercial exploitation.

STRONG EMPHASIS ON THE SEED QUALITYOur high quality seeds are the results of stringent procedures and supervision by dedicated staff. Emphasis on the quality control begins right from the seed garden where every step is incorporated with quality control measures. Good quality control in every aspect of the seed production process combining with advanced security measures such as laser engraved seeds and CCTV monitoring goes to ensuring the legitimacy of our seeds and enhancing customer confidence.

  • BREEDING PROGRAM WITH MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACHAAR oil palm breeding program is well structured and integrated with tissue culture and biotechnology for higher genetic improvement. Cloning the best individuals by tissue culture technique within a heterogenous and heterozygous family permits a quick fix and early exploitation of a superior genotype. Biotechnology approach such as DNA technology for marker based selection is also used to shorten the lengthy breeding cycle of the oil palm.

BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE1) Long stalk Eases harvesting with greater scope for mechanization as well as allowing for well-formed and better pollinated bunches.

    2) Big fruit Allows more space for mesocarp development and bigger kernel, including the inner fruits and hence higher and stable oil yield.

    3) Oil quality (OxG and GxG) Produces higher carotene, unsaturated fats and vitamin E contents.

    4) Compact palm (Nigerian population) Increases planting density for higher oil yield per hectare.

    5) Ganoderma tolerance palm Reduces palm losses and help to sustain yields.
