Welcome to the Diocese of Southwark
From the world class entertainment centre on the South Bank to the vibrant,
multicultural communities and bustling markets of Brixton or the Royal Parks,
open spaces, historic houses and theatres of Richmond upon Thames, the Diocese of
Southwark has something for everyone.
The Diocese covers a wide geographical area with a diverse population. It stretches
from Greenwich in the east, to Kingston in the west; its northern boundary is the River
Thames and it extends into Surrey, south of the M25. Our schools range from small
infant schools in country villages to large primaries in the heart of the city.
Whether you dream of working in a rural retreat or the lively inner city, the Diocese
has somewhere to match your aspirations.

Teaching in the Diocese
If you are considering starting your teaching career in a Church of England primary school,
we hope this booklet will answer your questions and give you an idea of the range of
schools within our Diocese. Although it is expected that teachers support our Christian
ethos, you do not have to be a member of the church to work here.
NQTs flourish in our schools and many eventually become school leaders. Teachers
appreciate the ethos of Church of England schools, where children of all faiths and no faith
are valued and where staff are part of a community in which every individual is special.
Here at the Diocese we nurture and support teachers at all levels to help them fulfil their
potential. If you are committed to the very best for every child within a Christian
framework, we hope you will decide to join us!
Working in a Church of England School - Your Questions Answered
Do C of E schools only employ Christian staff?
Church of England schools do not only employ Christian staff. The staff teams of Church
of England schools are diverse, with members drawn from all faiths and backgrounds.
This diversity is what helps make church schools as vibrant and stimulating as any other
school environment.
Schools with a designated Church of England character sometimes ask for Christian
commitment as one of the criteria used in making staff appointments, so that the
Christian character of the school may be effectively maintained.
What does this mean for Teachers in Church Schools?
1. Induction is the same as in community schools.
2. Teachers are required to participate in the RE and worship of the school.
3. Teachers are required to support the Church school ethos.
4. Teachers have access to support from the Diocesan Board as well as the Local Authority.
5. Teachers are employed by the governors and on a governors’ contract.

More about Church of England schools
How many Church of England schools are there?
The Church of England is a major provider of statutory education, the largest provider of schools in England.
Key Facts:
• Approximately 1 million children attend C of E Schools
• About 15 million people living today have attended a C of E School
• 25% (4500) of all primary and middle schools are C of E
• 220 (6%) secondary schools are C of E
• With more than 130 sponsored and 350 converter academies, the Church is the biggest provider in England.
• Over 500 independent schools declare themselves to be C of E
Church of England schools are established primarily for the communities in which they are located. They are inclusive and serve those who are of the Christian faith, those of other faiths and those with no faith.
Church schools are recognised for their distinctive Christian Ethos and the impact this has on standards and all round education. The proportion of Church schools regarded as ‘outstanding’ (by Ofsted) is much higher than the national norm and yet the Church schools are fully inclusive.
There are various kinds of Church of England school in partnership with local authorities (LAs):
Voluntary aided: the school is owned by the Church, a majority of the governors are appointed by the Church, the teachers are appointed and employed by the governing body, the cost of repairs and capital projects is raised by the governing body with 90% grant from the DfE, religious education and worship are distinctively Anglican, the governing body is the admissions authority;
Foundation: the foundation owns the school, the governing body employs the staff and is the admissions authority, the Church appoints a minority of governors, religious education follows an agreed syllabus and the worship is Anglican;
Academy: there are seven Church of England academies in the Diocese of Southwark. One of these is a primary school and the rest are secondary schools.
