Mobius’ CHO is a simple, robust and reliable frequency reference for consumer, storage and computation applications. CHO replaces crystals, crystal oscillators and PLL ICs to simplify system design, reduce start-up latency and failure rates. The devices are built in reliable, standard CMOS process, and assembled in low profile plastic packages to support thin designs. The single-die CMOS oscillator eliminates the need for external oscillator circuits, precision load capacitors and protective pads. The low jitter, low phase noise CHO architecture doesn’t rely on any mechanical resonators and generates a broad range of programmable frequencies from kHz to 100s of MHz.

Mobius’ CMOS Harmonic Oscillator (CHO™) Mobius Microsystems develops accurate frequency references on monolithic CMOS ICs. The company allows the electronics industry to finally move beyond quartz-based crystals, or other mechanical resonators, to explore the many benefits of integration made possible only with an all-CMOS solution. The company’s patented CHO technology removes the high frequency limitation of fundamental mode crystals, and accommodates the thinnest IC packaging available today. This integrated and space-saving design eliminates the common frequency drift problems of crystal load capacitors, and offers excellent shock and vibration immunity. CHO products are package programmable, and shorten the manufacturing cycle time of frequency references significantly.

Thinner and Higher Frequency Products With a product height of 0.55mm for the Chip-Scale (uCSP) package option, the devices using CHO technology conform to the most stringent form factor requirements of next generation USB flash drives and other thin-profile consumer electronics products. The CHO can generate a broad range of high frequencies which can be programmed at the package level electrically. The monolithic CMOS approach enables complete integration of the frequency generation function and makes the CHO an ideal solution for Multi-Chip Module (MCM) or System-in-Package (SiP) devices.

High Accuracy CMOS OscillatorMobius’ CHO is the first all-CMOS oscillator to achieve very low frequency drift over temperature, voltage and process variations. The technology is proven to meet the requirements of common interface standards such as USB HS and S-ATA Gen 1 & 2.

Excellent Phase NoiseThe foundation of our patented design is a high frequency, high precision, harmonic (LC) resonator circuit with excellent phase noise and jitter performance. At higher offset frequencies, which are the most critical for low jitter performance, the CHO can achieve up to 20dB lower phase noise than common PLLs.
