These signs are almost 12 metres from top to bottom reaching a maximum height of almost 23 metres on the building. They are internally illuminated. It is not clear from the illustrative material whether the existing stacked format sign is internally illuminated but it does not appear to be. There is in any case only one stacked format sign shown at present. These signs are completely inappropriate in such close proximity to St Mary Redcliffe Church. As a result of their height and the introduction of another stacked format sign, they will have a more harmful impact on St Mary Redcliffe, the Conservation Area, the street scene and possibly longer distance views than the present single sign.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society objects strongly to the two stacked format signs.

These signs are almost 12 metres from top to bottom reaching a

maximum height of almost 23 metres on the building. They are

internally illuminated. It is not clear from the illustrative material

whether the existing stacked format sign is internally illuminated but

it does not appear to be. There is in any case only one stacked

format sign shown at present. These signs are completely

inappropriate in such close proximity to St Mary Redcliffe Church. As

a result of their height and the introduction of another stacked format

sign, they will have a more harmful impact on St Mary Redcliffe, the

Conservation Area, the street scene and possibly longer distance

views than the present single sign.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society objects strongly to the proposed advertising

scheme because of its harmful impact on both elevations of this

Grade II Listed Building and the impact on the Conservation Area,

the character of which the proposals neither preserve nor enhance.

Corn Street is at the heart of the historic City and the Council, Bristol

Civic Society, local traders and others are engaged in initiatives to

improve and promote the area as an attractive destination for visitors

and residents. Advertising material of this magnitude and impact can

only cheapen the quality of this important area. In detail the Society

strongly objects to: Signs C and L because of their location in

fanlights and their illumination; Signs B and F because they are

internelly illuminated projecting signs; Sign A because of the

illumination of this ATM collar and the bright green backing panel;

Sign I, the internal window vynil because of its visual impact. The

Society has no objections to signs E, G, H, J and D.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society has no objections to signs F, G and I. However,

the Society objects to the other signs which have a harmful visual

impact on this high quality street scene set in a Conservation Area.

In detail, the Society's objections are as follows: Signs A an B

because internally illuminated letters are replacing non-illuminated

letters on these fascial signs; Signs D and E - the Society strongly

objects to these signs because they are internally illuminated and

projecting; Signs C1 and C2 - the Society strongly objects to these

bright green, internally illuminated, so-called heritage strips around

the windows. The strips would have a particularly devastating visual

impact, especially at night, which can be seen from photos of the

Bank's 47 Milsom Street, Bath branch which I will send in a seperate

email; Sign H - window vynil is not a traditional feature of shopfronts

in a predominantly georgian/victorian conservation area.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society does not object ot signs A, D1, D2, E and G but

objects strongly to the other proposed signs because of their harmful

impact on the amenity of this Conservation Area and the

appearance of this Grade II Listed Building. The Society's objections

are set out in detail below: Signs B and C because these projecting

signs are internally illuminated; Signs H1, H2 and H3 - The Society

considers that these bright green, internally illuminated so-called

heritage strips will have a particularly devastating visual impact

especially at night. I will attach photos to a seperate email of similar

signage at the Bank's 47 Milsom Street, Bath branch to illustrate

this; Sign F - window vinyl is not a traditional feature of Grade II

Listed Buildings or this Conservation. It is harmful to the character

and appearance of both.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society does not object to signs A, B, C, E, F and L but

objects strongly to the other proposed signage because of its

harmful visual impact on the character of this conservation area and

the appearance of this Grade II Listed Building. The Society's

objections are set out in detail below: Sign K - This internally

illuminated lightbox horse logo would be positioned in the middle of

the decorative caved stone feature above the main door where there

is no sign at present. This would be very damaging to this feature

and the appearance of the whole Listed Building; Signs J1 to J3 and

signs I1 to I13 - These internally illuminated, bright green, so-called

heritage strips around windows would have a particularly

devastating visual impact, especially at night, on the amenity of the

conservation area and the character of the Listed Building. Iwill

attach photos to a seperate email of similar signage at the Bank's 47

Milsom Street, Bath branch which illustrate this. Sign H - winow vinyl

is not a traditional feature of shops in conservations or Listed

Buildings; Sign D - This internally illuminated sign would be less

harmful if it were externally illuminated.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society objects to the proposed phone box replacement

as it considers the internally illuminated advertisements that would

be part of it would have a harmful impact on the amenity of this

Conservation Area and could be distracting to passing traffic. The

use of generic photos does not help assessment of this application.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society objects to the proposal. If pernitted, the

development would result in over intensive use of the site. There

would be little amenity space for occupants. The proposal would

neither preserve nor enhance the character of the conservation area

and, in the Society's view, the impact would be harmful to its overall

character.

Comments: Bristol Civic Society objects to the high level signage. There is no

need for such signage to facilitate finding buildings in the era of

mobile phones and satnavs. The impact would be harmful to the

character of the Conservation Area and the proposals for all the

signage should be carefully assessed for any harmful ompact on

views of the Cathedral and the SS Great Britain.

Comment Reasons:

Comment:Bristol Civic Society objects strongly to the proposed banners. They would have a

harmful impact on the Conservation Area and the street scene and, by virtue of the number of

banners proposed, greatly increase the street clutter. It is difficult to see what purpose such

banners would serve. The Civic Society endorses the comments of other objectors particularly the

Kingsdown Conservation Group and does not see the need to repeat the points well made in

those objections.
