Applicant Summer Project - Graphics Graphic Design is very much about using both sides of your brain, the left logical, analytical, problem-solving side and the right creative and imaginative side. As part of your design education you should aim to develop both the analytical/rational and creative sides. It’s very much about learning to think for your-self. TASK 1: VISUAL IDENTITY (ANALYTICAL): Find 2 logos you really like and 1 that you feel is dated and due for a redesign. e.g. an online business, a sports brand, TV company, clothes brand, music label etc. A logo is usually applied to other assets and products and become part of a company’s VISUAL IDENTITY. Before you design a logo you have to do the research as well as analyse other logos in order to understand the thinking behind the designs: There are five elements that can be seen in every iconic logo: It’s describable It’s memorable It’s effective without colour It’s scalable i.e. it works when just a couple of centimetres in size It’s appropriate Ask yourself some questions when you look at a logo in order to make analysis notes: • what is the company or organisation's business or activity? • can I describe the it in simple terms: the type style or/and symbol it uses, shape, form, colour etc • what is distinctive, memorable or clever about the logo (if anything at all)? and what feeling does it convey or connote? • does the design reflect the organisation's business in any way, even subtly? • do you think it works? Is it appropriate for the type of organisation it is? • is it distinguishable from other competitive organisations Having found your three logos write a concise analysis for the three logos based on the information provided. TASK 2: VISUAL IDENTITY (CREATIVE): 1. With the logo that you feel is dated or due for a re-design - come up with as many initial sketch ideas as you can for the logo or as an alternative, design any new logo of your choice. You can use a sharpened HB pencil but for better definition try working in file-line or a black biro pen. 2. Once you have a good selection of ideas take the best three ideas and develop these further, taking time to draw them out better.

At this stage you could start to explore colour but it isn’t necessary in the early design stage. Do discuss your ideas and get feedback from others. 3. Present three of the best ideas on one A3 page. If you have a computer and software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop you could have a go at visualising your favourite idea digitally.
