I think I’ve come up with one which fits perfectly. “Surprise, I got you again”! Here we were enjoying a few almost balmy days and impatiently awaiting spring flowers, robins and better weather. Well, the robins got here and some of the flowers are blooming, but what happened to warmer days? Fortunately I procrastinated and didn’t put away my sweaters and winter coats. Every year I look forward to Spring with great anticipation because I really don’t like cold weather and April has always been my favorite month. I’ve lived in Indiana for sixty years and should know by now that our weather is totally unpredictable and just because the calendar says spring is here doesn’t mean a whole lot. The only sure thing about Indiana weather is that it can change instantly and usually not for the better! I know it’s nearly a year away, but I’m getting really excited about our hosting the 2014 Gathering of Quilters. Anne has come up with a wonderful theme about quilters sharing our love through quilting. The venue is set and promises to be a great place for our show. We are going to showcase quilts just from our members, so start planning which quilts you would like to display or better yet, start making a new one to show. I’m also looking forward to showing some of the quilts I’ve made over the years at our May meeting. I feel honored that I was asked to do this and I hope you will all enjoy my growth in quilting. Congratulations to the six lucky April door prize winners: Kathy Bogert, Joan Olinghouse, Donna Sievers, Jeannie Shears, Gloria Hoevel, and Cheryl Unger. Thank you to all the generous people who donate our door prizes! Reminder: We will begin collecting annual guild dues next month for the 2013 – 2014 membership year. Dues remain $30.00. Membership Committee: Linda Johnson, Jane Wells, Lynne Bogardus

STRIP SWAP The Strip Swap is becoming more and more popular, so if you haven't taken advantage of this activity, why not give it a try? This month we will be trading batik strips of any color. Please make sure they are true batiks and not just a print. You will know that they are batik because they will be the same color front and back. 1 yard of fabric will cut into 14-2 1/2 inch strips. Put them in a baggie with your name on it to join in the fun! Happy swapping, Cindy Loos

MONTHLY MINI Due to the March snows, we had two great monthly minis at the April meeting. Carol Zanzinger's Harbinger of Spring, a lovely wall hanging of a potted flower was claimed by a delighted Mary Hill. Karon K. Sheehan continued the "spring theme" with a unique basket full of supplies for spring planting. (Seeds, gloves and a wind chime were part of the items in the basket.) One of our newest members, Jennifer Ryninger, was the lucky winner of Karon's "mini". Our May mini has been donated by Linda Mulpagano. It is a sampler-style piece, one that will look great on any wall or table. It is in BRIGHT primary colors of red, yellow, green, and blue. The following members have signed up for future minis: June - Linda Hampson; July - Debi Barham; August - Bobbi Richards; September - Judi Bruck; October - Janet Ditton; November - Ann Williams; December - Kathy Doran; and beginning 2014 in January - Marcia Brindel. If anyone has projects that are "looking for a home", please consider just bringing it in. We can always use back-ups or second items for each month. Jennifer and I would like to thank all the members who donated items for the monthly mini (and those who purchased tickets) for the past two years. Jennifer Steward and Sue Rohling

PHILANTHROPY

There will be a workshop at the Red Cross this coming Friday, April 26 to work on the quilt we are making for the air guard as the 2014 Philanthropy quilt. We will be in Conference Room C or D and someone will be at the entrance to direct you.

The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. and we have the room reserved for the whole day, so hopefully if we have enough volunteers, we can get most of the top completed. We will be making Log Cabin blocks from red, white and blue fabrics…a very easy block. Bring your sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, and other sewing supplies you normally take to a workshop. A couple of ironing stations will be provided but bring your own if you like. Please let me know if you can attend. Donna Sievers 493-9291 or [email protected] Donna

The Gathering, 2014 Great news: we now have a venue! The Gathering will take place on March 15, 2014, from 8 am to 4 pm, at Wayne High School, on Winchester Road in Fort Wayne, IN. The facility is wonderful: they have a large Commons area for our registration tables; there is a spacious auditorium for the Welcoming of the Guilds and the speaker’s lecture entitled “Will You Make Me a Quilt?”; lunch will take place in their large cafeteria; the vendors’ tables will be located in the main gym; quilts will be displayed in the smaller gym. The theme for 2014 is: “Sharing the Love through Quilting.” The core committee for our Gathering has decided to extend a challenge: interested Appleseed members can design a logo for use on the Goodie/ Shopping bags, the commemorative 2014 pin, the program booklet, and on flyers and signs. Any design submitted should incorporate both the 2014 theme and an apple (which is the symbol of our Guild.) If you would like to submit a design idea, email your sketch to: [email protected] All submissions must be received by the June Guild meeting, and the winning logo will be announced at the June Board meeting and in the subsequent newsletter. The design that is selected will be our official logo for the 2014 Gathering. The designer will get credit in the program booklet. The next meeting of the Gathering core committee will be at the Georgetown Library on Thursday, May 23 at 6:30 pm. Anne Tinkel

GETTING TO KNOW OUR FELLOW MEMBERS

Janet Ditton Advisor I am single and I have one sister with whom I share a close relationship. My family includes my mother, who is 98, my sister, and her two sons and their families. They all own at least one of my quilts. I have a degree is in elementary education from Purdue University in West Lafayette and a graduate degree in business administration from IPFW. I taught for five years but eventually ended up as an IT Specialist first at Lincoln Life and then for IBM supporting systems at Lincoln. I retired from IBM in 2010. In 1982 a co-worker talked me into taking a quilting class at the Nimble Thimble located on Wells street. The shop

owner taught the class and it was all hand-piecing techniques. I made a couple of pillows with blocks made in this workshop and then dropped quilting until about 1990 when I took several workshops at Lolly’s and started a bed quilt that is still not completed (someday!). I really became a dedicated quilter when I joined Susan Buschur, Sharon Edwards, and Karen Wolfgram in a small group called Four Patch. That was in 1997. Four Patch is now an official Appleseed Bee and Sue Rohling has joined us.

In 2006, I joined Appleseed. I have learned much from taking workshops offered by the Guild, but I credit all my quilting friends for helping me to improve my techniques. Sharing is one of the most important things that come from belonging to the Guild. If there is something I need help with I just ask and someone always has a solution and is willing to help. I have won several awards at the Appleseed Quilt Shows and I attribute some of these to advice that I received from other members.

One of my favorite techniques is fused raw edge machine appliqué using the buttonhole stitch. I’ve made a number of quilts using this technique. I am currently the Advisor on the Appleseed executive board. It’s a pretty easy position and is usually filled by the past president. It’s just what it says – advise.

Kathy Doran Bee keeper I live in Northeast Fort Wayne with my husband, Mike. We have one son and his wife—Patrick and Karen, and one grandson, Jack. They live in Wheaton, IL. I grew up near Anderson, IN and graduated from Ball State. I’ve lived in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, South Dakota and Michigan. I taught high school in Miami, FL for 6 years, and then stayed home with my son for six years, and then we moved to Fort Wayne where I ran an auto parts chain for 3 years before starting my 25-year Ivy Tech career. I was the Executive Director of Finance and Business Affairs. I loved that job until I retired a few years ago.

I started quilting around 2000. My mother has quilted for many years and was so worried I was never going to start, meaning she would have no one to take her stash when she was finished with it. At nearly 95, she is still working on it herself. I really enjoy selecting and collecting fabrics for a new project and then doing the piecing. I quilt my own quilts, but it’s not necessarily my favorite. As Beekeeper, it is my responsibility to plan and host a New Member Tea in order to acquaint new members with the Guild and in particular to explain our Bee opportunities. Once it has been determined there is interest in forming a new Bee, I facilitate that process. I also try to match members with existing Bees if there is an opening. The Beekeeper also maintains a record of all Bees and their members.

Linda Johnson Committee: Membership I married my husband, Gary, in 1974, and then moved from Fort Wayne to Monroeville, just a little southeast of Fort Wayne. It’s a nice little farming community with equal number of churches and bars. Some of the churches have quilting bees, but alas, they are hand-quilters, and I just can’t make my fingers do that! We’ve raised 5 great kids here, and now have 4 kids-in-law, 7 grandchildren and one little angel in heaven. Gary and I are currently “empty nesters”, but that status seems to change frequently. I guess I should take that as a compliment? I have always loved sewing and other crafts; but once I tried quilting, I was HOOKED! That was in 2001, and all other crafts were left in the dust. My passion for quilting has changed my life. Never

before have I ever felt so creative and enthusiastic. I quit my job at Lincoln Life in 2002 to become a full-time quilter. I am currently working on my third book of original quilt patterns with my sister Jane Wells. I also love teaching quilting to others and expanding my own techniques with each new creation. I have won several local quilt show ribbons for my original quilts, and have shown quilts at national shows through American Quilters’ Society. My “Leave Room In Your Garden For Fairies To Dance” quilt was a finalist in an AQS contest, and then hung in the Museum of American Quilters in 2007. AQS is also our publisher for our quilt books. Jane and I have also written a Mystery Quilt pattern for the American Quilters’ Magazine in 2010. But mostly, I just like stretching my creative side and trying new techniques. I am currently working on a 6-person group art quilt. Can’t wait to show it to my Appleseed Guild friends! I like the friendships, socializing, the “show and tell”, the classes, and the “Kids Quilts” that the guild offers. The membership committee tracks member and guest attendance, records membership dues, and updates the membership roster with new members. We greet you with a smile at the door and make sure everyone has their Appleseed nametag on. We also organize the annual membership directory and write membership articles for the newsletter. It’s a great job. I’ve entered quilts in two quilt shows; and have won a second place ribbon and an honorable mention.
