Ms. Cathy’s Weekly Newsletter Apples 3 September 22 th – September 25 th Next week, we will continue with learning activities about apples. We have been reading nonfiction books about apple and apple trees. The main book that we will focus on for next week will be the fiction book “Ten Apples Up On Top” by Dr. Seuss written as Theo LeSieg. The book is filled with silly rhymes and counting opportunities as three animals challenge each other to balance more apple on their heads. As an art/craft activity for next week, each child will make a page in our very own class book called “Apples Up On Top”. Each child will have their own page in the book and will choose how many apples to balance on top of their picture. Each child will need to work with an adult to count the number of apples. There will be red, yellow, and green apples to choose from and the children will be encouraged to try and create a pattern using the apples. When all of the pages are complete, I will read the book to the class before sending each child home with their page. I will try to scan the pages of the book so that I can upload a complete AM and PM book onto my classroom website. I will let you know if there are technical difficulties that prevent me from scanning the book. In our feeling table, the children will play again play with toy apples (red, yellow, and green painted wooden balls and ping pong balls) in sand. In the dramatic play area, the children will continue to be able to pretend to bake apple pies. At table toys, the children will continue to work on lacing apple cards, playing the Squiggly Worms game, and roll yellow play dough into worms to place on laminated apple cards. Ms. Cathy Occupational Therapy (9/18/15) Prewriting/Literacy: Each child attempted verbally to identify scissors on a scissors coloring activity, produce prewriting lines/forms, identify their name, attempt to produce letter like forms or print their first name. Hand Skills: Each child was encouraged to hold a crayon with 3 fingers and place scissors in their hand with a “thumbsup”position. Thick paper was used for stability for cutting activities. Fine motor skills : Childsized plastic tongs were used to pick up and place Pom Pom’s into an ice cube tray(16 slots). TallStacker Mighty Monkey game: The children picked up plastic peg monkeys, placed them on a resistive peg board or stacked them. This activity promoted fine motor manipulative hand skills and finger strength. Ms. Karen [email protected] 1
