1. Rules for selecting motor vehicle mechanics:

If the occupational information is based on the 1970 Census, eligible subjects must have industrial

code = 384 and occupational code = 364.

If the occupational information is based on the DB93, eligible subjects must have code = 50.20.10.



If the occupational information is based on the DSE77, eligible subjects must have code = 95.131.

If the occupational information is based on the DISCO88, eligible subjects must have code = 7231.

When possible, we deleted subjects whose job title was ‘Cykelsmed” because they are bicycle mechanics. All other people with this code were selected.

If the occupational information is based on the DISCO08, eligible subjects must have code = 723110

or 723120

Aim: Identify a comparison population of persons not occupationally exposed to asbestos based on

occupation title/code.

Part A: Follow the exposure characterization presented in: Hansen ES. Mortality of auto mechanics. A ten-

year follow-up. Scand J Work Environ Health 1989;15:43-6. The following occupations were selected as

asbestos-unexposed by Hansen in 1989:

We do not agree that carpenters and electricians are not potentially asbestos exposed. Carpenters and
