Dear First Grade Parents and Guardians,
Attached to this letter you will find a UNL Parental/Guardian consent form.It describes the research project that Mr. Kent Steen, a former Rileyteacher, is going to conduct with the first grade classes. This project willoccur during the Geometry and Fractions mathematics unit in May. Weencourage you to sign and return the consent form so that the datacollected from your child’s experience can be included in Mr. Steen’sproject. Your child’s identity and data will be kept totally confidential.
Children who are seven and older will also be asked to sign a “child assentform” indicating their willingness to participate.
This project is an exciting opportunity for Riley first graders to utilize web-based geometry activities created by the National Council of Teachers ofMathematics. The computer activities will not replace the teachers’instruction; they will be used as practice activities.
If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to contact us,or contact Mr. Kent Steen or Dr. David Brooks as listed on the consentform.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Braun Miss Lyon Mrs. Heard

PARENTAL CONSENT FORM
ANALYZING THE IMPACT OF WEB-BASED GEOMETRY APPLETS ON FIRSTGRADE STUDENTS
You are invited to permit your child to participate in this research study. The followinginformation is provided in order to help you make an informed decision whether or notto allow your child to participate. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate toask.Your child is eligible to participate in this study because your child is a first-gradestudent enrolled in Lincoln Public Schools, and will be receiving geometry instruction.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of web-based geometrypractice activities that have been created by the MarcoPolo project(http://www.mped.org). MarcoPolo has a formal written agreement with the NebraskaDepartment of Education as an approved resource for Nebraska teachers and students. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) created the web-basedactivities. NCTM wrote the national math standards, and the geometry chapter in “MathCentral” is based on the NCTM standards.
This study will take place during the Chapter Eight instruction on Geometry andFractions. One section of students will receive the instruction and will complete practiceactivities as recommended in the “Math Central” textbook. The other section willreceive the same instruction, but will use the web-based MarcoPolo geometry activitieswhen a corresponding activity is available. If no corresponding activity is available, they will complete the Math Central practice activity. Both sections of students will beassessed using the Math Central materials. Selection of which section of students willcomplete the web-based activities will be determined by a coin toss.
There are no known risks associated with this research. As a result of participation inthis research, it is possible that your child may obtain a different and possibly betterunderstanding of geometry concepts. The information obtained from this study may alsohelp us better understand what types of web-based student activities are most effectivefor enhancing geometry instruction.
Any information obtained during this study that could identify your child will be keptstrictly confidential. The information obtained in this study will be published in adissertation, and may be published in educational journals or presented at educationalmeetings, but your child’s identity will be kept strictly confidential.

CHILD ASSENT FORM
ANALYZING THE IMPACT OF WEB-BASED GEOMETRY APPLETS ON FIRSTGRADE STUDENTS
We would like to invite you to take part in this study. We are asking you because youare a first grader who is going to study geometry.
In this study, we will try to learn more about how Internet, or web-based, geometryactivities can be used to help children learn more about geometry. Your teacher will stillteach you the geometry lessons, but you may be asked to use a computer to completesome web-based practice activities.
There is no risk to you in this study. You may even learn more about geometry as aresult of your participation.
Your parents will also be asked to give their permission for you to take part in thisstudy. Please talk this over with your parents before you decide whether or not toparticipate.
You do not have to be in this study if you do not want to. If you decide to participate inthe study, you can stop at any time.
If you have any questions at any time, please ask one of the researchers.
IF YOU SIGN THIS FORM IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE DECIDED TOPARTICIPATE AND HAVE READ EVERYTHING THAT IS ON THIS FORM.YOU AND YOUR PARENTS WILL BE GIVEN A COPY OF THIS FORM TOKEEP.

Selection of which section of students willcomplete the web-based activities will be determined by a coin toss. An one hour long,open-ended interview will be conducted to obtain qualitative information regardingyour impressions on student time-on-task, work behaviors, effectiveness of theactivities, and overall thoughts on the process.
There are no known risks associated with this research. There is no compensation forparticipating in this research.
As a result of participation in this research, it is possible that your students may obtain abetter understanding of geometry concepts. The information obtained from this studymay also help us better understand what types of web-based student activities are mosteffective for enhancing geometry instruction.
