Knowledge Review –

Chapter ONEPlease complete this review, and remove it from the manual to hand in to your instructor. If

there’s something you don’t understand, review the related material. If you still don’t under-

stand, be sure to have your instructor explain it to you.

1. Is a gas blend of 19 percent oxygen, 33 percent helium and 48 percent nitro-

gen a trimix? If so, is it a normoxic trimix, and how would you write the

abbreviation for it?

Yes it is trimix. It is not normoxic trimix.

You would abbreviate it TMx 19/33.

2. What are three benefits and three drawbacks of diving with trimix?

Benefits

1. Reduced narcosis

2. Reduced oxygen exposure

3. Reduced breathing resistance

Drawbacks

1. Expense

2. Longer Deco times

3. More complex logistics and planning

3. Below what depth is trimix the broad community standard for all diving?

Below what depth for overhead environments or complex environments? To

what depth is the typical range for new, beginning trimix divers, assuming

experience at that depth during training?

Below 50 metres/165 feet trimix is the broad community standard

for all diving. Below 40 metres/130 feet for overhead or complex

environments. To 75 metres/245 feet is the range for new, begin-

ning trimix divers.

4. Trimix can be made several ways. Describe how trimix is made by partial pres-

sure blending with enriched air.

The blender adds premixed enriched air to a cylinder with helium to

produce the desired trimix.

5. How do you analyze trimix? Is a helium analyzer mandatory? How might a

helium analyzer offset the cost of investing in one?

You analyze trimix like EANx, with an oxygen analyzer to within 1% of

desired blend. Helium analyzer is not mandatory. Helium analyzers

padi.com A-9

Page 10: Appendix

Appendix Tec Trimix Instructor Guide

make it possible to blend up partially filled trimix cylinders, which

can offset helium costs over time.

6. What information should appear on all cylinders used in a trimix dive?

Labels and marking identifying the gas, the analyzed blend, the

diver’s name and the blend’s maximum depth.

7. Describe two ways you can carry four stage/deco cylinders on a trimix dive.

You can carry all cylinders on the left, two stacked and two trailed.

You can carry on the right and left, high oxygen cylinders right and

low oxygen left. The cylinders may be worn stacked, or one worn

each side and the other two trailed.

8. Explain the two problems with using trimix in a dry suit. How do you avoid

these?

Helium conducts heat rapidly so you will get cold. Isobaric counter-

diffusion is possible when you’re breathing a heavy gas surrounded

by a light gas (helium). You avoid both by using a separate inflation

system, ideally with argon.

9. What is the general recommendation regarding how deep you take a cylin-

der, and what is the issue with this recommendation in trimix diving?

The recommendation is to never take a cylinder deeper than you

can breathe it. In trimix diving, if you lose your deco cylinders, you

won’t be able to deco adequately, so the priority is to not lose them

by wearing them the entire dive if necessary.

10. Describe the procedures for gas switches with the two ways you can carry four

stage/deco cylinders on a trimix dive?

You always use NO TOX procedures. For all left, you always

breathe cylinder on top. At switch, trail. You can move cylinders up

under one in use, or wear one and trail three. For right, left, you

breathe top then bottom on left and then top then bottom on right.

It’s common to trail top cylinder after finishing with it.

11. How precise should a decompression stop be? Why is this important on a

trimix dive?

You want to stay within .6 metres/2 feet of stop depth or better. It’s

important because helium’s rapid diffusion makes it less tolerant of

deco stop errors.

12. List five reasons why the use of desktop decompression software is standard

practice in trimix diving.

1. Theoretically there are 100s of possible mixes.

2. It simplifies gas use calculations.

3. You can customize deep stops or use Tmx for deco.

4. It easily generates contingency tables.

5. You need it even with a multigas dive computer since dive

computers do not calculate gas consumption prior to the dive.

13. Name the two basic categories of decompression models found in desktop

deco software and list the basic attributes that distinguish them.

Neo-Haldanean: assumes no bubbles. Tends to bring divers up as

shallow as possible quickly. Lots of field data and testsing.

Bubble models: assumes bubbles form and tries to prevent them.

More stops beginning deeper, but often shorter over all deco.

Relatively little field data and testing.

14. METRIC You’re planning a dive to 57 metres for 30 minutes usingTMx21/35. 15. List four benefits of team diving and how each relates to trimix diving.

1. Higher likelihood of mission success

2. Preparedness and resources for handling emergencies

3. Provides “backup brain”

4. Camaraderie from facing a challgenge

16. Explain how trimix makes it even more important and beneficial for team

members to use compatible gases.

Compatible gases make it easier to handle emergencies, plus helps

keep the team together. Makes “back up brain” better because

everyone switches together and dives the same schedule.

17. List what a Good Divers Main Objective Is To Live stands for, and one aspect

of each step that relates to planning a trimix dive.

[Answers may vary. See text for summary.]

Knowledge Review –

Chapter TWOPlease complete this review, and remove it from the manual to hand in to your instructor. If

there’s something you don’t understand, review the related material. If you still don’t

understand, be sure to have your instructor explain it to you.

1. What is the primary advantage of using a fullface mask for trimix diving?

What two primary considerations do you have in using a fullface mask for

trimix diving?

The primary advantage is that it reduces your risk of drowning if

you have a CNS convulsion. The two primary considerations are

gas switches and gas sharing while wearing the mask.

2. How do you plan dives with a multigas trimix computer? How do you back

one up?

You plan multigas trimix computer dives with desktop deco software.

You back up the computer with either a second multigas trimix com-

puter, or with generated tables, a depth gauge and timer.

padi.com A-13

Page 14: Appendix

Appendix Tec Trimix Instructor Guide

3. What are the two primary advantages and four disadvantages of helium as a

dive gas?

Advantages

1. Doesn’t cause narcosis

2. Less breathing effort due to lower density

Disadvantages

1. Longer dives than comparable air/EANx dives

2. Less forgiving of decompression errors

3. Isobaric counterdiffusion is a theoretical concern

4. Generally inappropriate as a dry suit gas

4. How can putting trimix in your dry suit cause decompression problems?

Trimix in your dry suit can cause DCS by isobaric counterdiffusion

of helium through your skin when you’re breathing a denser gas.

5. What is an END? Using the appropriate tables in the appendix, what is the

END for 73 metres/240 feet if you’re diving with TMx18/33?

END is Equivalent Narcotic Depth. For a given depth and trimix, it is

the depth you would expect the same narcosis with air. Using the

END table, the END for 73 metres is 47 metres; for 240 feet it is

150 feet.

6. What are four considerations in choosing a trimix? What would the “ideal”

trimix be for 73 metres/240 feet be?

1. Narcosis

2. Oxygen exposure

3. Decompression issues

4. Logistics

Using the tables, the ideal trimix for 73 metres is TMx 16/41. For

240 feet it is TMX 16/41.

7. What is a hypoxic trimix? What is a travel gas? When do you need a travel

gas?

A hypoxic trimix is trimix with less than 21% oxygen. A travel gas is

a gas you breathe to get to the minimum useable depth for a hypox-

ic trimix . You need it with a trimxi with less than 16% oxygen, or

less than 18% if at altitude or expecting exertion at the surface.

8. What is a deep stop? What are three ways to determine deep stops using

desktop deco software, and two ways using a multigas trimix computer?

A-14 padi.com

Page 15: Appendix

Tec Trimix Instructor Guide Appendix

A deep stop is a stop for 1 to 5 minutes between the bottom and the

first stop predicted by a neo Haldanean model.

Desktop deco software

1. Automatic generation by software

2. Use a bubble dynamics model

3. Calculate stops manually and enter as waypoints

Multigas trimix computer

1. Calculate in your head during ascent

2. Use the Deep Stop Calculation Table slate

9. As a general rule, which gas should you use at your first deep stop? Why.

As a general rule, you should use your back (bottom) gas at the

first deep stop to give yourself an oxygen exposure reduction after

the high PO2 at depth.

10. What’s an air break? How often should you do them?

An air break is a break to low oxygen gas to reduce the risk of CNS

toxicity. You should do them at least every 20 to 25 minutes for five

minutes, though every 10 to 12 minutes for 2 to 5 minutes has

some theoretical advantages.

11. What’s the theoretical benefit of having a small amount of helium in your deco

gas?

A small amount of helium in the deco gas may slow helium off gas

slightly to reduce potential bubble formation.

12. What’s the optimum way to ascend when trimix diving?

Ascend slowly and gradually, with a momentary pause or stop at

each 3 metres/10 feet until reaching your deco stops. Don’t skip

deco stops even if your schedule lets you . If it does, stop for one

minute at each 3 metres/10 foot interval. between the required stops.

13. Where do you wear travel gas when using it? What’s the procedure for begin-

ning a dive on travel gas?

You normally wear travel gas on the left. It is on top if wearing more

than one cylinder on that side. Travel gas breathing starts at the

surface. Teammates confirm that all are breathing travel gas, then

descend together. At the planned determined depth, the team NO

TOX switches together to back gas. This may be done with the

descent check or when staging deco cylinders.

padi.com A-15

Page 16: Appendix

Appendix Tec Trimix Instructor Guide

14. What are your options if you lose your decompression gases on a trimix dive?

Your options are to get support divers to bring some down to you, if

available. If your teammates have theirs, you may be able to

decompress with theirs after they’re done. Otherwise decompress

as long and as best you can with your back gas; however, you’re at

high risk of DCS.

15. How do you handle a failure with your multigas trimix computer if you’re

using a backup depth gauge, timer and tables, and the failure occurs in the

middle of your decompression?

Find the schedule for your bottom depth and time and then the time

for your present stop. Complete the time for that stop as shown on

the table and follow the table’s schedule for the rest of the decom-

pression.

16. Why are support divers especially beneficial on a trimix dive? What are the

characteristics of an effective support diver?

The added complexity of a trimix dive makes support divers espe-

cially beneficial. An effective support diver is qualified for the sup-

port dive and depths, is a good communicator, is a good problem

solver and has patience.

17. What four responsibilities do you have in the dive community due to your

role and position as a Tec Trimix Diver?

1. Be a role model

2. Show humility

3. Bring up less experienced divers

4. Stay current

Chapter THREEPlease complete this review, and remove it from the manual to hand in to your instructor. If

there’s something you don’t understand, review the related material. If you still don’t

understand, be sure to have your instructor explain it to you.

1. You make a dive to 55 metres/180 feet for 20 minutes on TMx18/50. Not

counting deep stops, your deco schedule is 21 metres/70 feet for 1 minute, 18

metres/60 feet for 2, 15 metres/50 feet for 2, 12 metres/40 feet for 4, and 9

metres/30 feet for 7 using TMx50/10. Your final stop is 6 metres/20 feet for 24

minutes on oxygen. At the 18 metre/60 foot stop, your dry suit valve sticks

momentarily, causing you to rise to nearly 6 metres/20 feet as you disconnect

it, regain control and redescend to 18 metres/60 feet in less than 2 minutes.

What should you do?

Complete the 18 metre/60 foot stop and all stops up to and includ-

ing the 12 metre/40 foot stop as scheduled.. Extend the 9 metre/30

foot stop to 10.5 minutes and the 6 metre/20 foot stop to 36 min-

utes. Stay at 6 metres/20 feet as long as reasonably possible past

36 minutes.

2. What should you do if you experience DCS symptoms underwater?

Signal your teammates that you think you’re bent. If recompression

is not immediately available, complete decompression. Extend 6

metre/20 foot stop (ideally on oxygen) while your teammates com-

plete decompression, surface and prepare for transportation to

medical care. Stay on oxygen after surfacing and let your team-

mates deal with your gear, etc. Continue first aid for DCS until

reaching medical care.

3. What should you do if you experience CNS oxygen toxicity symptoms during

a trimix dive?

Immediately switch to low oxygen gas. Ascend if possible. Stay off

high oxygen gas until at least 15 minutes past the last symptoms.

If possible without affecting unreasonably affecting decompression,

stay on lower oxygen gas and limit oxygen exposure. Abort the dive

if possible.

4. Describe the level of streamlining and technique skill expected of a Tec

Trimix Diver.

padi.com A-17

Page 18: Appendix

Appendix Tec Trimix Instructor Guide

Everything should be tucked, stowed and tight with nothing dangling

or protruding. Your buoyancy control should be precise, and you

should swim without stirring up silt, staying off the bottom.

5. Why does shallow breathing lead to rapid breathing and high gas consump-

tion? What are two ways that carbon dioxide buildup can affect you on a trim-

ix dive?

Shallow breathing is less efficient, so carbon dioxide builds up lead-

ing to rapid breathing. This consumes gas fast because of the

depth. High carbon dioxide can cause high gas consumption, and it

can cause narcosis to increase.

6. What are four differences of diving with trimix versus diving without it with

respect to mission planning?

The four differences of diving with trimix than can affect a mission

are decompression duration, depth, narcosis reduction and that

trimix is easier to breathe.

7. What is the primary mission of any dive?

The primary mission of any dive is for the team to return from the

dive unhurt.

Knowledge Review –

Chapter FOURPlease complete this review, and remove it from the manual to hand in to your instructor. If

there’s something you don’t understand, review the related material. If you still don’t

understand, be sure to have your instructor explain it to you.

1. What are the limits of trimix diving? Why?

There are no limits because technical diving is still being explored.

2. What are the limits of your training in the Tec Trimix Diver course?

To 75 metres/245 feet or the deepest depth reached in the course,

whichever is less, in conditions comparable to those in which I

trained.

A-18 padi.com

Page 19: Appendix

Tec Trimix Instructor Guide Appendix

3. How do you extend your limits as a Tec Trimix Diver?

Gradually, with dives progressively deeper. Master new conditions

shallow before going deeper. Team up with more experienced divers.

4. What are your responsibilities as a Tec Trimix Diver with respect to the state

of the art in trimix diving in particular, and technical diving in general?

It’s my responsibility to stay informed about the state of the art in

tec diving. It’s my responsibility to stop tec diving if the risk

becomes intolerable or my physical condition makes the risk

unacceptable. It’s my responsibility to keep my skills and knowledge

fresh, and to brush up after inactivity before resuming.

5. What’s the most important personal quality you can have with respect to

extending your limits?

Patience.

6. What is “crush depth”? What makes it an issue for trimix diving?

Crush depth is the depth at which equipment can fail due to the

pressure. It’s an issue in trimix diving because some equipment was

designed for recreational diving, which is much shallower.

7. What’s the safest course with respect to avoiding crush depth?

Stay within the manufacturer’s rated depth for the equipment.

8. What risks do you face by exceeding equipment’s depth rating?

Catastrophic failure, seal failure and cracks, and non catastrophic

crush.

9. What other depth-related issues might you encounter as a trimix diver?

Gauge and computer limits, BCD/dry suit inflation, wet suit com-

pression, regulator performance, and the reliability of decompres-

sion models.

10. What should you look for with respect to equipment rated to deep depths?

Check the manufacturer depth rating. Look for liquid filled mechani-

cal gauges. Trimix dive computers generally are rated to trimix

depths. Look for bulkheads in large items like light cansisters and

DPVs.

Principles for Surviving a Tec DivePrinciple of Secondary Life Support. You should

have at least two independent sources of anything that keeps

you alive and unhurt: gas supply, depth and decompression

information, buoyancy control, etc. If one fails, you abort the

dive on the other.

Principle of Gas Reserve. You should have ample gas

to handle reasonably foreseeable emergencies and still com-

plete your decompression. This generally means that one third

or more of each gas should be a reserve.Principle of Self Sufficiency. At any point in the dive,

you should be able to complete it independently.Principle of Depth. Your dive plan should account for

narcosis, decompression, oxygen toxicity and gas supply needs

based on a planned depth and a contingency depth (and times)

that you do not exceed.

Principle of Simplicity (KISS principle). Your dive

should be planned as simple as possible, with complexities

eliminated.

Principle of Procedure and Discipline. You follow

the rules and work the procedures without exception on every

dive, no matter how familiar the dive and no matter how much

experience you have. Cutting corners kills.

OMITTED DECOMPRESSION – from deeper than 6 m/20 ft,

no DCS symptoms• Return to stop depth as quickly as possible (less than five minutes

ideally).• Decompress according to schedule up to and including

12 m/40 ft stop.• Extend 9 m/30 ft stop and all shallower stops by 1.5 times normal

deco time.• Extend final stop beyond 1.5 times deco time as much as practicable,

gas allowing.

OXYGEN TOXICITY – CNS symptoms underwater• Immediately switch to low oxygen gas (back gas or travel gas)

• Ascend as much as possible without compromising decompression.

• Stay on low oxygen gas for at least 15 minutes after all symptoms subside.• Keep PO2 as low as possible (gas choice/depth) for the

deco schedule.

Emergency Procedures Slate

MISSED DECOMPRESSION STOP – Immediate Redescent

• Immediately redescend (within one minute if possible).

• Complete the stop plus one minute.

• Decompress according to normal schedule.

MISSED DECOMPRESSION STOP – Redescent Not Possible

• Stay at the next stop for combined time of both stops.

• Extend 6 m/20 ft stop and final stop by 1.5 times normal deco time.

DELAY IN ASCENT – Before Reaching First Stop

• Add delay to bottom time and decompress on new schedule.

• Extend final stop as much as practicable, gas allowing.

DELAY IN ASCENT – Between Stops

• Not critical if not longer than two-three minutes.

• Do not count delay time as deco time.

• Extend final stop as much as practicable, gas allowing.

OMITTED DECOMPRESSION – from 6 m/20 ft or shallower,

no DCS symptoms and return to stop in less than one minute

• Complete decompression as scheduled.

• Extend final stop as much as practicable, gas allowing.

OMITTED DECOMPRESSION – from 6 m/20 ft or shallower,

no DCS symptoms and return more than one minute

• Extend 6 m/20 ft stop and final stop by 1.5 times normal deco time.

• Extend final stop beyond 1.5 times deco time as much as practicable,

gas allowing.

Further, I understand that diving with compressed air, oxygen-enriched air (nitrox) trimix, and 100 percent oxygen involves certain inherent risks that include but are not limited to: decom-pression sickness, embolism, oxygen toxicity, inert gas narcosis, marine life injuries, fire and/orexplosion hazards, and barotrauma or hyperbaric injuries which can occur and require treatmentin a recompression chamber. I further understand that Technical Scuba Diving activities may beconducted at a site that is remote, either by time or distance or both, from such a recompressionchamber. I still choose to participate in such Technical Scuba Diving activities, despite the possi-ble absence of a recompression chamber in proximity to the dive site.

_____ I further declare that I understand Technical Diving involves risks which exceed thoseencountered in recreational scuba diving. These risks may include but are not limited to: depthswhich exceed the limits of recreational diving; decompression procedures; over-head environ-ments and/or the risk of entanglement which may prevent direct ascent to the surface in the eventof an emergency; sudden loss of visibility; necessity for computing both nitrogen and oxygenloading to plan dives; and the need for specialized training, equipment, and planning for differenttypes of Technical Scuba Diving. I understand that Technical Scuba Diving may involve a greaterrisk of serious injury or death than recreational scuba diving, and I assume the risk of this activity.

Tec Diver Statement of Understanding and Learning Agreement

This statement informs you of hazards, risks and your responsibilities for participating in the DSAT Tec Diver

course. Your signature acknowledges that you accept these risks and responsibilities.

I, ___________________________________________________, understand that as a DSAT Tec Diver I should:

1. Maintain good mental and physical health for diving.Refrain from being under the influence of alcohol ordrugs when tec diving. Stay proficient in divingskills, in particular, the skills required for certifica-tion as a DSAT Tec Diver.

2. Engage only in diving activities consistent with mytraining and experience.

3. Use complete, well-maintained, reliable equipmentfor which I have appropriate training.

4. Adhere to the team diving concept, but always beprepared to complete any dive without the assis-tance of a team mate. Although self sufficient, theresponsible tec diver dives as part of a team andadheres to team diving principles.

5. Maintain the proper attitude during training in whichI agree to:

• Follow the instructor’s directions and dive plansstrictly, and not to separate from the instructor ormy dive team.

• Refrain from tec diving outside this course until I amfully qualified and certified.

• Accept the risk for this type of diving, and for spe-cific risks unique to each dive environment, and toimmediately notify the instructor if this riskbecomes intolerable for me.

• Recognize the desirability of carrying diver accidentinsurance that covers tec diving (if available in mylocal area), and recognize that my instructor mayrequire me to have it.

6. Demonstrate self sufficiency – plan each dive asthough it will be necessary to make the dive andhandle all emergencies alone.

7. Demonstrate discipline and an attitude consistentwith responsible technical diving – I will not cut cor-ners, bend the rules, disregard dive plans, omit safe-ty equipment or exceed the limits of my training.

8. Obtain an orientation when diving in new environ-ments.

9. Know, obey and respect local diving laws and regula-tions including private land owner relations.

10. Accept the responsibility for my personal safety, while accepting and acknowledging the risks, anddemands tec diving imposes.

11. Stay informed on and dive according to the stateof the art in diving, tec diving, dive rescue, diveequipment and other influences on my safety as atec diver.

12. Accept that technical scuba diving has many gen-eral risks and hazards that either don’t exist inrecreational diving, or aren’t as severe, including:

• No direct access to the surface in an emergencydue to decompression requirements.

• Hypoxia/hyperoxia resulting from switching to thewrong gas, which can lead to drowning.

• Narcosis, which can lead to poor judgment/baddecisions that can cause an accident.

• DCS due to improper gas analysis, missed decostops, loss of deco gas and individual susceptibili-ty. DCS can cause permanent injury or death.

• Omitted procedures due to task loading, whichcan lead to accidents, DCS, air embolism, oxygentoxicity, or drowning.

• Drowning or air embolism due to BCD failure.• Extensive equipment requirements with redundant

configurations, which can lead to ergonomic com-plexity, increased risk of error and a physical bur-den.

13. I accept that a significant difference exists betweenrecreational scuba diving and technical scuba div-ing, and that in technical scuba diving, even if youdo everything right, there is still a higher inherentpotential for an accident leading to permanentinjury or death.

14. I accept that physical fitness affects my perform-ance and ability as a tec diver. Lack of the physicalfitness required can affect my safety by limiting myability to respond to an emergency, or by directlyleading to injuries. It is my responsibility to stay fitto dive, and to dive with the limits of my fitness.

I have read the above statements and have had any questions answered to my satisfaction. I understand the impor-tance and purpose of these practices and recognize they are for my own safety and well being.

I understand that failing to ahere to the above statements will put me at risk, and may be grounds for my dismissalfrom the Tec Deep Diver course. I acknowledge that the instructor is not permitted to and will not certify me if Idon’t meet all course performance requirements or if I demonstrate an attitude or behavior incompatible withresponsible technical diving practices.
