Wren Road A cul de sac adjoining the A202 Camberwell Church Street. It is a largely residential road that leads to the police station car park and the rear of the Butterfly Walk shopping centre. The proposals being developed include a pocket park area to the rear of the site with a theme of the Camberwell Blue butterfly. 03- Reduce the dominance of traffic and promote the
design of quiet space
HOW ...
HOW ...
HOW ...
Project Objectives & Design Actions
• Introduce traffic calming measures including raised surfaces betweenfootways and carriageways with a minimum of 60mm kerbs.
• Design for 20mph maximum speed.
• Remove central island on Elmington Road and Kimpton Road to shortencrossing distances and enhance the overall look and feeling of the area.
• Narrow carriageway width to a minimum standard.
• Provide 40 parking spaces to compensate for the loss along CamberwellGreen and retain facilities for residents and visitors.
• Mitigate the impact of parking bays using trees and planting.
• Average gain of 2.5 metres footway space across the entire study area topromote walking and the comfort experience of all users.
02- Revitalise and unify the public realm around the Magistrates’ Court to create one space that links the different uses together
• Create clear gateways at junctions to define the space and create asense of arrival.
• Extendthelibrarygardenontothe“plaza”tocreateasenseofcontinuity and integrate the proposal with the Camberwell newlibrary.
• DefineandclearlymarktheentrancesoftheMagistrates’Courttoenhance the overall legibility and highlight the building as a locallandmark.
• Harmonise the material palette and pavement to unify the publicrealm.
• Declutter the streets and provide a consistent street furniturepalette using the material and the elements implemented atCamberwell Library.
01- Reinforce the connectivity through the Green Link
corridor and encourage walking and cycling
• Soften hard-landscape and building edges by planting trees to providehealthy and green environment for local residents and visitors.
• Provide clear and safe crossing points to encourage walkability througha wide variety of routes and overall good permeability between the frontand back of the Magistrate Court.
• Design the public realm around the Magistrate Court to respond toCamberwell’sPocketSpaceStrategy.
• Enhance link towards Camberwell Green.
• Utilise green space in front of Drayton House for a community garden.
