Tea for the Elderly

Level 2 Health and Social Care learners worked in partnership with the Hospitality and Catering team to produce an afternoon tea project for several of the local care homes. This was a pilot project with an aim to expand it next year. The Catering department came up with an afternoon tea menu that was appropriate for the members coming, and the Health and Social Care students arranged for different games i.e. bingo, scrabble and a raffle. It turned out to be a successful afternoon.

Games Creation Level 2 and Level 3 Health and Social Care students embedded maths groups designed and created a game relating to numeracy for primary school aged children (7-8 year olds). Once they had created their games, the students went to Carisbrooke Primary School to play their games with 2 classes. The students from the college and the primary school had a great time.

Coffee and Cake Pathways learners held a coffee and cake morning and raised £54 for John’s Club. John’s Club is dedicated to providing social and leisure activities to vulnerable people aged 15+ with special needs, learning and physical disabilities.

Science Museum Trip By Sixth Form

Sixth form learners had a fantastic day out at The Science Museum in London taking in the exhibition on power and energy, right through to Victorian medicine and the advent of tools with gears, through to computers, pocket calculators and mobile phones. Students saw how every advance in technology improved the ability of subsequent generations to engineer even more amazing technologies. This spoke of the importance of engineering in making even more advances that will take us nowhere short of the fantastic things we see in sci-fi films in the short future. Thinking how far we have come with the advances of the last 40 years impressed on the group how the

amazing technology we have today will spur further advances that we will experience 40 years from now...

For the past few weeks Public Services students have been volunteering for a project with Age UK called Recall and Reminisce. The project involves interviewing ex-service members over the age of 50.

The students asked questions about the interviewee’s lives in the Services and their experiences. They also asked what the interviewees did after their time in the Services and how they were affected by their time in the services. The ex-servicemen told about conflicts that they had taken part in such as Hong Kong, India, America, Ireland, Germany and Poland.

The stories that the students have been told by the interviewees have been very interesting and they have given a helpful insight to what life was like in the Services in the past. So far the students have interviewed 8 ex-service personnel from the army and the R.A.F. From what they have told the students some of them have joined the services soon after WW2. Terry Gaskin (Tutor) said “The educational benefits for the students in this exercise are huge. Not just their academic development, but also their social and moral understanding of an older generation. It is something I would like to see repeated”.

RAF at College The RAF Regiment paid a visit to college to talk to all college students about different careers within the service including the pay and other benefits of joining the RAF. Later they conducted some activities with the Public Services students. One of the activities involved using a large tyre which had to be taken from one point to the other and was a race against another team. Another team activity involved doing sit-ups with a log, and it was important to all work together. The last activity was to pull two jerry cans which were filled with water. This had to be done sitting on the ground, which made it much harder to do.

The Public Services students found the day informative and very enjoyable.
