The Philadelphia Eagles defeat the New England Patriots at the Super Bowl LII! Yeah for the underdogs! We are now enjoying the miracles of athleticism and grace watching the XXIII Olympic Winter Games at PyeongChang 2018. I watch (in awe) as human beings perform with superhero strength and agility. Millions and millions of fans cheer and support their favorite teams, players, and Olympic hopefuls. The 2018 Grammy Awards showcased artistic superheroes, blessed with the ability to create silence into music. The Academy Awards are coming on February 26. We will celebrate performances of other extraordinarily talented human beings as they bring stories to life. As talented and gifted as these human beings are, not one saves a life. We do. Every day. Psychiatric nurses do not have millions of fans cheering for victory. We are the silent superheroes. Superhealers, supertherapists, supercare givers. Our superpowers are the power of listening, speaking for those who can't speak for themselves, identifying dangerous drug regimes, identifying unsafe conditions for patients, securing the safety of others through the ability to predict, assess, comfort, empower and prevent harm. I could make a strong case for selflessness over selfishness as a common core trait of psychiatric nurses. Soon, all our Florida superheroes will have the ability to strengthen their powers. Our Annual Spring Conference will focus on how psychiatric nurses can expertly respond to a crisis. Learn how to assess suicide risk and proudly receive your certificate in suicide assessment. APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention will be the first day of the conference. Should you ever need to validate your competency in this area, evidence of competency will be critical. "Become a cardcarrying APNA Suicide Prevention Provider!" Disaster mental health nursing skills should be part of our "super skills.” Our chosen specialty has the basics of this skill set, yet we have the chance to learn from the leaders. Considering our states historical hurricane exposure, recent battles with Irma, Maria and the Pulse Nightclub massacre, we have firsthand experience with trauma exposure. How do we care for the victims who have survived? The Red Cross will be providing Psychological First Aide: Disaster Mental Health Training, for FREE. President’s Message February 2018

All nurses, especially psychiatric nurses, face the fallout of patients battling addiction. We can not underestimate the severity of this epidemic. Learn how to become part of the solution in fighting the crisis of opioid addiction.  As nurses, we protect and fight for those who are abused and exploited every day. The incidence of those harmed by human trafficking has become a public health crisis. You will be able to complete the Board of Nursing requirement outlined in S. 464.013, F.S at the conference.   APNA and The Florida Chapters Board of Directors care very deeply about celebrating our very own super‐heroes. Our  "Oscars" or "Grammy's” otherwise known as The Florida APNA Awards Ceremony will take place at the Annual Florida State Conference. Please nominate your superhero. Let's give our chosen super‐heroes our version of the "gold medal”.   I hope to see you at the University of Miami on Friday, April 13 & Saturday, April 14, 2018.  In addition to the exemplary speakers selected to present, the suicide competency training, Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Training, Human Trafficking course, and the State Awards Ceremony, you will have the chance to feel the warmth of connection and belonging to the Florida Chapter.   As a bonus, this year we will hold a Silent Raffle, with the chance to win multiple 5‐star luxury hotel accommodations for a few lucky nurses who will win a vacation, well deserved.  Merriam‐Webster dictionary definition of a "superhero" is "a fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers; an exceptionally skillful or successful person; a very heroic person. Recognize your "super‐hero” self. Celebrate your power, first. Nominate someone you respect and "pay it forward." Let's celebrate our super‐heroes.   Let's all practice our "superhero stance"— you know it…. legs spread apart firmly on the floor, both arms on your hips, chin up. Social psychologist, Amy Cuddy, named this "Power Posing.”  The stance of power. Feel your power. The power of healer. Strike a pose.  On behalf of your Board of Directors, we look forward to your participation and thank you for the support for your Chapter.  Warmly,
