  • 1. Music Video AnalysisArtist: Aphex Twin Title: Come To Daddy Director: Chris CunninghamThis concept-based video begins with an establishing shot of a council estate, the same council estate used in many scenes from A Clockwork Orange. The filter used makes the building look quite run down and grimey, this idea is reinforced by the fact that it is shot on an overcast day.Next, there is a long shot of an old lady walking her dog towards the camera, you then see that she is walking towards a pile of junk including a TV and shopping trolley. As the woman gets closer, the director uses a shot reverse shot focusing on the old lady's face and the TV, indicating to the viewer that there will soon be some sort of interaction between the two... Next you see the old woman at the edge of shot, movement can be seen in the shadows behind her, the camera then cuts to the point of view of the person in the shadows, so it is as if the viewer is watching the old lady but through someone else's eyes. There is no real music playing at this point in the video, all you can hear is eerie, inhuman sounds... You are then shown the feet of a little girl running through a puddle, thenit quickly cuts back to the old lady. As her dog begins to urinate on theTV, it springs to life with a picture of a distorted face. The dog is barkingat the TV, yet you hear no barking, this distorting of your senses helps toenforce the sense of surrealism felt throughout the film.As the person on the TV begins to speak the words I want your soul, I will eat your soul, the old lady releases her grip on her dog's lead and begins to stagger around in a scared manner. There are lots of short shots cutting between the man on the TV and the old lady, this use of short shots does not allow the viewer to take much in at once and therefore makes the viewer almost feel disoriented, much like the old lady would be feeling. This also helps to keep the viewer's attention focused on what is happening,Next, you see the old lady happen upon a gang of small school children, all with the face of Richard D. James (Aphex Twin). This has become the star image motif and his face is imposed onto other people in many of Aphex Twin's videos. The children then proceed to run about the estate with no clear intentions. When the voice in the TV starts saying Come to daddy, the gang congregates in front of the TV. One child picks up the TV and they begin running around again.

2. The next sequence is of the gang of children chasing a man into his van. The camera shots are short and done using a hand held camera so the viewer gets a feeling of intensity and a fast pace. Then, the tone completely changes as the music changes to a small girl's voice singing over the sound of a piano or similar instrument playing as you see two of the children holding hands and skipping towards the camera out of the darkness. This is followed by shots of the gang of children smashing up bins, hitting sticks against walls and pushing and shoving each other... As this happens, the music changes back to the original dark, fast paced beat from before... This juxtaposition works well to confuse the viewer and give them an uneasy feeling, keeping with the feel of the entire video. The music then changes again, to a slightly less hectic sounding beat as you are shown a shot of the TV from the start of the video. As you get closer to the TV, it cuts to a shot of two of the children standing above the TV waiting... You begin to wonder what they are waiting for as suddenly the TV begins to give birth. What comes out of the TV is some kind of anorexic human-like monster which proceeds to scream into the face of the old lady with the force of a hurricane. After the screaming, the camera then cuts to a shot of the council estate once again, the picture flickers like it would on an old TV set, giving the viewer the feeling that they are once again watching the television shown earlier on in the video. The next scenes are of the TV beast with all of his children gathered around him in a way reminiscent of a scene from the film 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind'.Longer camera shots are used here, the viewer has more time to take in all there is to see in each shot. From here onwards, the beast now also has the face of Richard D. James. The camera then cuts to more short shots of the anorexic beast dancing in a twitchy, jerky manner. These inhuman movements, along with the fast-paced cutting between different angles and shots make the viewer feel uneasy and unsettled, which seems to be exactly what Chris Cunningham had intended the whole video to do. The camera also briefly cuts to the old lady once more, her dog and the gang of children among other various shots of random things such as splashes of water. The lyrics are minimal but throughout the video, the lyrics are illustrated by the visuals in that you can see the face on the TV screen singing the lyrics and also when he says Come to daddy the children gather round the television showing that he is their 'daddy' this might be why they have the same mask towards the end of the video. There is also a clear link between the music and visuals in that as the music changes beat and the pace fastens or slows, as does the rate of cutting between shots. 3. This extremely unsettling music video deservedly won a place in The 100 Greatest Scary Moments on Channel 4. It is a video that's main purpose is to frighten the viewer. It, like most of Aphex Twin's videos, keeps your eyes glued to the screen due to sheer horror at what you are being presented with.
