SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS PROGRAMME

“Cultivate interest in the field of science and

technology among students”

(MMK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, PENANG STATE GOVERNMENT)

The SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS PROGRAMME (PPST) aspires to bring science

and technology subjects closer to the student population through ‘participatory learning’. The aim is to

develop a talent pool that is drawn towards science via the ‘feel and touch’ effect at the early stages of

learning development in an entertaining and fun environment. Series of activities and programmes will

be lined up with a collaborative effort between public sector, private sector and non-governmental

organisation, academicians as well as community (students and teachers), contributing to the

development of the State’s human capital.

It started as a pilot project in 1998 and continues to collaborate with various institutions and agencies

to organise talks, study trips, field study and camps with the aim to instil awareness of the importance

of science, technology and environment in daily life; and also to encourage more students to study in

the science stream.

The theme of the programme is to “Cultivate interest in science and technology study among school

students”.

Among the collaborative partners of the programmes are Universiti Sains Malaysia (School of Aerospace

Engineering, School of Biological Science, School of Education, School of Life Sciences, Astronomy Club,

etc), Malaysia Nature Society, Association of Science & Mathematics Education Penang (ASMEP),

Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM), Friends of Penang Botanic

Gardens Society and many others.

Its objectives are as follows:

a. To provide hands-on experiential learning of science and technology outside the classroom

b. To enhance knowledge and skills in the field of science and technology

c. To bring about awareness of the importance/application of science and technology in daily life

d. To enable students to relate current social and environmental issues with science and technology

e. To provide information on the prospects of job/career related to science and technology

PROGRAM PENGGALAKAN SAINS DAN TEKNOLOGI (PPST) adalah programpembelajaran untuk pelajar sekolah bagi memberi pendedahan ilmu sains dan teknologiserta aplikasinya dalam kehidupan harian. Justeru itu ia menitikberatkan usaha memupukkesedaran terhadap budaya sains dan teknologi di kalangan para pelajar supaya merekaberminat dan berani menceburi kerjaya dalam bidang sains dan teknologi.

Program tahunan ini dibiayai oleh Kerajaan Negeri Pulau Pinang dan dilaksanakan dengankerjasama pelbagai institusi pendidikan dan badan bukan kerajaan yang terlibat dalambidang sains dan teknologi, antaranya ialah Universiti Sains Malaysia (KejuruteraanAeroangkasa, Sains Biologi, Sains Fizik, Sains Kimia, Ilmu Falak dan sebagainya); PersatuanPencinta Alam Malaysia, Persatuan Pendidikan Sains dan Matematik Pulau Pinang;Seameo-Recsam, Friends of Penang Botanic Gardens Society dan sebagainya.

Tema program ini adalah “ Memupuk minat dalam bidang sains dan teknologi di kalanganmurid-murid sekolah”

Tujuan utama PPST adalah untuk menggalakan para pelajar di Negeri Pulau Pinang untukmeminati sains dan teknologi serta bersikap berani menceburkan diri di dalam sebarangaktiviti yang berkaitan sains dan teknologi. Antara objektifnya adalah seperti berikut:

a. Memberi pembelajaran berbentuk secara experimen dalam bidang sains danteknologi diluar kawasan sekolah

b. Meningkatkan ilmu dan kemahiran pelajar dalam bidang sains dan teknologic. Memupuk kesedaran akan kepentingan aplikasi ilmu sains dan teknologi dalam

kehidupan harian.d. Memberi pendedahan kepada murid-murid sekolah berkenaan dengan perhubungan

isu semasa berkaitan dengan alam sekitar dan sosial dengan sains dan teknologi.e. Memberi maklumat berkenaan dengan kerjaya dalam bidang sains dan teknologi.

Pihak Kerajaan Negeri Pulau Pinang berharap generasi muda masa kini sebagai golonganpelapis professional akan terus berusaha untuk membangunkan Negeri Pulau Pinang kearah kemajuan sains dan teknologi di masa hadapan.

PENANG EDUCATION COUNCIL (PEC)was formed under the State Government Executive Council for Education to facilitate inputfrom educationists on how to assist the State Government in developing and positioning Penang into a prominent centre forlearning and education. It was set up to facilitate continuous quality improvement in cultivation of skills, mental, moral andaesthetic development as well as informal education. The Council’s mission is to act as a catalyst for change by providing theplatform for lively exploration of new ideas and stimulating the exploration and development of innovative solutions, therebycontributing to Penang’s development as the foremost centre for education and learning in the country. PPST is one of theprogramme that comes under the purview of Penang Education Council.
