APPEARANCE CHANGE ON REMAN SHORT BLOCKS Announcement
Reman will often employ advanced salvage technologies to mill a cylinder block deck to remove minor nicks, dents, or pitting. Where the deck height no longer meets print specs, the blocks may then have to be sprayed and remilled back to specification. These Reman blocks go out with an appearance like that seen in Figure 1.
Figure 2 is a view of a block which has undergone advanced cleaning processes but did not require spraying and remilling to meet specifications. In this case, there may remain some evidence of prior use such as the staining that can be seen in Figure 2. This staining will not affect the performance of the block. The block assembly meets all of the reusability and salvage specifications as outlined in SEBF8076 Specifications to Salvage Contact Surfaces of Cylinder Blocks. To date, blocks with staining have been used in Reman Long Block and Engine products. Where needed to support Short Block requirements, the staining has been milled off often requiring spray processes to bring the surfaces back to specification.
Effective with this notification, Cat Reman is announcing that customers in the future may begin to receive Short Blocks that have this staining. It is important they be made aware that the
staining will not affect the performance, meets all the salvage and reuse guidelines and new part specifications, and that these short blocks are acceptable for use in any engine application.
Reasons for Policy Change
Cat Reman strives to provide cost effective repair options by converting used parts (cores) to good-as-new condition using a variety of advanced cleaning, advanced salvage, and strict process and quality controls. Reman parts deliver good-as-new quality, performance, and durability but won't necessarily look exactly the same as new. Cat Reman is committed to ensuring wear or damage in critical areas is addressed to return the part to print specifications but certain purely cosmetic issues should be viewed as an acceptable trade-off for the significant savings of the Reman product.
Reman parts are not the solution for every customer in every situation. They are designed and manufactured to provide a comparable service life to an equivalent new part. Customers should be clear on what options are available and what the advantages / disadvantages of each are. They need to understand that Reman can be a cost effective repair solution and that it is the ability to salvage and reuse material in a cost effective manner that makes this option possible.
