The Big Ideas

The AP Chemistry curriculum is divided into 6 big ideas:

Big Idea 1: The chemical elements are fundamental building materials of matter, and all matter can be understood in terms of arrangements of atoms. These atoms retain their identity in chemical reactions.Big Idea 2: Chemical and physical properties of materials can be explained by the structure and the arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules and the forces between them.Big Idea 3: Changes in matter involve the rearrangement and/or reorganization of atoms and/or the transfer or electrons.Big Idea 4: Rates of chemical reactions are determined by details of the molecular collisions.Big Idea 5: The laws of thermodynamics describe the essential role of energy and explain and predict the direct of changes in matter.Big Idea 6: Any bond or intermolecular attraction that can be formed can be broken. These two processes are in a dynamic competition, sensitive to initial conditions and external perturbations.

• There are 16 AP Chemistry sponsored laboratory investigations

• At the minimum, 6 of these labs must be in a guided inquiry format

• You must write your own procedure given a question/problem to solve

Section 1: Multiple Choice• ~60 questions

• 1 hour and 30 minutes

• NO CALCULATOR

• 50% of exam score

Section 2: Free Response• 7 Questions

• 3 long questions

• 4 short questions

• 1 hour and 45 minutes

• Calculator allowed

• 50% of exam scoreYou will be provided with a periodic table and formulas/constants reference sheet for both sections

FRQ Scoring

• Compounding error will not count against you multiple times• The initial mistake will receive a point deduction

• All further calculations are graded using your answers from previous parts

• Significant figures• At least one question will ask for the answer to be given in correct significant figures

• All other questions are given flexibility ±1 sig fig of the correct answer

AP Scores

• Approximate Percentages:

37% = 367% = 5

College Credit

• ODU: 3• Two semesters lecture

• CNU: 3 or 4• 3 – one semester lecture and lab

• 4 – two semesters lecture and lab

• VCU: 3 or 5• 3 – one semester lecture and lab

• 5 – two semesters lecture and lab

• JMU: 3 or 4• 3 – one semester lecture and lab

• 4 – two semesters lecture for majors OR two semesters lecture and lab for non-majors
