Eddie Green 11-3-1933 to 25-2-2011

Eddie started wood turning as a hobby in December 1998 after a long love of wooden turned objects that he had admired through-out his life. His working life had revolved around metal and so there was so much to learn. He researched the equipment that he would need and brought himself a lathe then went off to learn some basic skills in a two day intensive woodturning course from one of Australia’s internationally recognized turners. Eddie’s tutor encouraged him to enter his work in the Novice sec-tion at the Australian National Wood turning Exhibition. In his first year Eddie won a first prize for his work, only six months after starting to turn. He continued to enter his work on a regular basis and received numerous awards over the years. He was also successful at the Wonthaggi District Show and was a great supporter of the Phillip Island Artist’s Society at their Easter and Cup Weekend Exhibitions. He was delighted to win the award for Best 3D Exhibit in 2010. His work was also seen locally at the biannual San Remo Art Show.

He shared his hobby with his wife Lois. They travelled widely to further their skills, visiting galleries, attending and giving workshops, demonstrations and seminars. Eddie preferred to work with Australian grown timbers and his hobby saw him expand his knowl-edge of timbers and their properties, and learning all aspects of wood turning including the preparation of the wood, cutting blanks and slabbing timber. Over the years he explored different aspects of turning as his work developed. More recently he started to make jewellery boxes in addition to his turning, another new challenge. Eddie loved his hobby, the people he met associated with the different aspects of his craft and the oppor-tunity to pass on his skills to others. He continued to spend time each day in his beloved workshop up

ASPI Club Members Easter Exhibition. All reports from members and guests seem to suggest that the exhibition was a great success. Many thanks to the volunteers for setting up, the members who submitted their work for display and to all who assisted on the reception desk. The numbers on display were down marginally but what was lacking in quantity was made up for in quality. Sales were few but what was sold did help with the costs involved with the show. I am looking forward to our next exhibition on the Cup Week-end in November. Let’s make this our biggest ever display and have another quality display.

The countdown is ‘ON’ for our biggest event of the year – the VAPS (Victorian As-sociation of Photography Societies) annual Convention ! Taking place at various ven-ues in 2 weeks’ time, the public will be able to enjoy a very high quality display of photography at the annual VAPS InterClub Competition in the St Philips Church Hall. Held over the weekend 21 - 22nd May, VAPS members and registered locals will participate in a wide range of workshops and hear from some very interesting speakers. Jack Faine, who with his father Jon (774 radio personality), travelled from

Melbourne to London - 39,231 kms overland - in 6 months ! Jack will present a pictorial talk of their overland road trip, documented in their book ‘From Here To There.’ A number of commercial excursions are also planned, depending on numbers e.g.: French Island and Seal watching cruise. Registration forms are available at http://www.vaps.org.au/Documents.aspx or contact our local VAPS Coordinator Rob McKay on [email protected] We’re almost ‘GO!’ for our 2011 Calendar, after a fantastic sponsorship drive by Gillian Armstrong and Ken Wilkins, that has heralded wonderful local business support and an ongoing relationship with a major local tourist attraction. We’ll tell you more about all our generous sponsors when we’re ready to launch. Needless to say, we’re all very excited ! More good news came to Gillian over the recent ASPI Easter Exhibition, when her ‘Hermit Crab’ won the ‘People’s Choice’ award for best Photograph. Thank you everyone for your support of this local exhibition. Our sympathies go to Maurice Johnson, a past member of the club, on the loss of his lovely wife Heather-belle. Best wishes also to Gary Fitzpatrick who has injured himself while on a photography expedition. Be warned everyone – photography is now becom-ing an extreme sport ! Our first excursion this year included an en-tertaining day touring the Bass Coast Hills. We had great fun following David and Lynne Cook ‘off road’ amongst some of the most scenic countryside in the shire. Don’t ask me how, but Di Davy was able to record our meanderings, so we’ll be able to revisit to capture the magic colours and panoramas another time. Lunch at the Kernot Store was a pleasant sur-prise. It seemed like a real oasis after such a long (but not arduous) trek. Yummy baked treats and a welcome coffee soon had us heading off again, re-freshed for the afternoon’s explorations. Thanks David, for a fantastic photography car rally adven-ture. A day at the Woolamai Picnic Races in April, was inspired by our speaker at the February meeting. Neil Murray, a local Phillip Island identity with a professional interest in horse racing and other sport photography, shared his experiences, tips and passion for capturing the action and spirit of the competition. An avid bird photographer as well, Neil held us spell-bound as he shared favourite photos and explained how to set up to achieve desired effects. He recommended we: look for symmetry and harmony to add interest; set cameras onto burst mode shooting, pick a point on which to focus (saddle) and pan as the shutter continues to fire. This way you can get away with a slightly slower shutter speed (1/80 using 200mm lens, ISO 100); be prepared to delete most shots (we sure agreed with that advice after our attempts at the Woolamai Races excursion !); explore evaluative light metering and learn how to adjust the ISO and f-stops to make the most of available light; try to find spots where the background is uncluttered (not finish post) as the better shots are during the fight to win; ex-periment to find the speed effect that you like – degree of blur / streakiness in background; find a position on the rail at the home turn as horses fan out, to ensure a clear shot of the action; use a big zoom and a monopod for surf-ing shots (560mm using a lens extender); appreciate how difficult it is to get a good shot of motorbikes at great speed – try panning tips; and always shoot in RAW !! Check out Neil’s website if you’d like to know more about his interests: http://www.neilmurrayphotos.com

Medical Centre and Golf Club Displays Change-over date for works on display will be Thursday 27th May. Get works to Elizabeth or Pip by Midday, or ring to organise meeting us there to help. Works for the Golf Club need to be quite large, as smaller works will be lost on the large display spaces we have available in the main Dining Room and the Gaming Room. Golf Club management would prefer works on a sporting theme in the Gaming Room. Works for the Medical Centre can be smaller, but not too small. The Medi-cal Centre reserves the right to choose which works are to displayed on their walls in the passages of the Centre. They prefer more ‘traditional’ works neatly presented. They do not have to be framed, but must be finished in a professional manner.

Member’s Book Launch Ibis writer, Heather Tobias, is about to publish her debut book of poetry. Mainly about birds, A Feather in My Hair, is a collection of poems based of the author’s observations of her natural surroundings over many years. In his Foreword, Dr Brian Edwards, (former Literary Studies lecturer at Deakin University) describes the poetry as painterly as well as literary, demonstrating “a sharp interest in birds’ behaviour as a central and important part of the natural environment, as a measure of life in nature.” The book is illustrated and designed by Heather’s cousin, Wayne Rankin, who shares her con-cern for the natural environment. Wayne is known internationally in the field of design and interactive me-dia. Also, in October, Wombat books will launch an anthology The Sound of Silence: Journeys through Miscar-riage, which includes Heather’s short story: Escaping Good Friday.

Treasurers Report G’Day members, My name is Ken Wilkins, your Treasurer. Since I have taken over the Treasurer’s job, we have made some cost cutting changes: the first is that we have changed banks. The Committee felt that, since the Bendigo Bank supports ASPI for our Cup Weekend Exhibition and also supports the Camera Club, we should support them - so we now bank with the Bendigo Bank. We are also changing the way we col-lect the annual membership fees. I will now be sending out a renewal invoice to members in early June. Membership fees are due on the 30th of June each year. The invoice will include all your mem-bership details and I have also introduced a membership number. You now have the choice of paying your annual subscription by cheque with the remittance advice on the invoice; or you can pay by direct deposit into our bank account - either on the Internet or by depositing your fees into our account at any Bendigo Bank using your name and membership number as the reference. Instructions will be on the invoice. Due to the ongoing cost of running our organization, the Committee decided it necessary to increase the membership fee to $25.00. This increase has been kept to the minimum and the fee remains lower than other local artist’s societies.

Membership Report I am also the Membership Secretary. As at 04/05/2011, we have 117 members: 68 visual artists, 45 Camera Club members and 15 Ibis Writers. In addition, the recently formed Textile Art Group cur-rently has 8 members. As some members belong to more than one group, the individual members total more than the ASPI total. ASPI membership is growing!
