Darmstadt - City of Science with Charm and Tradition

    www.fuu.de www.fuu-languages.com

Darmstadt has developed from a former ducal seat into a cityof science and culture. In addition, it enjoys excellent transportconnections to the nearby banking metropolis of Frankfurt andits international airport; it is also close to Wiesbaden, the capitalcity and political centre of the federal state of Hesse. However,Darmstadt has plenty to offer in its own right: since 1997 ithas officially been known as a city of science thanks to theexceptionally high concentration of employment in research anddevelopment.

Over 30 scientific facilities and research companies are locatedin Darmstadt. The city is home to a renowned Technical Univer-sity, two Universities of Applied Sciences and several privatescientific and research institutes. Together, they represent avariety of scientific disciplines, all of which can be debated in theTalik Chalibi-designed darmstadtium science and conferencecentre, which opened its doors in 2007.

The city and its surrounding region are also among the leadingeconomic areas in Germany; in 2010, the European Commis-sion named it one of Europes top ten most innovative regions. With the largest software cluster in Europe, the area is knownas the Silicon Valley of Europe. Alongside information technol-ogy, the chemical industry, mechanical engineering and spacetechnology form the economic focus of the region.

In terms of culture, too, Darmstadt has always led the way in in-novation. Indeed, the city has a long tradition of groundbreakingand revolutionary creativity; an early example is the Mathilden-hhe artists colony. Founded over one hundred years ago, itestablished Darmstadts reputation as a significant and widelyrenowned centre of Art Nouveau.

The city caters for all cultural tastes. With several sights, includ-ing the former ducal residential palace on the Market Square, the orangery, the Rosenhhe park, the hunting lodge and StLudwigs church, as well as a variety of literary, artistic and mu-sical leisure activities, there is sure to be something for every-one. A trip to the State Theatre, the Hessian State Museum or tothe Hessian State Archives is also highly recommended.Home to people from over 140 different countries, Darmstadtenjoys an international flair. An intercultural bureau supports thiscoexistence and cooperation with a wide variety of activities.Darmstadts international potential was recognised early on bythe Council of Europe in Strasbourg, and as early as 1975 thecity was awarded the European prize for its outstanding role inpromoting the concept of European unity. Since 1958, the cityhas maintained 15 town-twinning partnerships and today coop-erates with other several international organisations.

All of these strengths make Darmstadt the ideal location inwhich to learn the German language and culture in excit-ing and inspiring surroundings. Local residents, too, canof course improve their foreign language skills, such asbusiness English, or join one of the many other foreignlanguage courses.
