It’s the home of the new Algoma Residential Community Hospice, known to all as simply ‘ARCH’. It’s located on 4th Line West in the Soo, and for many terminally ill patients from all over Algoma, it’s the next best thing to being at home. It’s a sad fact of life that death lurks in the shadows, waiting to ambush all of us, sometime, somehow. For some, it will come quickly and unexpectedly. For many others, it will involve suffering through a long, protracted terminal illness. The ‘lucky’ ones get to live out their last days in peace and comfort, in comfortable sur- roundings, in their own homes, with their fam- ily close by. Sadly, for many others, that’s just not an option. Many families simply don’t have the resources or skills to provide the necessary care. Even if a high degree of medical care isn’t necessary, many terminally ill patients are forced to remain in an ‘acute care’ environment – usually in a hospital. For them, it means spending their last days in a cheerless, institutional environment and perhaps worse, their family members are usually limited in their ability to visit or stay with them. Opened in 2008, ARCH is a Residential Hospice – a home- like setting that provides specialized care for people living with a terminal illness, during the last weeks of their lives. There are attractiveand comfortable common spaces where fami-lies can relax together: a large family room, asacred place to sit quietly for a while, a chil-dren’s playroom, outdoor patios, a walkwayand treed areas in which to enjoy the out-doors and fresh air.

Routines are flexible and the overall environ-ment is one of quiet and calm. Here, a resi-dent’s family and friends aren’t considered aninterruption or an inconvenience. Familymembers can visit any time of day or night, and even pets are welcome in the resident’sroom! Family members who are comfortablewith providing personal care to their lovedones are encouraged to do so. They can bringfood to cook family meals in the kitchen, andtea and coffee are always available to visitors. There is no set menu or dining routine. sary and birthday parties, a baby showerand even a wedding right here!” beamsHelen. “Our residents and their familiestend to think of us as being one big ex-tended family.”

“On September 22nd, we marked the firstanniversary of our opening with what wethought would be a small Memorial Serv-ice. 186 people – the families of formerresidents - came for it! We all shared anon-denominational candlelight service(held off-site so residents would not bedisturbed), followed by a family get-to-gether. It was truly a joyful occasion!”

ARCH staff and specially-trained volun-teers are available to talk openly andcalmly with residents and their familiesabout their hopes and fears, and themany practical things that need to bedone, to set minds at ease. They also sup-port opportunities for residents to spendtime doing what is important to them, atthis stage of their life.

Professional care is provided by a team ofRegistered Nurses and Personal SupportWorkers, working closely with the familyphysician and a palliative care specialistphysician. Other professionals and volun-teers help out as needed, including socialworkers, pharmacist, massage therapist, music therapist, dietician, occupationaltherapist and clergy of the resident’schoosing – with over 100 volunteersavailable to help meet the resident’sneeds.

“It’s a calling.” Helen tells us. “Many ofour professionals could work elsewherefor more money, but they choose to behere. Our volunteers must pass a thor-ough 35 hour training program, so youknow that they truly want to be here!Contrary to what you might think, this isNOT a ‘sad’ place!” she asserts. “We all gettremendous satisfaction from everythingwe do to make this time count for ourresidents. Still, we’re all human, andwhen a resident does pass on, we all findourselves wiping away tears.”

Helen has absolutely no regrets about hercareer choice. “I personally had retiredfrom the healthcare field, but I came backto help get ARCH built, and stayed on to

administer it. Now, a year into it, I knowthat this is the best job I’ve ever had!”

Although the physical environment is se-cure and ‘private’, ARCH is open to any-one who qualifies. That means anyonewho:

• Holds a valid Ontario Health Card

• Has a life-threatening illness and a lifeexpectancy of less than 3 months

• Requires nursing and personal careservices

• Agrees with the goal of care

• Can not be cared for at home, butdoesn’t necessarily require the ‘acutecare’ of a hospital.

How much does it cost? To the residentand their family, absolutely nothing!About half of ARCH’s funding comesfrom the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care. The other half of its operatingcosts are (hopefully) covered by charita-ble donations. “Our fundraising comesfrom the ‘grass roots’, not from large cor-porations or endowment funds. The St.Joseph Island Lions Club and Cancer So-ciety have been absolute heroes in sup-porting us! The beautiful bird feeders andpicnic tables adorning the grounds weredonated by the Lions.

The other big fundraising comes fromgroups of dedicated supporters – groupslike ‘Stephanie’s Angels’. Named in hon-our of Stephanie (Moore) Tabaczuk, awonderful woman who lost her own bat-tle with brain cancer, ‘Stephanie’s Angels’is a group of men and women who un-selfishly volunteer their time to helpARCH bring dignity, comfort, support, pain management and quality of life toall who need it.

Stephanie’s Angels seem to be everywherein Algoma, including right here on St.Joe! Their specially-designed CancerBracelets and Necklaces are available onthe Island at Northern Credit Union andMoose Sweats in Richards Landing, aswell as at Karen’s Dream in Hilton Beach.

After paying for thematerials used inmaking the jewelry, more than 95% of allfunds raised throughthe sale of these at-tractive, ornamentalkeepsakes goesstraight to supportingARCH. What a won-derful and thoughtfulidea for a Christmas present or keepsake, for someone who’simportant to you! OR, instead of a gift, think about making adonation in someone’s name!

Another challenge facing ARCH is that many people don’teven know about it yet! Those who do, quickly become sup-porters! “We hope to improve our public profile this year.”says Helen. “When we first opened, we hosted an Open Housethat attracted more than 4,000 people. We can’t really do thatnow, because it would be too disruptive to our residents. Wehope to have an information video finished soon, which willalso become a feature on our website,www.algomahospice.org.”

We’re confident that the word WILL spread about ARCH! Ifyou’d like to know more, or would like to get involved eitheras a volunteer or a donor, Helen would be happy to hear fromyou! She can be reached at (705) 942-1556 or email her at: [email protected].

We hope that you and those you love will never have to facesuch a terrible situation. But if (God Forbid!) you do, whenthings look their darkest, ARCH can be a brightly shining beacon of light!

The Wild Turkeys!THESE ‘GOOD OLE BOYS’ from the Soo personify blue-grass and old time country music … all wrapped up with afun, ‘pickin’ and grinnin’, irreverent attitude, delivered withenough energy to power a small city! Their stage presenceand energetic sound come together in a style that’s perhapsbest described as “Swamp Stomp Country“.

Armed with fiddles, mandolin, guitar, bass, harmonica, somekind of strange tin can percussive suitcase contraption andmelodic four part harmonies, the Wild Turkeys have beenwinning over the hearts and ears of audiences everywhere.

This “gang of brothers” first came together as a band in thewinter months of 2006 and quickly formed a stronghold inthe Algoma region. Perpetually on tour, the Turkeys follow abusy schedule performing at festivals, house concerts andsmall venues. Over the past two years, they’ve shared thestage with artists such as the Cowboy Junkies, Prairie Oyster,Creaking Tree String Quartet, and Washboard Hank.

This band blends masterful classical techniques with ayouthful and theatrical approach to old time country. InApril 2007, they released their first original album entitled“Unplucked”, which gained them nominations from theNorthern Ontario Music and Film in Motion Awards(MFM) for “Best Album” and “Best Songwriter”. April 2008saw the successful release of their second, full length album,“Suspendered”. Watch out for these Turkeys, as they are

quickly gaining national and international notoriety!

Then again, they’ve met with a few challenges over the pastfew months. The band’s “Percussionist”, Vaughn Alexander, tells us: “On the way back from our East coast tour, theTurkeys’ touring rig’s transmission conked out. Then, it washit by an unsuspecting stop sign runner two weeks later. Theband was stunned... “plucked” of their only touring coach!”

The five Turkeys had to endure cramming themselves, theirinstruments and their equipment into a sedan, and later, asingle bench half-ton pickup truck, to get to their bookings. In their travels, they had to endure break-downs, some hitchhiking, GPS miss-guidance, rentals, gas prices, and lost hatsalong the way. Still, in spite of their tribulations, The WildTurkeys managed to meet every show commitment, with nocancellations!

Now you can hear, see and enjoy The Wild Turkeys for your-self, right here on St. Joe! They’ll be playing an all-agesChristmas Concert at the Royal Canadian Legion in RichardsLanding on Friday, December 18th! The doors open at 7:30pm, with the show starting at 8 pm. There will be door prizestoo!

Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door. You can getyour tickets at Kent’s Corners, Ambeault’s, or by calling JimJackson at 246-1120. If you can’t make Friday night’s concert, you can still see them, Saturday night at the Elk’s Hall in SaultSte. Marie.

And, if you ever see five guys with musical instruments alljammed into a pickup, who knows - it just might be theTurkeys! We wonder how many of them it would take to fill aVolkswagen ……..

PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: Someone has hijacked my Hotmail and is send-ing out email messages to every person on my address list. How can this happen? What should I do?

ANSWER: How can this happen? Answer honestly: have youused your email address and password to register with Face-book, Twitter, or registered on any web site recently with yourpersonal email address and password? Yes? Then, you haveonly yourself to blame. Handing out your email address andthe associated password is a security breach. When registeringwith any Internet web site, employ a different password. Donot use your current email password. Hackers mine combina-tions of email address and password from unprotected regis-tration databases.

Hotmail email accounts are set up as a free service. Trying tocontact Hotmail support for help is futile and frustrating.Consider that Hotmail account lost for good. Hijackers makeyour loss even more painful by immediately changing yourpassword. This means that you are prevented from loggingback in.

Starting today, always use a separate and very different pass-word when registering on any web site. Do NOT hand outyour email address and associated password.

QUESTION: How do I find out if I have any disk space left onmy computer?

Answer: If you collect digital photos, music, podcasts, andentire DVD videos on your personal computer, this is an ex-tremely important question. Your computer must have somefree space for healthy operation. Allowing the available freespace to dwindle results in slow, slow performance, will cor-rupt files, and might ultimately prevent your computer fromstarting up.

Here’s how to check your computer’s disk space. Go to MyComputer on your desktop or on the Start Menu. Left click onMy Computer. Right click on Local Disk (C:). Left click onProperties. A simple pie chart displays used space in darkcolour and available free space in light colour. My rule-of-thumb is to keep at least a quarter or half of my entire harddisk drive as free space.

If your disk has less than a quarter available, consider buyingan external drive. Move your collected photos, music, pod-casts, and videos to the external drive. Remember to deleteoriginals from the C: drive. Then, revisit My Computer. Rightclick on Local Disk (C:). Left click on Properties. Click onTools; then, go to the Defragmentation section. Click on De-fragment Now. Defragmenting might be a lengthy process, butyou are permitted to interrupt without any harm done. Diskdefragmenting consolidates computer files to improve overallperformance. Once you have deleted files from the Local Disk(C:), always perform this house-keeping step.

IT’S STORY TIME AGAIN and I’m going to tell you allabout how we founded Santa’s village.

As a young man, I knew I had been chosen as Santa Clausand my mission through life would be to spread the spirit ofChristmas throughout the world.

I had finished mystudies and I decided Iwould do what a lot ofstudents do; I wouldtake a year off andtravel the world.

As I put on my back-pack, my rainbow ap-peared in the sky, Iknew it was from OldFather Time and itwould safely guide me.

I travelled to Africa,India, China and

South America. I travelled all over the world guided by therainbow, which wanted me to witness poverty, drought andhunger and so notice that the children of the world were allGod’s children and no one was any different, only the colourof their skin.

As I reached Australia, I felt my journey was over so I lookedup into the sky to see if the rainbow was still there and Iwalked straight into a lamppost and fell to the ground.

“Are you OK?” A voice asked, as I lay on the floor. It was abeautiful young lady and she helped me to my feet. She alsowas a student travelling.

We got on great and I told her I was Santa Claus and that Iwas following my rainbow. I liked her very much and so Iasked her if she would she like to travel with me.

As the weeks passed I fell in love and I knew I wanted tomarry this lady. I built up the courage and asked her if shewould be my wife and become Mrs. Claus. To my delight shesaid yes but wanted to know where we were going to live.Just then, in the sky, my rainbow started to dance and move.We looked up and it swung right around and pointed north. It was sign for us to follow.

We followed my rainbow for many days and nights and fol-lowed it all the way to the North Pole where we found asmall white church made of sugar. Outside stood 12 elves, who bowed when we arrived.

“We have been expecting you,” a voice said; “Old FatherTime has organized everything.” I looked around and behind

me a small talking mouse was greetingme. I said to a very excited future Mrs.Claus “This place is magical. I’m sure Isaw a reindeer in the sky.”

As the door opened, the wedding marchmusic started to play and the head elfproclaimed the wedding of Santa Clausto his bride.

“I proclaim this to be the first weddingin the village! From this day on, the vil-lage will be known as Santa’s village, where we will build a foundation tohelp the children of the world.”

I could tell he was eager. This was thestart of a great friendship, as I knew hewas going to help me build the village.

It was a great day. Old Father Time mar-ried us and my bride looked beautiful,

just like a fairy princess, butafter the wedding we agreed tospend our honeymoon planningthe layout of the village.

We needed workshops, for thetoys and stables for the rein-deers. The list was endless butafter much effort and teamworkSanta’s village is now complete.

Children can now send me let-ters and tell me what they wantfor Christmas or ask me aboutRudolph or any of the otherfamily members living in the vil-lage with me. You can ask meanything you want- Ho Ho Ho!Merry Christmas!
