SOME SAY THAT THIS YEAR’S Community Nightwas the best one ever. Everything just seemed

somehow better. The parade was bigger, the food and

games were fantastic, it was a near-perfect

mid-summer evening (with no bugs!) and nobody

seemed to be in any hurry to leave.

COMMUNITY NIGHT IN RICHARDS LANDING...continued from page 1

Everyone stayed to mingle and have some fun, with all of ithelping the Matthews Memorial Hospital Auxiliary tocontinue helping our hospital and the people for whom itcares.

The evening truly had almost everything … except maybe theFoxes, who were away for the weekend, attending a wedding. But even without us, the Island Clippings was there, thanks togifted photographer Teresa Parker. She and her camera werethere to capture the festivities for those who, like the Foxes, couldn’t make it there in person.

And the old adage about ‘a picture saying a thousand words’is surely true. Teresa’s photos tell a terrific story! Our thanksand congratulations to the Hospital Auxiliary and all the

volunteers who selflessly gave their time and talents, to giveeveryone a great time – and to Teresa for “telling” us about it!

Electric Power is Out? Use YourSolar Lights!

Thanks to Chuck and Shirley Meeks for sharing an email with agreat idea! Although we’ve condensed the contents for space, here’s the idea:

DUE TO A THUNDERSTORM, we lost power for about 5hours one night. We were scrambling around in the darkness, looking for matches, candles, and flashlights. Then we lookedoutside and noticed our Solar Lights shining brightly allaround the patio, stairs & dock. We brought several of theminside, stuck them into plastic drink bottles and they madethe nicest, brightest, safest lighting you could imagine. We putone in the bathroom, one in the kitchen and in the livingroom.

There many types of Solar Lights available. They look niceand do not attract flying bugs like the outdoor lights aroundour doorway. The lights we have fit into 20-oz. water bottlesand also fit into most 2 litre bottles. If you need a weight inthe bottle to keep them from tipping over, put in a few of thecolourful flat marbles they put in aquariums and vases. Youcan also use sand, aquarium gravel, or whatever you haveavailable.

The Solar Lights burn all night when needed and next day wetake them back outside where they recharge and are ready foruse again when needed. They’re the perfect light solution forpower outages.

Did you miss David Francey in Concert?SADLY, WE DID BUT WE HOPE YOU DIDN’T! It sounds like we missed out on afantastic musical experience when the three-time Juno Award winner, accompanied

by Mark Westburg on guitar and Chris Coole on fiddle, played to a small, but highly

appreciative audience on a balmy Saturday night at St. Joseph Township’s fantastic

new outdoor stage.

The results were, to quote one listener, “nothing short of magic.” It quickly became

clear why and how David Francey had won those three Junos (and perhaps soon a

fourth?). He knows how to blend and weave tune and lyrics into something truly

special and memorable and, in so doing, touch your heart.

If, like us, you did miss him on Saturday, it might be a while before you can catch him

again, without getting on an airplane. On leaving Richards Landing, he was booked to

play in Quebec the next night. In August through September, he’ll be in Denmark,

followed by a tour of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Hopefully, David’s travels will bring him back our way. And next time, we’ll be sure to

not miss him again!

Wooden BicycleBy Tanner Ableson

THE ST. JOSEPH ISLAND MUSEUM hasthousands of interesting artifacts, anddepending on who you ask, some may bemore interesting than others. One of myfavourite artifacts is the wooden bicycle thathangs in the barn. Mrs. Joan Wilson donatedthis bicycle in 1964. When I first decided towrite about this bicycle, I checked online tosee if I could find what brand it was. No luck, but upon further investigation, I found that itwas actually built and ridden by Lloyd Bishopin 1922. He was from Hilton Beach, whichwas known as Marksville at the time.

The fact that this bicycle is somewhat of acollector’s item, and my interest in cycling, are primarily what drew me to it. I attemptedto find out more information about thebicycle and its maker, but no one seemed toknow much more about it, despite theirfriendliness and helpfulness. I did recentlylearn from my grandfather, Tom Ableson, that his mother’s brother Milroy Scott owneda wooden bicycle and rode it down the ACRout west, although not exactly sure how farhe went.

I do know though that riding around on awooden bicycle would be much differentfrom riding on the fancy $5,000. carbon fibrebikes they have today. Back in the 1920’s,when you got a flat tire sometimes you had totie a leather strap over the hole to stop theleak, I have been told.

This bicycle is just one of many rare andamazing artifacts we have here at themuseum. Come out and see for yourself!

While we are on the topic of artifacts andcollectibles, on August the 12th, the St. JosephIsland Museum will be bringing backCollector’s day, running from 1 – 4 p.m. Anycollectors wishing to show off their collec-tions at this event, reserve a spot, or findmore information are welcome to call theMuseum at 705 246-2672.
