The tradition was resurrected in the early days of folk and country music, during the Great Depression of the 1930s. And now, with mass media like YouTube making it possible for ‘independent’ singer/songwriters and musicians to bring original songs and tunes to music lovers without a recording contract, it’s an idea whose time has come once again. Think of it as a series of ‘House Concerts.’ Back in November 2011, Heather and Shane Hoffman, our St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters, partnered with Julie Schryer and Pat O’Gorman of Algoma Trad (The Algoma Traditional Music and Dance Group) to host a concert by Cara Luft, an original member of the popular group, the Wailin’ Jennies. The venue was a little different from “the usual” in that the concert was a small, intimate performance, right in the Hoffman home! Ms. Luft was on tour and while passing through our area, stayed overnight with the Hoffmans, repaying their hospi- tality with a casual concert for a group of invited friends. Since then, the Hoffmans have repeated their ‘house concerts’ with other artists. It’s an exciting new trend in music. As ‘big name’ concert ticket prices continually escalate into the stratosphere, emerging internet technology has enabled virtually anyone with a computer to affordably showcase their talents. But even grass roots music must ulti- mately be performed live, in person, if it is to have any staying power, which dictates ‘taking the show on the road.’ With today’s exorbitant costs of travel, the ‘new’ House Concert idea has taken flight with successive travelling performers - singing for their supper, so to speak, and staying with local families while on the road. To a talented songwriter touring on a limited budget, the grass roots ‘house concert’ has tremen- dous appeal, allowing them to bring their music to more people in between bigger booked concerts. And, to a music lover, it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet up-and-coming performers they wouldn’t otherwise meet, and experience great live music that hasn’t yet been picked up by “the music business”. And the price is certainly right! The Township of St. Joseph Events Committee thinks it’s a great idea and they want to expand the opportunity for more Island residents to enjoy. They’re making the Old Town Hall in Richards Landing – a wonderful venue for small concerts – available to artists who are travelling through our area. St. Joe to Host “Just Passing Through”ConcertsHERE’S A REVOLUTIONARY NEW IDEA that we’ve heardabout, for bringing original live music to the Island!

Well actually, this ‘new’ idea harkens back to the early days ofEuropean travelling minstrels. The tradition was resurrectedin the early days of folk andcountry music, during the GreatDepression of the 1930s.

And now, with mass media likeYouTube making it possible for‘independent’ singer/songwritersand musicians to bring originalsongs and tunes to music loverswithout a recording contract, it’san idea whose time has come onceagain. Think of it as a series of‘House Concerts.’

Performers would get ‘bed and fed’ by local residents, alongwith any financial proceeds, in exchange for putting on aconcert to entertain our residents. Traditionally, a token“admission” price is determined to cover expenses, but gener-ally people are free to pay what they think is a fair price.

“We think that this is a great way to connect people with freshnew artists and music.” explains Events Committee ChairJodyWildman. “We learned from speaking with other musi-cians we’ve hosted that there are relatively few places in ourarea where a travelling musician can put on a concert.Wehave a wonderful venue that’s so well situated, right here withthe Old Town Hall.”

The concert schedule will start at 7:30 pm onWednesday,April 24th, with a visit from ‘The Mountains & the Trees’ –actually one extremely talented young man from Halifax whoalso answers to the name of Jon Janes. He plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, harmonica, bells and drums, and oh! Hesings too, of course.

According to his official biography, he is often accompaniedby the Valleys & Seas Orchestra, featuring a collection of hisfriends on a variety of instruments. The live show has grownto become a very intimate thing, involving a mixture of story-telling and songs that engage the audience on a personal leveland leave them with “a warmth in their heart and a smile ontheir face.”

Although much of his public persona is one ofgood natured, witty spoofery, he is still verymuch an accomplished musician. He’ll be stop-ping on St. Joe Island, on his way from Torontoto the West Coast. We’ve sampled some of Jon’smusic and we look forward to seeing ANDhearing more from him on the 24th. If you’dlike to check him out, visithttp://soundcloud.com/themountainsand-thetrees or see some of his clips on YouTube. And definitely plan on coming to his concert atthe Old Town Hall in Richards Landing.

With more concerts planned over the summerand fall, the series won’t be limited to any oneparticular type of music. One visitingperformer might offer folk songs, while thenext is a jazz composer, followed perhaps by aclassical musician and so forth. “What they’llhave in common is that their music lends itselfto a small, up-close-and-personal concert envi-ronment.” smiles Jody.

But it won’t be a completely ‘open door’ policyfor snagging any performer passing by with aguitar in their car. The Events Committee willact as a selection jury, ensuring that ‘just

AMaple Syrup Festival UpdateORGANIZER GLORIA RIDDELL tells us that lastweekend’s turnout for this year’s Maple Syrup Festival at theLegion was quite good, considering the marginal weather.“With Saturday’s snow/sleet, we were very lucky to have 672hungry folks battle the elements and fill up with deliciouspancakes and sausages.” she reports. “Sunday’s weather was alittle better with cold, rain and overcast which brought outanother 789 people. Our total weekend attendance was1461.”

It’s clear that the weather can’t deter people from coming forwhat has become a regular annual outing. “It was great to seeso many people arrange to meet at the Legion where theywere able to eat and socialize with friends they hadn’t seenfor a while.” beams Gloria. “All in all, a great first weekend!”

If you didn’t get there last weekend, don’t fret. They’ll bedoing it again NEXT weekend. In fact, don’t be surprised tosee lots of people whoWERE there last weekend come backfor more!

QUESTION: Dear for the Health of It, I have been readingyour articles over the past few weeks and it has been quite, well, depressing. I feel like there is so much to do, and I amoverwhelmed. I am crying at the drop of a hat, and although Itell myself that I just need to “pull my socks up”, I feel like Iam falling apart. What should I do? Thanks, Mrs. Dee Prest

Hello, Dee, let’s take a look at depression. It is incrediblycommon, and its treatment, unfortunately, is not so simple as“pulling your socks up”.

Depression is thought to be a problem with chemicals in thebrain that are at lower levels than they are supposed to be, orare not working properly. They are thought to include norep-inephrine, serotonin, and possibly dopamine. When thechemicals in the brain are low or not working, they show upas “symptoms” of depression. These hints that something isgoing on can include:

1. Sleep disturbance - sleeping more or less than normal

2. Loss of interest in your usual activities and hobbies, including low sex drive

3. Abnormal guilt about something in your life

4. Lack of energy

5. Poor concentration

6. Increased or decreased appetite

7. Suicidal thinking- this can range from thoughts ofwishing you wouldn’t wake up in the morning, tothoughts of planning your death.

8. Depressed mood

9. Unexplained aches and painsEveryone is welcome for seminars, equipment demos,

The “signs” of depression are the things that other peoplemight see and some examples might include:

1. Looking depressed, flat or deflated

2. Appearing tearful, sad, or anxious

3. Psychomotor agitation or retardation- this means thatyou can appear either slowed down or sped up mentallyand physically

4. Slowed speech, few spontaneous comments

5. Appears irritable, has abnormal thoughts or beliefs

Depression is very common, and 1 in 10 Canadians willsuffer from it during their lifetimes. It is a major cause ofdisability and missed work, affects more women than men,can be more common in families with a history of moodproblems, and is more common in people with major healthproblems. It is not a character flaw or something a persondeserves; rather, it is a disease, with good available treatment.Up to 15% of people with depression could end their ownlife, caused by the distorted thinking from their disease.

Certain drugs, including prescription drugs, street drugs likemarijuana as well as alcohol, can play a role in depression.Life crises, like relationship break-ups, financial woes, anddeath can add stress to a vulnerable person and increase therisks of a major depressive episode. Certain medical condi-tions can mimic or aggravate depression.

Treatment of depression can include daily medications thathelp restore the balance of chemicals in the brain, psychotherapy (talk therapy) to understand thinkingpatterns and life situations, how they affect mood, and waysof dealing with them, exercise (regular moderate exercise hasbeen shown to greatly improve mood in mild to moderatedepression), healthy diet, and socializing.

If depression reaches a crisis point where you are feeling thatyou might hurt yourself or others, or a loved one is introuble, call 911, the Sault Area Hospital Crisis Helpline at(705) 759-3398 or 1-800-721-0077 or present to the nearestemergency department. Do NOT worry that asking someoneif they are depressed or suicidal will cause them to hurtthemselves, it is the only way you can learn if they need helpand will get them one step closer to feeling better. I hopewith this information, that you won’t reach a crisis point, because you will get help before things get that bad. Checkout www.depressionhurts.ca for more information.

So, Mrs. Dee Prest, I hope that this information was helpfuland that you seek help soon to determine what you can donow to get started on feeling better and living life to itsfullest.
