Pastor’s Note

Celebrating Catholic Schools Week!

As a product of both Catholic and public education, I am very grateful for the sacrifices my parents made for me and my two sisters so we could get a great Catholic elemen-

tary education. I graduated from St. Norbert Elementary School in Overbrook in 1984 and Carrick High School in 1988.

This weekend at the 11 am Mass we kick off Catholic Schools Week. There are many wonderful options for schools in our area. St. Bede and Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy offer a quality Catholic education in a safe and loving environment with a 3 and 4 year old pre-school program and Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. We have two great “neighborhood schools” in the Point Breeze and Wilkinsburg Communities. Please call 412.661.9425 at St. Bede or 412.242.3515 at Sister Thea Bowman for more information or for a tour of the school.

This weekend we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time and all three readings focus on discipleship. Last year, Pope Francis declared that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time to be set aside for “Sunday of the Word of God.”

In the first reading from Isaiah, we read how a prophet looks forward to the day when the light of God will shine forth in the darkness. In the second reading from Paul to the Corinthians, we read how Paul urges the Lord’s faith-ful people to strive for unity in what they say and do. In the Gospel of Matthew we read how Jesus calls his disci-ples to assist in his ministry, preaching the gospel and healing the sick. This gospel passage focuses on the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, as he moves from Naz-areth, where he grew up, to the City of Capernaum on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. By God’s grace we too can respond with a complete gift of self and follow him.

Celebrating Catholic Schools Week!

Blessing of Throats In honor of the Feast of St. Blaise, which is on Monday, February 3, we will have the “Blessing of Throats” after each Mass next weekend. All are invited to have their throats blessed. Collaborative Youth Ministry Study Group One of the key goals Pastoral Council has been discussing the last several months is focusing on getting our youth more involved in our parish. I am pleased to announce that we are forming a Collaborative Youth Ministry Study Group with members of our neighboring grouping Sacred Heart/ St. Raphael. If you are interested in learning more about this study group, please contact Melissa Viator at the parish office at 412.661.7222 or [email protected].

Parish Records and Archives Since we are now a new parish, all of the Sacramental Records including: Bap-tisms, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Weddings, Funerals, Mass intentions, bulletins, financial records, and other historical items from the three former parishes of St. Bede, St. Charles Lwanga, and St. James, are now located at the Parish Records and Archives Center in the West End. When inquiring about a sacrament one has received at one of the former parishes, you will need now to call the Archives Office at 412.456.3158 or e-mail at [email protected] Parish Improvements The Holy Rosary Rectory roof has been repaired. New shingles and slates have been installed.

Jake Luffy Masonry continues to repair the sidewalks and steps around the St. Bede Campus.

New office furniture has been delivered at the St. Mary Magdalene Parish Office. Updated internet, cable and phone lines will be installed in the next few weeks at all three rectories and will eventually all be connected to one phone system. We appreciate your patience during this transition. Are You Registered? If you are attending Mass at St. Mary Magdalene on a regular basis and are not officially registered, please call Terri Price at the office at 412.6617222. Every Catholic needs a place to call home and be officially registered at a parish.

If one is asked to be a Godparent for a Baptism or Con-firmation Sponsor, they need to obtain a “Sponsor Let-ter” (Letter of Recommendation) from their Pastor. If one is not a registered parishioner, then we are unable to issue a sponsor letter. Congratulations to Thomas Jamison McCrady Jr. and Catherine Staley McCrady who made their Profes-sion of Faith last weekend! Happy Birthday to our Director of Music Ministries, Jennifer Gorske, who celebrated her birthday this past Monday, January 20! Something to Think About…

Father Taylor’s Reflection

Each Sunday when we come to Mass, we have special scripture readings that enable us to enter the very Word of God. Each day the Lord has a message for us and it may very well be in the biblical read-ings of the day.

Both the reading from Isaiah and the gospel remind us that, while we have lived in darkness, we have seen a great light. The Christmas season told us all about the light of the star that lead us to Bethlehem where we found Jesus the light of the world. We continue to journey with the star as we form new parish family re-lationships. Saint Mary Magdalene parish is a new way to serve and be a part of the many communities nearby. Next week is Catholic Schools Week throughout our diocese. We are blessed to have St. Bede's School and Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy. They both are fine ministries of service and evangelization

Please read the bulletin (January 19) and website for all of the schools’ activities

Letter Writing on January 25 and 26

All are invited to participate in letter writing in the Chapel at St. James after the 4 pm and 10 am Masses; at Mother of Good Counsel after the 9 am Mass; and at St. Bede after all the Masses.

While many act individually in the civic arena, monthly letter writing affords us an opportunity to focus our attention collectively to witness to our Christian values. It just takes a few minutes after worship to put your faith into action.

This month’s letters are to members of Congress relating to US policy in the Middle East. Please read and consider signing the letters, and speaking out on this important issue.

Blood Pressure Readings January 25 and 26

All are invited to have their blood pressure checked in the Chapel at St. James after the 4 pm and 10 am Masses and at Mother of Good Counsel after the 9 am Mass.

Sunday of the Word of God

In his Apostolic Letter published on September 30, 2019, “Aperuit illis”, Pope Francis instituted the Sunday of the Word of God, to occur on the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Pope Fran-cis is inviting Catholics across the world to deepen their appreciation, love and

faithful witness to God and his Word.

“He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” Luke 24:45

This was one of the final acts of the risen Lord before his Ascension. Jesus appeared to the assembled disciples, broke bread with them and opened their minds to the understanding of the sacred Scriptures. To them, amid their fear and bewilderment, he unveiled the meaning of the paschal mystery: that in accordance with the Father’s eternal plan he had to suffer and rise from the dead, in order to bring repentance and the forgiveness of He then promised to send the Holy Spirit, who would give them strength to be witnesses of this saving mystery

The relationship between the Risen Lord, the community of believers and sacred Scripture is essential to our iden-tity as Christians. Without the Lord who opens our minds to them, it is impossible to understand the Scriptures in depth. Yet the contrary is equally true: without the Scrip-tures, the events of the mission of Jesus and of his Church in this world would remain incomprehensible.

If you wish to learn more about scripture by joining a bible study group, please visit the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s website at diopitt.org and search for bible study. There are also resources on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, usccb.org, search for Sunday of the Word of God.
