Pastor’s Note

Merry Little Christmas! This week is the beginning of our new parish, St. Mary Magdalene. I am truly honored to be named the founding pastor and together with Fr. David Taylor we appreciate your

love, support and prayers as we con-tinue learning and growing with each other. This past year and half preparing for this big day has been a lot of work, but well worth it. What a great time for new begin-nings: a new parish, a new year, new goals and objec-tives as we continue celebrating the birth of our Lord. This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany also referred to as “Little Christmas.” Epiphany is a Greek word which means showing forth or manifestation. The primary symbol of Epiphany is light. The readings reflect joy of the birth of Christ. In the First Reading from the Prophet Isaiah, we read how the prophet invites people to look about and see all the na-tions giving praise to God. In the Second Reading to the Ephesians, Paul speaks of the great honor God gave him in proclaiming the Gospel to the gentiles. In the Gos-pel of Matthew, we read how the Magi from the east come to pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews, putting Herod and his officials in a panic. As we begin a new year, 2020 and celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, we pray that God’s light may shine in our hearts and on our world. With all that has gone on this past year with the continued political fighting in Washing-ton D.C. and Harrisburg, shootings, terrorism, natural disasters, and the opioid crisis, let us not focus on the darkness of things but on the light of Christ coming into this world. Thank you to all who sent me Christmas Cards, gifts and goodies. I am honored to be your pastor. Next Saturday, January 11, we welcome Bishop David Zubik at the 4 pm mass to install me as pastor. Please join us in celebrating this new journey. Please note be-cause of the Installation Mass, there will be no 5:30pm Mass next Saturday, January 11, at St. Bede. The Sun-day morning Masses will be as usual.

Merry Little Christmas! Parish Improvements A new motion sensor light was recently installed in the St. Bede bathroom off the sacris-ty. We will continue installing these censor lights in vari-ous bath rooms around our three campuses to save electricity and prevent lights being left on overnight or when the buildings are not in use.

S & N Roofing of Slippery Rock made various roof re-pairs and cleaned out the gutters above the main en-trance of St. James Church. This was one of the main causes of rain water coming into the church near the front vestibule.

S & N is also going to begin work in the next few weeks on repairs to the Holy Rosary Rectory roof. We are still in the process of looking at getting caulking and masonry work repaired around the side windows of St. James Church and eventually we will need to replace the main roof of St. James Church.

We are looking to repair several broken sidewalks around the St. Bede Campus.

We are in the process of updating the electrical panel in the Mother of Good Counsel sacristy and eventually in-stall several outdoor motion sensor lights at the main and side entrance of Mother of Good Counsel Church.

If you are interested in financially helping us complete some of these wish list items, please make your contribu-tions payable to St. Mary Magdalene Parish. All of the bank accounts from the three former parishes are now merged into one. Please also note that we now have one Administrative Center. Please use the mailing address and phone number for all parish business:

Father Taylor’s Reflection

As we continue to celebrate the Christmas season, it is notable that so many of the gospel stories speak of a journey from one place to anoth-er. Mary traveled to visit her cousin, Elizabeth as they were both expect-

ing their sons, Jesus and John the Baptist. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem for the birth of the savior. The holy family had to journey to Egypt to save the life of the newborn Savior. And today, we celebrate an-other journey on the Feast Day of the Epiphany. Each of these journeys is related to the story of salva-tion. They were difficult, but all of them showed a great amount of faith and trust in God's ways. We also start on a new journey in a new year as St Mary Magdalene Parish. Like those who traveled around the birth of Jesus, we move in faith hope and trust believing that the journey is not only worthwhile, but it is also part of the salvation story. We have together made many sacrifices and put in a lot of time to make sure our new parish will succeed. As always the outcome is up to the Lord, for we have come this far by faith. A blessed and peaceful New Year to all.

Giving by Way of Your Required Minimum Distribution If you are 70.5 years of age or older by the end of the year, and have an Individual Retirement Account, not a Roth IRA, that requires a minimum distribution, you may direct all or part of it, up to $100,000), to your Church or another not-for-profit before the end of the calendar year. and not pay taxes on that portion of your RMD. This will allow you to help others, in a tax favored way, even if you can no longer itemize your Federal Tax deduc-tions. To find out more, please talk to your financial advisor.

Online Giving Faith Direct is the online giving provider for our new parish. As we begin a new year and a new parish, we invite you to prayerfully consider if online giv-ing is right for you.

To sign up at Faith Direct, for regular contributions or for one time gift, visit faithdirect.net and use church code PA994

Please note that the parish still says St. Bede. This will change when we receive the necessary paper-work for our new name.

See the homepage of our website: cceepgh.org for online giving information or call Cathy Raffaele at 412.241.1392.

Bearing Gifts The Magi brought gifts to the baby Jesus. What gifts do you bring to the Lord? You might have the gift of patience or understanding and bring this gift in your interactions with others. You might have a talent for bringing new ideas and creative insights into situations at home, work, parish, or your city. You might have a gift for helping people to work together for a great cause or purpose. All these gifts have been given to you by God, to be used for God’s purposes, for God’s greater glory. All of these are glimpses of God’s grace, and like St. Paul, you are called to be a good steward of them, as a sign of Christ’s life within you. You bring your gifts to the Lord by using them well, sharing them generously and responsibly in caring for others and for all of crea-tion. ©J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
