Dear Friend, You hold in your hands a compilation of the ministries at Uniontown Bible Church, and ministry opportunities that are available for our people to participate in. Please understand that God does not need us to do ministry because He is an all-powerful God capable of doing anything that He wants to do. He allows us to do ministry. He gives us the awesome privilege of being used by Him. Jesus didn’t just tell us what ministry was all about, He showed us. He set the example. Ministry is about serving with a humble and grateful heart. Ministry is about giving God the glory He is due. And ministry is about blessings. We don’t serve so we can be blessed—but we are blessed when we serve. As Ministry Team Co-Director one of the things that I am passionate about is connecting people to God and to each other through ministry. Why? Because I know what joy awaits people on that wonderful journey of drawing closer and closer to God, and reaching out to others in His name! Perhaps you are holding this and reading it and saying “I don’t think ministry is a joy or a blessing—I just think it’s hard work, and takes up my precious time.” It is possible that you served in the past in a way that was not the way that God designed and purposed you. It could also be possible that you were trying to do too much all alone. I can say with absolute certainty that God has something wonderful waiting for you to do! There is a joyful journey awaiting you! We have provided this booklet to give you an overview of all the ministry opportunities that we have here at UBC. On August 5, 2007 we will have our Annual Ministry Fair following each service where you will have the opportunity to interact with all of our ministry teams, get to know the people doing the ministry, and ask any questions you may have. On Sunday, August 19

th, we will have our Annual Commitment Sunday. We ask everyone to

commit to serving our Lord for one year in some area, inside or outside of our church walls.

So please take the next several weeks and read through this handout, pray, and be attentive to listening to where God is calling you to serve. In the back of this handout is a sample of the card you will be given to fill out on Commitment Sunday. In a few weeks following Commitment Sunday you will be receiving a follow-up letter or phone call from the ministry team leader for the area where you have volunteered to serve. Serving Christ, Denise Velte Co-Director of Teams and Groups

A Little Love Team Leader: Jay Bubel

Purpose and Description: As many ministries, missions, etc. begin, the still small voice of our

Lord spoke in the ear of His children. So is the beginning of UBC’s Union Bridge Outreach, offering food, and toiletries to those in need with no questions asked on a monthly basis. God laid it on the hearts and whispered a plan in the ears of several of His children. Plans were made and

dates were set and relationships are being built.

The hearts desire for “A Little Love” food pantry is to reach out in love to people in Union Bridge that can use a hand up, not a hand out. We provide food, fresh produce, and toiletries as God provides the 4th Saturday of each month. The Union Bridge United Methodist Church has opened their doors for us, and we welcome their love and support of this ministry. Our focus is

simple: “to be seed planters through helping with a need so that one day,

they might know Jesus personally.”

Peanut Butter Spaghetti Sauce Mac & Cheese Tuna Fish Apple Sauce Noodles Mayonnaise Juice Boxes Juice Bread Ravioli, Spaghettios Canned Fruit Paper Towels Fresh Fruit Canned Vegetables Sm. Laundry Detergent Toothpaste Snack Items Small Dish Soap Soap Shampoo Salmon Beef Stew Ketchup Mustard Toilet Paper Baby Milk Chicken Diapers Baby Food Drink Mixes Crackers Boxed Cereal

We ask that you donate the small sizes of these items. Our focus is to help those we serve through

a tight time, usually the end of the month, with a good meal, and a few additional items to hold

them over until they can provide for themselves. We strive to be good stewards of the donations

we receive to be able to help out as many families as we can. We thank you for your support.

Serving the 4th Saturday of each month. Meet at Bubels Outreach Barn at 11:30 load up and pray. Arrive at the UBUMC by noon to set up. Serve from 1-2:30. Meeting the 1st Monday each month for fellowship and Bible study at the Bednars led by Jay Bubel. Sorting and pick up of donations and organization of the Outreach Barn led by the Liebnos and Byers. If you would like to help, contact any of the team: Jay and Cindy Bubel, Jesse and Diane Byers, Marty and Deb Liebno, and Janet Strine.

Appalachia Harvest Project

Team Leader: Jay Bubel

Purpose & Description: The Bubel’s storage barn receives donations of items on an ongoing basis. Our philosophy of the distribution of items is as follows: the needs of our church

family, our surrounding communities and outreaches, and then they are loaded on a truck

to W.Va., unless the donor designates their desires to any member of the team personally, or labeling their donations.

3eeds: • Appliances, household items, and furniture need to be checked for good working condition. • People willing to come on Monday evenings to organize these donations. • People and trucks to pick up items people want to donate. • People to communicate to our UBC family the ongoing needs for donations. • We need YOU! We need families, ministry groups, small groups, and individuals at UBC

who have the desire to lend a hand with the Appalachia Harvest Project. Come join us, lend a hand, then we’d love to have you go to Appalachia. You’ll have an opportunity to dig in, get to work on a project that will improve the living situation of a family. We also do home visits, help in the churches’ distribution centers—whatever help we can provide, wherever it is needed. We work with Pastor Rose who has the vision that the spiritual warfare that so heavily plagues this area will one day, by the grace of God, no longer exist. They work unceasingly to that end. We help provide the physical need, to enable the pastors and local churches to shepherd their flocks into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the only thing that really matters. The Appalachia and A Little Love Teams meet the 1st Monday of each month at the Bednars for fellowship and time in the Word led by Jay Bubel, and the 3rd Monday for sorting donations and organization led by the Liebnos and Byers. The Appalachia Harvest Project Team—Bubels (410-775-2910), Byers (410-848-0424), Liebnos (410-756-4424) and Janet Strine (410-751-5567) and our church family who faithfully continues to remember this mission with their donations!

Backyard Camps

Team Leader: Steve Hreha

Purpose and Description: To lead children and their families into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by equipping students and adults to reach families in the community by hosting five-day camps for grade school children in strategic locations. Behind-the-Scenes Volunteers. There are countless ways to serve prior to a week of Camp – purchasing supplies, making phone calls, building signs, setting up tents, transporting tables and chairs – you name it, we probably need it and need your help. Host Families. Commitment: Host a 5-day camp in your yard; Host “Family Night” on Friday evening. If you have a backyard large enough to host a camp and a heart big enough to show hospitality to kids and the volunteers serving, then let us know. Host homes help with preparing snacks and providing access to restrooms and water (outside faucet). Camp Counselors/Jr. Counselors. Commitment: 1 week of camp; training and meetings leading up to camp. Counselors lead a select group of campers throughout the week. A great camp counselor listens to campers, loves them like Jesus would, and enthusiastically leads campers to participate in every camp activity. High school and middle school students are desired for this role. Students can earn service hours for school by serving kids in their community! Camp counselors are vital to the success of this ministry and play a key role in connecting with kids who need Jesus. Craft Coordinators. Commitment: 1 week of camp; planning crafts and purchasing supplies prior to camp. It’s a great help having a person who can direct children during a craft time. If you love kids and enjoy craft projects we definitely need your help. You can bring your own ideas to the table or work with others to determine craft activities. Center Leaders. Commitment: 1 week of camp; team meetings prior to camp; prep for table activities. Center Leaders are responsible for helping children move toward life application by engaging campers in guided conversation while they work on a fun, yet meaningful activity. A great Center Leader is well prepared and works hard at getting kids thinking and talking! These leaders realize their job is primarily that of starting conversations rather than simply finishing projects. Camp Directors. Commitment: planning meetings; recruiting, meeting with volunteers prior to camp; overseeing 1 week of camp. In order to provide several camps in various locations we need volunteers to step up and direct a camp in their respective community. Previous experience working at a Backyard Camp would be helpful.

Called to CARE… for orphans

Team Leader: Jennifer Diehl

Vision: By revealing God’s heart for orphans and networking with other area churches, we will (1) promote awareness of the needs of orphans and children in foster care (2) provide resources and educational opportunities for prospective adoptive/foster families, (3) encourage prayer support and (4) missions/outreach opportunities to reach more lives for Christ.

Mission: To promote awareness of God’s heart for the orphan as revealed in scripture, and how we, as the body of Christ, are called to care for them

1. Adoptive / Foster Resource Families: Families who have already adopted or done

foster care, who would like to be available to answer questions for families who are currently going through the process.

2. Support/Encouragement: Not everyone who adopts is childless. Some families who

already have children and are looking to add to their family through adoption or by doing foster care may need assistance when they have to travel, attend meetings, doctors appointments, etc. We can help care for these families by providing meals, helping with babysitting, sending written prayers or notes of encouragement.

3. Web Page: Individual interested in keeping Called to Care info updated on the web site.

Info will be provided.

4. Bulletin Board: Someone with a creative flair to help maintain the bulletin board in an attractive manner – info will be provided. Commitment: Update board once a month

5. Workshop Support Team: Commitment: Workshops will be offered twice a year.

Caring Team

Team Leader: Chuck Bednar

2 Corinthians 8:13-15 (3IV) 13

Our desire is not that others might be relieved while

you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14

At the present time your

plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you

need. Then there will be equality, 15

as it is written: “He who gathered much did not

have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little”.

Mission: Provide temporary financial assistance to those who are struggling. We are not certified

credit/financial counselors but have a heart and desire to serve God’s people. We are here only to assist through difficult times. The advice we give is not meant to replace long term financial planning. As those

in the church who have been blessed financially contribute generously, we are able to meet the needs of those who are currently struggling. The mission statement of the Caring Team is to show God’s love by providing for their needs and to enable individuals to become wise stewards of God’s money so they can

move forward and too can bless others in need.

Responsibilities:

1. Contact individuals to determine their needs.

a. When we are informed of a need, we take the information, contact those with the need, and get as much information as possible to access a course of action.

2. Provide information on other available resources and counseling and help make contacts if needed.

a. There are many resources available. In some cases, we do not and cannot be the only source of assistance. That does not mean we send them elsewhere and are done with it, it just means some needs are beyond our capabilities. We are blessed to have former and current employees of the Social Services at our church that can provide a wealth of information on different types of assistance available.

3. Assist with financial help where needed.

a. God has blessed us with the means and the desire to help when and where we can. b. There are different limitations and requirements for those who are members of UBC and those

who are attendees or who do not go to our church at all to receive short-term financial assistance. We had to make the distinction between members and attendees and the level of financial help we can give. The Caring Team brochure on the board in the church lobby explains why.

4. If a situation arises where a person/family will need long-term assistance, we will help to create a

basic working budget that is to help them through the rough times and meet with them monthly to

hold them accountable to that budget.

a. We show people how to set up a simple budget of their income/expenses as a way of tracking and controlling their spending. The budgets we set up are very basic and are more common sense then anything but, most people have no idea how much they are spending until shown.

b. We try to meet with those we have helped with a budget to make sure they are following it. i. If they are receiving financial help from us, they must maintain their budget to continue to

receive help. ii. In many cases, we only help set up a budget with someone who wants to get control of their

spending. They are not receiving any financial assistance from us. In those cases, we meet to assist and encourage but it is up to them to follow it.

5. Provide updates to Oversight Leaders and maintain a database of all assistance to ensure we also

are being good stewards of the money God has provided.

Happy Helpers for the Homeless

Team Leader: Chuck & Kathleen Bednar

Mission:

1) To work with other groups in helping the people of Baltimore to meet the most critical of needs for survival: food, water, and clothing.

2) To be the face and voice of Jesus by showing compassion to others and treating those with the love and respect expected from us for all individuals regardless of their circumstances.

We work alongside others. This is not a group created by or made up solely of members of Uniontown. A

10-year old girl with a big heart and a lot of determination started this ministry. Certain individuals

volunteer every week. Other groups such as ours volunteer once a month. Each group is responsible for

bringing a certain type of food. All of the food and donated items are taken directly to the people, where

they are, outside on the street, regardless of the weather.

When:

The 4th Sunday (not necessarily the last) of the month. Typically 1-5 p.m.

Roles:

1) We need caring people who want to go and serve others by handing out food or other special

items. 2) We need individuals to stop, listen, and talk with those served. Be able to give a handshake, a

hug, an ear, or a shoulder.

While meeting the physical needs of people we never want to forget that those needs and our

solutions are temporary. They will get hungry again. They will get thirsty again. One aspect of

what we do is trying to meet their spiritual needs as well.

3) We need other individuals to listen to God’s call of passing on His Word. a) We want to pass out Bibles, tracts, devotionals.

b) We want to offer to talk about it.

i) We want to do more than hand it to them and walk away. They may not be able to read a Bible on their own. They also hear many different types of sermons at missions and shelters with many differing approaches and it can cause confusion. We never claim to know everything, and no one expects it, but it seems so few people stop to ask what they think or if they have questions. A short discussion can have tremendous rewards.

4) Donations: No time commitment, just bring them to Outreach Barn and mark them for Happy Helpers. Donations are essential to our mission. a) Donations can fall into several categories.

i) Bibles – No explanation needed ii) Toiletries—Deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, hand cream, and chap stick all help to

make people more comfortable and feel better about themselves iii) Juice Boxes—The vitamins and minerals in those little 10 oz. juice boxes may very well

be the only ones most of the people get to supplement their inconsistent diets (this is especially hard on kids). Sold in packs of ten the ones with the higher pure juice contents are preferred.

iv) Occasionally we will post and ask for specific items for different events. In August, we may collect school supplies for the upcoming year. As the weather gets colder, we will be looking for socks, gloves, hats, and coats. Also in December, we may collect new gift items for Christmas.

Team Leader: Steve Hreha, Steve Barron Purpose & Description: This multi-age Sunday morning ministry creates an interactive learning

environment for grade school children (1st – 5th). Designed with the family in mind, this worship/learning hour opens the door for parents to get in on the action! Learning begins the moment the first child arrives and selects from a number of discovery centers. Students also

participate in larger group worship and age-appropriate Bible study and life application (small groups). Families continue the learning process throughout the week by taking advantage of

resources provided each child and /or parents or guardians. 1. Team Members. Commitment: Sept—May; weekly service at 10:00 or 11:30am; regular

team meetings; quarterly training meetings. If you would join a Kid’s Church Team we have several teams to choose from:

• 11:30am PreK/K

• 11:30am Elementary Each team is comprised of volunteers who give priority to Kid’s Church as their primary way of serving kids and their families. Team members use their gifts and abilities in a variety of ways (see below) without being expected to “do it all.” Team up and discover how fun and easy it can be to serve in Kid’s Church!

2. Parents & Family Members. Commitment: monthly

Mary’s House

Team Leaders: Tim & Jodi Sell Purpose & Description: To provide temporary housing for teens and young women facing crisis pregnancies. Our goal is to provide a safe place for these women to have their babies, learn basic

skills to raise them, to develop some goals and methods to live a successful life, and most importantly, to develop a personal walk with Jesus.

1. Friends—Because our girls have no other place to go, typically they do not come to us with many solid relationships in their lives. They crave people to spend time with, call and chat with when they are feeling lonely, or just a familiar face to hang-out with on Sunday mornings.

2. Drivers—Often, our girls do not yet have their license. We need people willing to run them to appointments, interviews, or to get out of the house for a break.

3. Babysitters—During non-day care times, our girls occasionally need people willing to watch their children. Because they are living on very limited budgets, paying for child care is not usually an option.

4. Accountability Partners—We all need these! Our girls need people willing to become a

part of their lives. They need people willing to spend time getting to know them, committing to praying for them, and holding them accountable to live according to goals that they establish for themselves.

5. Counselors—We see this as a desperate need! We would love for God to provide us with an individual counselor for each girl that steps through these doors. We would like to see the girls have weekly or bi-weekly sessions, and to be able to call in times of crisis.

6. Committee Members—We are looking for others with a passion for teen and young moms

to serve on our Mary’s House committee. We meet once a month, the first Friday, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 or 8:30 p.m. We meet to pray, eat dinner together, discuss future plans, and look at how we can better our program for each individual girl. Currently, our team is made up of four members from local Catholic churches as well as four members from UBC.

Men’s Ministry

Team Leader: Bill Harrington

Purpose & Description: Something powerful happens when men come together in common focus around the purpose and work of Jesus Christ. Through distinctly masculine special events,

men’s discipleship and man-to-man discussions, masks and walls can be lowered and honest fellowship and brotherhood begin. The potential for meaningful friendships with other men and

spiritual growth are perhaps the most needed and appreciated aspect of the UBC Men’s Ministry. Our vision is to call and guide men to deeper intimacy with God, genuine accountability with other brothers in Christ, purity of heart, servant leadership, honoring women, mentoring of the next generation, commitment to church leadership, the mission of the church, and unashamed witness to the Lord Jesus Christ. We need your help to be effective in the lives of UBC men.

How you can be helpful:

1. Men’s Small Group Leaders

4. Special Events Help

Commitment—As Needed/Event Father/Son Event; Men’s Winter Summit; Father/Daughter Dance; Men’s Retreat; Men’s Service Projects

7. Leadership Team

Commitment—1 Year The following four gifts keep a leadership team working well. They bring balance to one another. It’s possible, though, to have the proper gift mix but still get nowhere. Each man must bring with him not only a gift but also a deep willingness to be a team player. Contact us if you have any of the following gifts and a willingness to be a team player.

Leadership. Contact us if you have the abilities to develop a vision and to get others involved in bringing that vision to reality. Administration. A ministry generates numerous administrative tasks. Contact us if you like administration. Service. Contact us if you are someone who relishes doing small, behind-the-scenes things that make a ministry work. Mercy. Contact us if you are someone who can care for men; someone who will be a kind and gentle example to leaders and a shepherd to other leaders.
