Jefferson High School Counseling Department Scheduling Procedures

Class Changes The Counseling Department will make class changes based on the following reasons: obvious scheduling errors, summer coursework, inappropriate placement, incomplete prerequisites, or administrative directive.

11

Page 13: “To and Through” College and Career Readiness 2019-2020 ...€¦ · Rigorous UC/CSU “a-g” Plan 9 t h Grade 10 t h Grade 11 t h Grade 12 t h Grade 1. English 9E CP 2. Health/Elective

Student/Parent initiated class changes must be completed during the first three weeks of the semester. After the first three weeks of the semester, if a student/parent has a concern about a class/teacher, the counselor or administrator will recommend the following procedure:

1. At the first sign of difficulty, the student will contact the teacher. This will make the teacher aware of the student’s concerns or frustrations and will facilitate getting additional help from the teacher. 2. If the student feels he/she has tried the suggestions of the teacher and continues to struggle, a parent conference should be scheduled. Appointments can be scheduled directly with the teacher by phone or email for a parent/teacher/ student conference. Counselor/parent/teacher/student conferences can also be scheduled by contacting the student’s counselor.

3. If both student and teacher have tried to improve the student’s progress in the class, the parent can appeal for administrative action with the Vice Principal of Guidance. The Vice Principal of Guidance will then meet with the parent, student, teacher, and counselor to determine if there is anything else that can be done to resolve the conflict in class.

4. If the Vice Principal of Guidance determines that a class change is appropriate, the student will be allowed to transfer to a different class.

This process is designed with the intent of placing responsibility with the student. We hope that the parent and teacher conference will improve communication and create a more positive learning environment for all students. Advanced Placement Commitment All students who choose to enroll in an AP course must meet with the AP teacher to fully understand the requirements of the course and to obtain the required summer work. Students in AP classes are expected to remain in the classes for the entire year. Additionally students are strongly encouraged to take the AP exam in May. In the rare incidence that a student needs to drop an AP class, the student must receive administration approval.
