A Stitch In TimeOn this site for over 300 years has stood one of

Oxfordshire’s great country homes.

Built by Willoughby Lacey in the early 1700’s Eynsham

Manor was a typical Georgian house. In 1778

he sold the estate to Robert Langford. On Langford’s

death in 1785 ownership passed to James

Duberley. Duberley remained at the hall until 1799

when the Reverend John Robinson moved in. In

1805 he sold the estate to Sir Thomas Parker. Sir

Thomas’s father purchased Eynsham Hall to serve

as the Dower house for Shirburn Castle.

On the death of Sir Thomas’s mother the estate was

sold to Sir Thomas Bazley MP. 1866 saw the

arrival of the present freeholder’s great grandfather,

James Mason. After his death in 1903, his son,

James Francis Mason and his wife Lady Evelyn took

over the hall and in1904 the Georgian house

was demolished. Sir Ernest George was appointed as

the architect and supervised the construction

to his design of the present day Jacobean style

mansion completed in 1908.

With the onset of WW1 the house was used to

assist in the war effort. Eynsham Hall has also

been used by Barclays Bank, the Air Ministry and as a

maternity hospital. For 35 years it was a

district police training centre and in 1981 the hall

became one of the first conference and training

centres in the country.

Since 2005 there has been significant investment

in the Hall and the grounds. Car parking areas were

removed from the forecourt which detracted from

the splendour of this great Grade II listed mansion.

With a ‘gravel style’ surface, the forecourt is very

much as it would have been in 1908. Substantial work

to the grounds and gardens make this an idyllic setting

for whatever the occasion.
